What
• Declared that colonists
could not settle west of the
Appalachians b/c it cost too
much to protect colonists
from Indians
Effect:
• Colonists were angry they
could not move into the
Ohio River Valley
• Govt was angry colonists did
not want to pay taxes for
protection
Sugar Act of 1764
What
• This law placed a tax on
sugar, molasses, and
other products shipped
to the colonies
• Called for strict
punishment of smugglers
Effect:
• Colonist James Otis
decries “Taxation without
representation is
tryanny!”
Quartering Act of 1765
What:
• Quartering Act required
colonies to house the
soldiers and provide them
with supplies
– Over 10,000 soldiers
needed placement
during/after the F&I War
Effect:
• Colonists felt invaded and
that govt overstepped their
privacy and ownership
Stamp Act of 1765
What:
• Law required all legal and
commercial documents to
have an official stamp
showing taxes had been
paid
Effect:
• Colonists had to pay extra
for everything on paper
• Eventually repealed in
1766
Declaratory Act of 1766
What:
• This law states that
Parliament has
supreme authority to
govern the colonies
Effect:
• Beginning of a tug of
war between
Parliament and the
colonies over who has
control of the colonies
Townshend Acts of 1767
What:
• Law passed by Charles
Townshend, the King’s
finance minister
• Suspended New York’s
assembly until they agree
to house soldiers
• Places imports taxes on
goods brought in the
colonies such as glass,
paper, paint, lead and tea
Effect:
• Angry Colonists
The Boston Massacre
What:
• Fall of 1768, 1,000 British
soldiers arrive in Boston
• Fighting begins, led by
Crispus Attucks and the
Sons of Liberty
• Attucks and four laborers
are killed
Effect:
• The incident became a
tool for anti-British
propaganda
Tea Act of 1773
What:
• Gave the British East
India Company control
over the American tea
trade
Effect:
• Tea, which was very
popular, could only be
bought from them and
of course would be
taxed
The Boston Tea Party
What:
• December 6, 1773
• Sons of Liberty sneak
onto British ships and
destroy the tea supplies
by dumping them into
the Boston Bay to protest
the Tea Acts
Effect:
• Brit. Govt starts to crack
down on colonists
Intolerable Acts of 1774
What:
• Series of harsh laws
meant to punish the
Mass. colonies and
serve as a warning to
others
