The Falcon Football Coaches Handbook “If you can live without coaching... You should NOT BE ONE” 1 © Coach Tim Klingbeil Coaching Philosophy 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Master the fundamentals. Always be prepared. Never stop working. Be assignment sound. Place players in the best possible situation for success. 6. Run the ball and STOP the Run. 2 Playing Time it is about… a Falcon Thing. Lets say its me and you are playing the same position, and I’m the older guy and you’ve got talent. I’m going to teach you what I know to try and beat me out. I want you to take my position, because if you take it, we will be a better team. If not, when I leave, you’ll be smart enough to get it done. That’s what “A Falcon Thing” means. No matter what, I want the best players on the field. 3 4 Loyalty “When we are debating an issue, loyalty means giving me your honest opinion, whether you think Ill like it or not. Disagreement, at this stage, stimulates us. But once a decision has been made, the debate. From that point on, loyalty means executing the decision as if it were your own. - Colin Powell 5 Falcon Pyramid Competitive Fundamental Football Pride Preparation Respect Intensity Discipline Effort Repetition of fundamental skills Fundamentals Blocking, Tackling & Teamwork 6 Winning Comes Second It is our job as coaches to ensure that the players we coach are better people when they leave us, from when they arrived. We want to create winners on the field, but more importantly, winners in the game of life. 20 years from now our players are not going to remember the scores of their games. They are not going to remember the offensive or defensive schemes we employed. What they are going to remember is the journey and the time spent together. They will look up to us. Carry your self in a professional manner at all times while with your players. Avoid swearing and inappropriate conversations. Basically if you would not do it in front of your grandmother than do not do it in front of the players. Negative Chemicals: Do not chew tobacco in front of the players. Also do not discuss alcohol in front of the players. Be a role model. Conduct with Officials: Do not torment officials. Do not complain about calls, once its done its done. Failure scapegoats are as old as humanity do not let them be a part of us Conduct with Opponents: Show respect for our opponents at all times. Show it during, before and after the game. No taunting, jarring or fighting with our opponents. Social Media: We live in an era where there is social media. Everyone is one cell phone picture, facebook post or tweet away from downfall. Let it be understood that anything ones post on facebook or tweets on twitter is the same as standing up in a room and yelling it. If you are not wiling to say it there DO NOT say it on line. It still travels and perhaps even more so online. Disagreements: As coaches we are not always going to agree on everything. If a disagreement takes place it must not take place in front of the players. They must not see division on our coaching staff. Dress: Coaches are to where our coaching shirt and khakis during all games. When cold weather comes we team jackets that will be issued. We want all coaches to look professional on the sideline during games. Personal Conduct: Do nothing to bring shame or embarrassment to Falcon Football. For the Coaches “There are little eyes upon you and they’re watching night and day, and there little ears that quickly take every word you say. There are little hands all eager to do anything you do. And little boys who dreaming of the day he’ll be like you. You are the little fellow’s idol you are the wisest of the wise. In his little mind about you, no suspicions ever arise. He believes in you devoutly, holds all that you say and do; He will say and do in your way when he’s grownup like you. There’s a wide-eyed little fellow who believes you are always right, and his ears are always open, and he watches day and night. You are setting an example every day in all you do, for the little boy whose waiting to grow up to be just like you.” Ego Check 1. Do you have a relationship with your team, or do they have one with you? 2. After a loss do you look for the scapegoat? 3. Are you willing to try new things and work with others to help you in areas where you might not be as strong? 4. Do you listen to suggestions from others? 5. Are others afraid to bring anything to your attention because you have freaked out in the past? 6. Do you belittle/humiliate/embarrass others? 7. Are you a man of your word? 8. Will you sit at a table & socialize with an opposing coach? 9. Do you give others the credit after victories? 10. Do you say "I" or "we" when talking about your team? 11. If you were forced to choose … it is an unfair choice but if you had to … A win or turning around the life of one player on your team … which one do you choose? • In the end, is it REALLY about the kids? • Or is it about you? Your program? Your job …?
