Memorable Quotes:
Here, you will list quotes that catch your attention – quotes that help shape a character, are important to a
character’s development in the novel, or that you feel have an impact on the novel, itself. The quotes that you select
DO NOT have to be by the same character, but all of the quotes should have some significance to the novel. An
example has been done for you.
Quote
“Her mother becomes something like
the weather.”

Significance to the novel (why is it important?)
Although Sophie loves her mom, she’s explaining that when
her mom becomes angry, her behavior seems to change
rather quickly, a lot like how weather can change quickly.

Internal/External Conflicts
Directions: Sophie experiences conflict throughout the entire story, in different ways. Think about the
conflicts, or things that stand in the character’s way to complete his/her goal. Next, complete the T-chart
below to demonstrate your understanding of the various conflicts taking place in the novel. For the final
example, choose another conflict that occurs in the novel. Cite page numbers (text evidence) in your
explanation that helped you to understand the conflict.
Conflict
Explanation of Conflict
Sophie vs. herself
(What does Sophie struggle with, within HERSELF? It
could be confusion about something, or an internal
struggle she is having about what to do, right vs. wrong,
etc.)
Sophie vs. Her mother
(What conflicts do she and her mother encounter? It
could relate to a disagreement over certain beliefs that
each of them has.)
Sophie vs. Nature
(Are there forces outside of Sophie’s control that she
battles with? How does this become a CONFLICT or
struggle for her to accomplish her goal?)
Other conflict:
(What other conflicts or struggles did you notice in the
story? Explain how that conflict affects the character(s)
and/or the story itself.
