About the Riant Theatre
Mission
The Riant Theatre’s mission is to provide a nurturing environment to develop new plays and
outstanding artists. To fulfill this mission The Strawberry One-Act Festival was created by
Artistic Director, Van Dirk Fisher 18 years ago, as a venue to discover playwrights and give
them a development deal and produce full-length plays and take them to the next level. Some
plays presented in the festival have gone on to tour the country or have been made into short
films. In addition, several plays are chosen for publication in our annual anthology: The Best
Plays From The Strawberry One-Act Festival.
“It’s like The American Idol for Playwrights,” says the New York Daily News. And what better
place than New York City, the Mecca of American Theatre, where the playwright’s dream is to
have a play on Broadway? Well, the Riant wants to be a catalyst to set things in motion.
The Strawberry One-Act Festival is a play competition in which the audience and the theatre's judges cast their votes to
select the best play of the season. Twice a year, hundreds of plays from across the country are submitted for the
competition, of which 40 are chosen to compete. Plays move from the 1st round to the semi-finals and then the finals. The
playwright of the winning play receives a grant and the opportunity to have a full-length play developed by the Riant Theatre.
At the Awards Ceremony and Performance six (6) nominees are acknowledged in each category and awards are presented
for Best Play, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress.
The Strawberry Festival is a wonderful opportunity for the audience and the
industry alike to see some of the best talent in the nation. Every performance
features four dynamic one-act plays. Audiences always comment that this is
one of the best theatrical events around. There's always a lot of buzz
surrounding each performance as artists converge and network on future
projects. Several of the playwrights whose plays are featured in the festival
have written for the literary world as well as television and film. "We are very
fortunate to be able to fulfill our mission, which is to discover talent and
showcase new plays," says Mr. Fisher. "We are very proud of this
accomplishment, but the work doesn't stop there. Competition aside, everyone's a winner in the festival, because several
actors, directors and playwrights are chosen to work on future projects at the Riant."
In addition, this festival is dedicated to:
1. promoting New York City, its businesses, neighborhoods and
people;
2. revitalizing efforts of downtown Manhattan and other areas
throughout the city;
3. strengthening arts and education within New York City;
4. highlighting New York City as the premiere location for the
development and production of new plays; and
5. celebrating the diversity and multi-cultures that New York City has to offer.
Another Highlight: The winter festival will include The Launch Party, Monday, July 26, 2010 from 7pm –
10pm, in which sponsors can gain visibility for their company and products.
