2016 Instructions A reappearance in the playoffs in 2015 was nice, but the rebuilding didn’t take and there is still work to be done here. We will see… Active Roster Pitchers: Casilla,Santiago Gallardo,Yovani Giles,Ken Hammel, Jason Happ, J.A. Platoon / Injury Do not remove Harper, Cano, or Gonzalez once they are in the game. Rarely remove Lagares (probably only to pinch hit for him in the bottom of the 9th and losing and the Pinch Hitter has a better chance). If Lefty Starter comes out and we are behind, Reyes and Sandoval can hit for Mercer and Uribe. If we are ahead, leave the starters as they are better on D. If Righty Starter comes out for a lefty, get Mercer and Uribe in the game. Get Dietrich out of the game in this situation (Hernandez to PH and stay or Upton on D). Player Usage Limitations: Get Susac and Upton out of blow out losses. Dietrich can play LF if we are blown out to save ABs for Upton. Upton stays if we are way ahead. If Upton is over usage, I will limit him as I play games. Hernandez has 202 AB but only starts against leftys. Susac has only 133 AB but also only starts v Leftys. Position by Position: C: Pena plays against the Rightys, Susac against the Leftys. Susac is a little better defensively, but you can double switch with them if you need to if the pitcher is throws from the opposite side as the starter did. 1B: Gonzalez plays every day. Alonso is the injury backup. 2B: Cano starts against all but two leftys that crush lefties. Never comes out when he is in the game, and will finish the games he doesn’t start when the lefty crusher comes out. Hernandez and Dietrich in order are the injury replacement guys. SS: Reyes starts versus the rightys, Mercer versus the leftys. Mercer is much better defensively, but they both hit much better one way. If we are behind and your pitcher has changed sides, might need to make the switch, if ahead, we will want to see Mercer in the game. 3B: Sandoval starts versus the Rightys, Uribe against the Leftys. Uribe is more balanced and better defensively so err on having him in if you are unclear. OF: Lagares, and Harper play all the time, but we use three guys in left field to make up for it. Other Upton starts against most Rightys, with Dietrich against Rightys if we Must Bat Left. Hernandez starts against the Leftys. Pitcher hitting / Pinch hitting Pitchers sacrifice, even with two strikes. PH versus lefty: Tablesetters are Alonso (L), Mercer, Upton, Hernandez for the RBIs and power, Uribe for beef if Hernandez is not available. PH versus righty: Alonso to lead off, Dietrich for lefty power, then Uribe. It is a weakness of this team. Bunters: Miller is the only A bunter. He will pitch first in the series so he will be available to bunt without injury risk. Baserunning Typical stealing decisions, 65% Who to H&R and when: we don’t use this much, poor fundamentals on this squad. Score at 60%, or 40% with two outs Send trailers to second aggressively, to third conservatively Send low percentage trailer when tying or go ahead run is coming to the plate at 70% or less. PR(s): most of the speed is in the game. Reyes if he isn’t in there. Defense When we are ahead late, the platoons should be converted to the better defense as discussed above. Uribe, Mercer, and Susac. Clearly Dietrich is out of the game at this point. Intentional Walks The mega-boppers when men on and 1B open, or empty bases late and tied. Otherwise, I don’t use it much except to get to a bad hitting pitcher or a weak clutch hitter. Instructions for the Bottom of the 7th Inning: Alcohol sales are ended after the bottom of the 7th, so when you hear Take Me Out To The Ballgame, it’s last call, order what you need to get you through the game. There is not an ACE on the staff, but all five of these cards are solid. Game plan is to get them through 6 innings either tied or ahead. That’s the plan. Casilla, Socolovich, and Morin can help get a key out in the 5 th or 6th. Starters come out in dots if it is still a game, but get us four innings at least if they get blown out early. If they become tired in the 4th or after, they come out then. If not in dots, will try to pitch 6 innings unless they need STOPPER help from Casilla, Socolovich, or Morin to get to the Big 3. Starters only pitch in the 7th with a comfortable lead or way behind and scheduled to hit in the bottom of the 7th. Miller Try to get 6 IP out of him. If we are in the game, the big 3 finish it up. If we aren’t he can stay longer. See above for my thoughts on pitchers this year. Volquez See Miller for the Plan. He is a bit better v Leftys, and his BB to Rightys may hurt him. Hammel See Miller for the Plan. A very good card except for HRs to Rightys. If the bases are empty when he hits them, he is going to win games. If they are all 3 run shots, it will be ugly. Gallardo See Miller for the Plan. He will walk a few too many, but you will have to get the RBIs on your own card. Happ Bob will manage him once, I get the other 9. This guy would be good if his father had taught him to throw with the right (correct) hand. Alas, he’s a lefty. Card is good enough, we will see if the lefty crushers crush him. Specific innings limitations: None. Additional comments: All these guys come out in dots if it is still a game. If we’re blown out early, the starter can go. BULLPEN: Don’t fall behind this team (you probably won’t). If we lead after 6 IP, use two of Giles, Ziegler, and Jansen for the last 9 outs. Casilla and Morin in blowouts, but hopefully they will mostly get a batter here and there to get us to the big 3. Jansen Killer Closer, balanced. You can homer off his card, but 15x more likely to K. Will 52 IP get plenty of 6 out saves. Ziegler Killer Closer #2. Especially a R killer, better than Jansen to get three rightys out for 68 IP a save. Lots of GBA on his card make up for few K’s. Giles Strong Set Up. Balanced and no beef. And 70 innings. 70 IP Casilla Stopper vs Right. Left side of his card blew out this year, but he has a role to get 58 IP by one or two rightys (or a string) midway through the game. He should NOT face a lefty with men on unless we are already blown out. Socolovich Screwball Righty, Stopper vs Left. Gets us through the tough leftys, can face the 30 IP righty in a string of leftys. Mostly pitches to get out of a jam and turn it over to the big 3. Morin Mid/Set. A little better vs the lefty, can go 2 innings if starter is blown out early.. 35 IP Additional Starters mop up if we are blown out. Giles, Ziegler, and Jansen are better than the comments: starters so let them bring it home if we are ahead.
