Harewood Infant School September 12th 2014 This week at Harewood Purple Class have been very busy this week and they have continued to settle in well and explore their classroom and outdoor area. The children have learned to retell the story of ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’ using words and actions and have sequenced pictures and drawn maps to tell the story. They have drawn and painted their own self-portraits and have all been thinking about the names and features of 2 and 3D shapes. Blue Class have also been getting really good at telling the story of Oliver's Vegetables this week and have been learning about some of the vegetables in the story; there is now a splendid Oliver's Vegetables display in the classroom. All of the children have been concentrating on their self- portraits and have looked closely at the details of their faces. They also voted for their favourite name for the Blue Class Jigsaw piece. The name will be revealed on Monday! In Turquoise Class the children have been using actions to help them to learn the story Oliver's Vegetables. They have decided on a name for their Jigsaw soft toy and used watercolour pencils to paint their self portraits. They have also used poster paint to create pictures of a selection of fruit and vegetables. In PE the children learned about different ways of travelling around the hall. In Green Class the children did brilliantly in their first PE lesson of the year! They had lots of fun moving around the hall in different ways and practising their basic skills. They all worked really hard and are looking forward to their next session. The children have also been doing self-portraits - they looked carefully at their reflection and then drew exactly what they saw. Everybody has enjoyed learning to retell the story of Oliver's Vegetables and they talked about the types of fruit and vegetables that they enjoy. Yellow Class Year 1 children have also been learning the story of 'Oliver's Vegetables' this week. They are going to retell it with actions for the Reception children next week. Everyone took off their socks and shoes and went into the hall to have a dance to music on Monday. The Reception children were all brilliant at organising themselves. Hopefully, next week they will be going into the hall wearing their P.E. kit for the first time so please make sure it is in school as soon as possible. Everyone has been showing off their maths skills in counting, writing numbers and shape recognition and the Year 1 children have made lists of all the vegetables they know. Finally, in preparation for starting PSHE work (called Jigsaw) all the children suggested names for the Yellow Class Jigsaw character. They will vote for their favourite in a ballot next week! Red Class have been inspired by the artist Jason Mecier who creates pieces of art using sweets. They created their own gingerbread houses made from sweets as in the story Hansel and Gretel! We have been practising copying and pasting pictures from the internet into a Word document. We have also been learning how to write riddles and thinking about different ways of travelling in PE. In Orange Class the children have been making their own Jason Mecier style artwork. They used sweets and biscuits to make the gingerbread house from Hansel and Gretel. The children have also been starting to write their own riddles about their favourite character. Archie said "You need to make sure you give the biggest clue at the end. If you do it at the start then everyone will know who it is.” In P.E. Orange class have been experimenting with different ways of rolling. Poppy, Kaitlin and Isabelle were able to show the whole class how to do a perfect Teddy Bear Roll! This week Pink Class has been learning all about the artist Jason Mecier. They discovered that he creates collages out of sweets, food and junk materials. They have had a go at creating their own 'Mecier inspired' collages of the gingerbread cottage using sweets, biscuits and cereals. The finished art work looks fantastic! They have also been learning about what we need to do to stay healthy and have focused especially on ways to relax and wind down. They have finished their character descriptions of Hansel, Gretel and the witch and are now thinking about how to write a riddle for these characters. In P.E. they have explored different ways of travelling and have begun to try and build a sequence. Friday mornings From now on we will be happy to welcome parents and friends into school for ten minutes from 8.45am until 8.55am to look at the children’s work and see what they have been doing during the week. It is a lovely opportunity to celebrate your child’s achievements with them. Please help us to settle the children quickly for the start of the day by leaving promptly when the bell rings and by leaving buggies and prams outside. If a little one is asleep in their buggy Mrs Howard is always more than happy to look after them while you come into the classroom!!! Lunchtime Next week the Reception children will be attending school from 8.45am until 1pm and will eat their lunch during that time. The Government now fund a free school lunch for all infant age children and at Harewood we provide an appetising, freshly prepared meal for the children to enjoy. Each morning, at register time, we ask the children what they would like for lunch and our catering team prepare the meals that they have requested. We suggest that it is a good idea to talk through the daily menu with your child to enable them to choose something they will like. Our newsletter always includes the menu options for the following week. If your child has any special requirements please talk to your child’s class teacher and we will endeavour to meet their needs. Share a book Don’t forget to help your child to choose a book from the book box when you come into school on Friday mornings. The books in the box have been chosen because the interest level is appropriate for your child’s year group. Some will be great for your child to read to you, others you may enjoy reading together, and some are tricky reads that your child will enjoy listening to – perhaps at bedtime. There are stories, information books and poetry collections in the box. Some are new books and some are books that we have been using in school for a while and we always add to the books in the box throughout the year. We hope that you will enjoy choosing and sharing the books with your child – I know that the children have some lovely books at home but it is never possible to have too many or to read too often!
