HOW TO SWIVL: USING
A GEN 2 SWIVL ROBOT
Q: Why use a SWIVL?
■ Remember that a SWIVL is not a camera; it is a camera holder.
■ Unless the subject of the video stands perfectly still, another person must follow the
subject with the camera to prevent the subject from walking in and out of the video.
That is why it is referred to as a robot; it replaces the work another human being
would be doing.
■ The base of the SWIVL contains an infrared sensor that tracks the person wearing
the marker. The marker also contains a microphone.
■ Since the person being video taped is wearing the marker around his/her neck, the
quality of the audio is improved as most background noise is not picked up.
A: A SWIVL improves both the visual and the audio
components of a video recording of a person who is
presenting, speaking, or teaching
Step 1: Become familiar with the SWIVL
and its accessories
NOTE: The marker is stored in its charging dock
Step 2: Charge the SWIVL and Marker
Depending on your SWIVL, the power jack
may be located on the side of the SWIVL –
not on the back.
When plugged in, the LED light shows the
status of the charge:
Flashing red: the base is charging
Flashing green: the marker is charging
Solid greed: both are charged
Step 3: Test your mobile device (I-pad
or I-phone) for fit; change shims if
necessary
■ On the top of the SWIVL, you will see a horizontal slot where your I-pad or I-phone will
sit Your mobile device should fit securely in this holder.
■ If your mobile device does not fit, you will need to change the shim. The SWIVL
comes with a total of 4 shims to accommodate width of most I-pads and I-phones.
■ Watch the following video to see how:
NOTE: I-phone 7 does not work with the Generation 2 SWIVL Robot
Step 4: Before connecting your device, become
familiar with the buttons and indicators on the
top of the SWIVL. Also note where you will plug
in the audio cable on the back.
NOTE: The USB and Micro USB ports are used for charging the SWIVL while recording.
Step 5: To begin connecting devices,
start with the marker. Power on the
SWIVL first and then the marker.
■ When you first turn on the
SWIVL, it may move a little up
and down and side to side
until it comes to rest in a
balanced position.
■ At first, you will see two red
lights on the top panel.
■ Remove the marker from its
dock and turn on the marker.
The LED light on the marker
and the marker status light on
the SWIVL should now be
green.
Step 6: Now pair the SWIVL with your
mobile device (I-pad or I-phone)
■ Press and hold the Sync button until the LED light flashes red.
■ Now on your mobile device, navigate to your Bluetooth settings and pair with the
SWIVL. (See the next slide.)
Step 6 Continued: Pair the base with
your mobile device
■ Go to Settings;
■ Find Bluetooth; Slide to Turn On;
■ Wait a moment; A list of Bluetooth
enabled devices will show up;
■ Tap on SWIVL to pair your mobile
device to the base.
■ The SYNC indicator on the base
will now be green. You will now
have two green lights.
Step 7: On your mobile device, install
the SWIVL app.
■ As soon as you pair the base with your mobile device, you will be prompted to open
and install the SWIVL app. Follow the directions and install the SWIVL app which
also gives you access to storage on the SWIVL Cloud.
■ The SWIVL app lets you record video using your mobile device to upload and share
on SWIVL cloud. The SWIVL app has been called “SWIVL Capture” and “SWIVL
Practice” in the past.
■ Advantages of having your video on the SWIVL cloud are the following:
■ Presentations such as Power Point and notes can be synced with your video to
create a multimedia experience.
■ You can easily clip the video
■ You can download the video and save it to a computer. You can also create a link to
your video to share through e-mail etc.
Step 8: Insert your Mobile Device into
the SWIVL and connect the audio cable.
■ You are now
ready to go!
Using the SWIVL app
■ On your SWIVL app on your mobile device, you will be in the Library.
■ Look for the hamburger menu (three stacked horizontal lines) in the upper left
corner and tap on it to open the menu shown here on the right where you will find
Capture.
Recording your video
■ To record, first tap the Capture area on your SWIVL app. This will bring up a
circle; either tap the circle on the SWIVL app on your device or tap the red
record button on the side of the marker. A quick tap on the record button is
all that is needed.
■ To stop recording, tap the red record button on the side of the marker again.
■ Maximum recording time is shown on the top right corner of the Capture
app.
■ Stay between 5 and 20 feet of the base while recording for best results.
■ When finished recording, tap the hamburger on the SWIVL app to return to
the library.
Using the Marker
The arrow buttons on the front of
the marker are perfect for
navigating slides in a multimedia
presentation.
The check mark button has two
options depending on the settings:
It can pause tracking or it can
rotate the SWIVL for a complete
360 degree turn.

Where to place the SWIVL?
■ The SWIVL base follows the marker using an infrared signal. The marker and the
base should have a direct line of sight with a range of 3 to 30 feet. Staying within a
range of 5 to 20 feet is best.
You can change your settings if desired
■ The settings menu on the
SWIVL app allows you to make
many changes such as the
quality of the video (SD or HD);
HD requires more memory or
space. Auto-upload means you
will automatically upload your
videos to the SWIVL cloud, or
you can choose to save your
videos to your device.
