The Philosophy Café, Aberdeenshire / Café Philosophique, Aberdeenshire.
Spring Programme2016
The Philosophy Café, Aberdeenshire is now officially called Café Philosophique,
Aberdeenshire – the name change better matches the similarly titled events which are
run in Aberdeen city and reflects a close working relationship with the University of
Aberdeen.
However, all else remains the same. Established more than four years ago and working
in partnership with Aberdeenshire Libraries and The University of Aberdeen, the priority
of Café Philosophique, Aberdeenshire is to bring academic speakers to communities
across the shire.
The Philosophy Café successfully attracted funding from Foundation Scotland in 2015
and will provide an enhanced programme in 2016, which will reach new communities and
test new venues. The spring / summer programme will include first time visits to Huntly
and Kemnay as well as the Long Gallery of Duff House.
The spring programme opens on Wednesday 10th February in the Acorn Centre in
Inverurie with a usual start time of 7pm for a 7.15pm. The £3 entrance fee includes
refreshments.

"The Ethics of Extreme Body Modification - Should the NHS fund amputation of healthy
limbs?"
The second spring café will be held in the Acorn Centre, Inverurie on Wednesday 9 th

The cafes are open to anyone in the community, no philosophy training is required, real
life experience is desired. Discussion take place in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere
designed to encourage debate, exploration of ideas and the promotion of critical thinking
about society’s challenges.
The Café draws on speakers from the University of Aberdeen and covers a range of
topics, some which lend themselves to debate and others e.g. archaeology which share
information on research and take the shape of a talk with questions and answers.
