The presenter in this video explains that the current university
systems gives priority to research rather than teaching where
academics are ranked based on research outputs. Academics are
more focused on research and devote less time in teaching or
improving pedagogy. He argues that the need for universities
since its establishment was to educate/teach undergraduates
hence need for a newer type of university design based on the
following goals
Designing a University

Reimagining Learning


there is just one goal which is clearly defined “To
educate undergraduates – open the young minds to the
world”.
No departments
No boundaries or hierarchies
No faculty ranks and every academics has same
workload
No lectures – just teaching and all academics are
referred to as Tutors
No lecture hall – only circular designed rooms with
max capacity of 21 students.
All students have to same courses in their first year.
From second year, - move to specialization topic and
work on real world experiences with final evaluation
done through project presentation
Take course in blocks, one after the other rather than
in parallel
Video 2
The presenter in this video explains the digital divide: there are
people who know how to use technology to reimagine learning
and there are some who simply digitize traditional learning
practices. He also discusses some challenges that require us to
reimagine the learning practices in the 21st century.
Challenge #1: we tend to treat all learners the same despite
their unique needs and challenges

#2: we keep the schedule constant and allow learning to vary.
#3: performance date comes too late to be of any use for the
learner.
Reimaging learning by use of technology will help overcome
these challenges which will allow one to

Leverage student interest and experiences
Adjust the pace
Adjust the institutional approach
Provide real time feedback analogous to the GPS
which will show learners where they are in a particular
course.
Technology creates creators, enables mass customization via
learning analytics and radically improves access.

The cofounder of Coursera, explains the rising cost of
education which increased by 559% in last 25 years and why
the online revolution – education for everyone. She and her
cofounder introduced Coursera to bring the best courses from
Standford University for everyone to access. This allowed
students from all over the world to experience the best courses
to which Standford University even provides certificates for
completion. These courses are completely free. Coursera, now
offers courses from most of the major universities in America
such as, Standford, Havard, Rice to name a few.
Coursera is now platform that provides not only free courses,
but also a more personalized learning environment where
students are engaged fully with real time feedback. These are
all automated. Incorporation of artificial intelligence allows
individualized learning experience with targeted learner
feedback. Mastery is easily achieved with technology since the
platform host videos and feedback mechanism that can be
accessed over and over again at the learners’ leisure.

2. Micro-credentialing – association with overseas partners
and industries. Small certificates and job specific trainings
such as those offered by PacTAFE of USP.

embarked on this initiative for example – SCIMS Industry
Experience Project – where BNC and BSE students join
the real IT industry in Fiji and work on a real life software
project during their fourth year of this programme.
4. Personalized Adaptive Learning – USP still needs to take
this on board, however we have SMS and Moodle email
notification that offers small fraction of this service.
5. Curricular Optimization – the PGCTT programme
embraces this.
6. OERs – most course coordinators have begun
incorporating this into their courses after either doing
PGCTT course or attending OER workshops
7. Shared services – USP student webmail is currently
powered by Google Apps. This reduces hardware and
personnel requirement of ITS department.
8. Articulation Agreements – work in progress for USP
9. Flipped Classrooms – most courses in USP are now being
offered fully online or in blended mode. The videos help
save lecture time and more face to face time is devoted
with students during tutorials. Students in Fiji still need to
embrace this fully.
10. One-Stop Student services – a work in progress for USP.
