DISCIPLINE-BASED VOCABULARY AND CONCEPTS IN THE SPARK STORY
Analog
Term commonly used in photography to mean “not
digital.” Includes photography developed on film,
plates and other traditional media.
Anonymous
Without any name acknowledged.
Appropriation
The act of taking something for one’s own use,
typically without the owner’s permission.
Eugene Atget (1857-1927)
A French photographer known for his photographs
documenting the architecture and street scenes of
Paris.
Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004)
Considered to be the father of photojournalism, he
used 35 mm cameras to capture candid photographs
of street life. Bresson helped found the cooperative
picture agency Magnum Photos in 1947.
Collage
A form of art in which various materials such as
photographs and pieces of paper or fabric are
arranged in a composition.
Contax camera
A camera manufactured originally between 1932 and
1936, noted for its unique, technical innovation,
allowing for a higher maximum shutter speed.
Walker Evans (1903-1975)
American photographer known for his work for the
Farm Security Administration documenting the
effects of the Great Depression.
Farm Security Administration (FSA)
Created as part of President Roosevelt’s New Deal,
the FSA was an effort to combat poverty in rural
American during the Great Depression. It brought
struggling farmers together to work on large
government-owned farms using modern techniques.
An affiliated photography program was created to

document the challenges of rural poverty between
1935 and 1944.
Robert Frank (born 1924)
A Swiss-born photographer, Frank traveled the U.S.
on a Guggenheim grant to photograph all aspects of
daily life. The resulting book “The Americans”
offered a rare glimpse into American subcultures.
Frank later expanded into film and video
experimenting with manipulating photographs.
Google Search
A web search engine owned by Google Inc. Its main
use is to hunt for text and images in publicly
accessible documents on the web. It has several
other features such as maps, language translation,
images, and weather forecasts.
Google Street View
A technology featured in Google Maps and Google
Earth that provides panoramic views from various
positions along many streets around the world.
Street View images appear when the “pegman” icon
is dropped onto a location on the map. The images
are taken by a fleet of specially designed cars with
nine directional cameras for 360 degree views.
Great Depression (1929-1939)
A severe worldwide economic depression in the
decade preceding World War II. Marked in
American by a sudden drop in stock prices, followed
by loss in personal income and business profit
causing unemployment, homelessness, and
migration across the country.
Dorothea Lange (1895-1965)
American documentary photographer and
photojournalist, best known for her Depression-era
work for the Farm Security Administration.
Leica
A German optics company that produces Leica
cameras, first introduced at the 1925 Leipzig Spring
Fair.

New Deal
A series of economic programs enacted by the U.S.
government between 1933 and 1936 in response to
the Great Depression. The programs focused on the
“3 Rs” Relief for the unemployed; Recovery of the
economy; Reform of financial systems to prevent a
repeat depression.
Panorama
Any wide-angle view or representation of physical
space in painting, drawing, photography, film, or
video.
Romantic period
An artistic, literary and intellectual movement that
began toward the end of the 18th century. A reaction
against the aristocratic social and political norms and
against the scientific rationalization of nature. In part
it elevated the value of raw emotion and a close
connection to nature.
Street Photography
A type of photography that features subjects in
candid situations within public spaces. It often
concentrates on a single human moment, caught at a

everyday occurrences.
Surveillance
The monitoring of behavior for the purpose of
influencing, managing, directing, or protecting.
Works Progress Administration (WPA)
An agency established as part of the New Deal
which employed people to carry out public works
projects such as construction of new roads and
public buildings. Artists, musicians, and writers
were paid to create murals, posters, plays, and other
works for the government’s Federal Art Project.
Voyeurism
The compulsion to seek excitement by secretly
looking at unsuspecting subjects.
