UNIT 6 PRACTICAL SPORT

UNIT 6
PRACTICAL SPORT
What is this unit all about?
This unit will give you the opportunity to showcase some of the
techniques and skills you have in both a team and individual sport, as
well as demonstrating your tactical ability as well.
In addition to this you will need to know about the rules, regulations
and scoring systems of selected sports and have an understanding of
the roles and responsibilities of the officials connected to them.
Finally, you will develop the ability to be able to analyse the
performance of an individual or team, making recommendations as to
how their performance could be improved
Making sense of the Pass
Criteria!
The key verbs you need to know to
achieve the pass criteria are
Describe – ‘paint a picture in words’
Demonstrate – ‘show what you can do’
Produce – ‘make or create’
Pass 1……
Demonstrate use of practical skills, techniques and
tactics for one team and one individual sport
•
•
•
•
•
Technique – movement or action required for the sport
Skill – application of the technique under pressure
Tactics – strategy or plan to be successful
Team sport – i.e. football, cricket, hockey, netball
Individual sport – i.e. golf, squash, archery, judo
Pass 1…..what it means for you!
In a word PRACTISE!
You need to practise and then be able to demonstrate a range of
techniques and skills required in the sports that you choose +
demonstrate that you can apply a range of tactics that are relevant
as well.
Have a look at the attached document – it should give you a good idea
of the sort of things you need to brush up on!!
Example 1 - Wrexham LEA.doc
You may need a bit of help!
If football is not your scene then see if any of these clicks help you
to develop your techniques. We’ve enrolled the help of some tops stars
to help!!

Pass 1…..showing what your
made of!
Eventually, you will be assessed by your teacher or
coach (in a game or simulated game situation) using a
form similar to the one attached.
Observation form 1 - Wrexham LEA.doc
Why not get one of your mates you observe you (in a
range of different settings) to see if you are coming
up to scratch!
They can use this form to record
their views on (or could do it verbally if
they prefer)
Activity 1 - Wrexham LEA.doc
P1 – a bit of fun!!!
Why not organise a quick skill skool like
they do on SKY? It may not be the most
suitable way to show your skills….but it’s
a bit of fun for everyone!!
http://www.skysports.com/video/0,20285,12602_4106871,00.html
….a bit more quality!
If you want to move onto M1 & D1 you will have
to focus on your tactics and first describe ,
then justify and finally identify areas for
improvement. The attached example will help
you here….so why not have a look
Example 2 - Wrexham LEA.doc
P1 – time to perform!
This is the assessment activity so it’s over to
you!
Assessment Activity 1 - Wrexham LEA.doc
Ok, moving on to P2
P2 is all about rules, regulations and scoring, so it’s more about
brain activity than physical activity! Anyway, read on…
describe the rules, regulations and scoring
systems for one team and one individual
sport
•
•
•
Rules – laws laid down by the sports National
Governing Body
Regulations – no. of players, type of
playing surface etc.
Scoring system – how a goal is scored or
what is needed to win a game or match
The nuts ‘n’ bolts of P2!
There are literally 100’s of rules & regulations for 100’s
of sports. You are not expected to know them all, but
have a look at the following activity and investigate a
sport you have never looked at before.
Activity 2 - Wrexham LEA.doc
This one is probably more up your
street!
Activity 3 - Wrexham LEA.doc
P2 ….see how you do!
Ok, now you have had the opportunity to look at a
few sports you should feel confident in tackling the
next assessment activity.
If you’re not then check out a bit of track cycling!
Example 3 - Wrexham LEA.doc
Assessment Activity 2 - Wrexham LEA.doc
Men in black….or in other words –
P3
They certainly get some stick, but without them the games
generally wouldn’t take place. Yes, you’ve guessed it, were talking
about officials!
As a quick introduction see if you can name the following:
Graham Poll
Dickie Bird
Allain Rolland
P3 – what it’s actually about
Describe the main roles and responsibilities of
officials in one team and one individual sport
Roles such as
Control of players,
use of technology,
signals etc.
Referee, umpire, judge,
scorer, starter etc.
Responsibilities such as
It’s a lousy job!
It’s tough out there…..the officials have a
lot on their plate. Have a go at the next 2
activities – it will give you a greater
understanding of their roles & responsibilities
Activity 4 - Wrexham LEA.doc
Activity 5 - Wrexham LEA.doc
P3……..are you a potential referee?
This assessment activity may not test you out on the pitch (or court), but
it will certainly see whether you have a good understanding of the roles &
responsibilities of officials in a team sport & individual sport of your
choice.
Anyway, it’s good preparation for when you actually get out there for real!
Assessment Activity 3 - Wrexham LEA.doc
P4……performance is the key!
produce, with teacher support, an observation checklist
that could be used to review the sports performance of
an individual or a team
Produce – make or create
Observation checklist – means of recording performance
Review – look back on
Sports performance – scoring, defending, height, distance, time etc.
In brief……..
Right, listen in. Before attempting P4 we need to
have a close look at P5 & P6 as well (as they are
all linked).
The checklist you produce needs to be suitable to:
Use to record how an individual and team perform during a game/match
Identify their strengths & weaknesses
Assist you in describing their strengths & weaknesses and
help you to identify ways in which they can improve (by
making recommendations)
So, what should you include?
Well, the first thing you need to make sure you take into account is that you
are relating your checklist to the sports you are looking at. Aspects of
performance you could look at can include:
o
scoring and conceding,
o
distance covered during the game
o
metres made
o
passes or interceptions made
o
discipline during the match etc.
Why not have a look at the score centre on Sky Sports – they produce loads of facts & figures
for a range of sports. It’s not quite what you need to be producing – but it might give you a few
Ideas!
http://live.skysports.com/ScoreCentre/live.html
Anything else?
……………afraid so!
Remember – you need to be looking at strengths & weaknesses
So look at such things as….
Demonstration of skill
Use of tactics
Respect for officials
Communication
Demonstration of technique
Application of rules
Teamwork
Preparation
Cast your eye over this…
Whatever checklist you’ve put together, have a look at
these 2 clips and see if it’s any good!

What could a checklist look like?
That’s entirely up to you as long as it does the job! The
examples may give you an idea of the type of comments
your checklist will need to allow for….
Example 4 - Wrexham LEA.doc
Example 5 - Wrexham LEA.doc
Still Unsure??
You may not have noticed, but we have been looking at P5, P6,
M4 & D2 as well! When it comes to identifying strengths &
weaknesses and making recommendations for improvements you
need to be focusing on areas such as:
• Individual skills
• Teamwork
• Use of technology etc.
The final hurdle…..
Ok, you should now be in a position to complete the
final assessment activity in this unit……so have a look
at the following link & have go!

Chill out time
Well done – that’s this unit finished!
Why not have a final look at a bit of action….and what’s
better than some of the great performances from
the Beijing Olympics!
Enjoy!!
