The Philosophy Café, Aberdeenshire / Café Philosophique, Aberdeenshire. Spring Programme2016 The Philosophy Café, Aberdeenshire is now officially called Café Philosophique, Aberdeenshire – the name change better matches the similarly titled events which are run in Aberdeen city and reflects a close working relationship with the University of Aberdeen. However, all else remains the same. Established more than four years ago and working in partnership with Aberdeenshire Libraries and The University of Aberdeen, the priority of Café Philosophique, Aberdeenshire is to bring academic speakers to communities across the shire. The Philosophy Café successfully attracted funding from Foundation Scotland in 2015 and will provide an enhanced programme in 2016, which will reach new communities and test new venues. The spring / summer programme will include first time visits to Huntly and Kemnay as well as the Long Gallery of Duff House. The spring programme opens on Wednesday 10th February in the Acorn Centre in Inverurie with a usual start time of 7pm for a 7.15pm. The £3 entrance fee includes refreshments. Dr Ewen Millar will lead discussion on "The Ethics of Extreme Body Modification - Should the NHS fund amputation of healthy limbs?" The second spring café will be held in the Acorn Centre, Inverurie on Wednesday 9 th March. The topic is Emotion vs. logic: human decision making, the speaker, Dr Margaret Jackson. Dr Dan Wall 2pm The cafes are open to anyone in the community, no philosophy training is required, real life experience is desired. Discussion take place in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere designed to encourage debate, exploration of ideas and the promotion of critical thinking about society’s challenges. The Café draws on speakers from the University of Aberdeen and covers a range of topics, some which lend themselves to debate and others e.g. archaeology which share information on research and take the shape of a talk with questions and answers.
