We hope you can pass by, chat with us and find out more about our plans for the summer. What is Sustainability? ''Sustainability is not exclusively or even primarily an environmental issue... It is fundamentally about how we choose to live our lives, with an awareness that everything we do has consequences for the seven billion of us here today as well as for the billions more who will follow, for centuries to come'' Helen Clark, Administrator of the UN Development Program (UNDP). Please spread the word about it as it is meant to inform the greater Vanier Community of our progress. It will be too early to garden per say, but we can discuss ideas and project our dreams! Light food will be From the beginning, Sustainable Development (now most often referred to as Sustainability) is very clearly linked to the environment and global environmental issues, as well as economic growth and social welfare. served. Gardening at Vanier! This year again, Vanier gardeners (staff, teachers, students...) will be rolling their sleeves to enhance Vanier’s biodiversity and improve its sustainability. We are all volunteers who enjoy playing with dirt and harvesting the products of our labour throughout the summer and fall. We also like to get involved with the gardens for other reasons: Sustainability Major at Vanier College Efficient educational tool – teaching by example Gardening skills that can be transferred elsewhere – knowledge spreads like weeds! Gardening brings the community together Healthy activity, allows reconnection with the earth and a good stress relief And, brings countless environmental benefits for water, soils, air quality, pollinators, beauty! etc. If you are a teacher and would like a gardening session with your students, we can potentially arrange for that, especially if you teach a summer intensive or inter-session course in June-July. Stepping back in time: Vanier gardens’ inauguration - May 2014: http://www.vaniercollege.qc.ca/newsroom/2014/05/communitygarden-to-sprout-at-vanier-college/ What does the Sustainability Major consist of? This College Wide Major is designed for students of any program to explore a wide spectrum of environmental, economic and social issues faced by the planet, locally or globally. While studying in their respective programs, students get exposed to issues of sustainability through a variety of related courses, events and experiences. To complete the Sustainability Major students must take six courses among those that qualify for the major. These courses are listed on our webpage and are available in a wide variety of fields including English, French, Humanities, Science and Social Science. Students must also attend a minimum of three academic events with sustainability content. Finally, they need to complete a total of 30 hours of volunteer work, averaging 10 hours per semester, in local College or Community projects related to sustainability. Once enrolled, students receive weekly newsletters providing relevant information and announcing upcoming events and volunteer opportunities. How to inform students? If you are a teacher presently giving a course with a sustainability content, please inform your students that they can enroll in the Major at any time, by contacting me, as long as they still have a few semesters left to complete the requirements. I might also be able to visit your class, depending on my schedule. If your course is not listed on the website and you think it may quality, please let me know. Vanier College pool (821 Sainte-Croix, Saint-Laurent, H4L-3X9) on Friday May 22nd 2015 from 13:00 to 15:00. The swim-a-thon will be divided into two groups: solo swimmers, if you are up to the challenge, will be swimming from 13:00 to 14:00 and team swimmers (teams of minimum 4 and maximum 8) will be swimming from 14:00 to 15:00. In June, Jailson will visit the Institute of Chemistry Education at the University of Cologne, Germany, to explore the Institute’s research in innovative methods for teaching science. The Institute is a leading European Centre that is devoted to research in science pedagogy, and the University has over 15,000 students in its teacher-training programs. The goal of this collaboration is to exchange expertise in including both technology and creativity in the curriculum. This partnership between Vanier College and the Institute of Chemistry Education was proposed by Professor Christiane Reiners, who is the head of that Institute. She attended the workshop Using creativity to promote deep understanding of chemistry concepts, which was presented by Jailson at the 23rd IUPAC International Conference on Chemistry Education in Toronto in July 2014. The workshop’s structure was inspired by the instructional methods that he has been developing at Vanier College since 2009 to foster learning using creativity. In this pioneering project, students’ learning is enhanced by having them create visual artworks that convey core scientific concepts. This approach results in greater engagement and more individualized learning than traditional techniques. Jailson’s research on creativity will be shared with Professsor Reiners’ research group, who will in turn share their expertise in training teachers in innovative pedagogy, including the use of technology. Benefits will result for both institutions. Professor Reiners’ research group also investigates how the curriculum for teacher development can be improved using authentic learning practices. Other research interests in her group include cooperative curriculum development of university researchers and practicing teachers, as well as developing innovative teaching and learning methods that can be used in restructuring lab-work activities. Learning about these techniques will be an asset to Vanier College’s science program by offering new opportunities for professional development to science teachers. We wish Jailson well in this exciting exchange with the University of Cologne. Judy Macdonald, International Education Language School Danish/German Exchange 2015 Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to visit http://stem.vaniercollege.qc.ca, create an account and rate the various proposals based on five criteria: originality of the idea, feasibility of the plan, usefulness to students, coolness factor, and artistic appeal. Isabelle Rivest, département de français Teaching Tip: Mindfulness Teaching Mindfulness is the act of being aware of your surroundings and your thoughts on purpose. In this high-tech world, teachers and students are exposed to an incredible amount of sensory input every day. By making an effort to periodically focus Image courtesy of graur razvan ionut / our attention inward, we Freedigitalphotos.net can reduce the amount of stress and anxiety that our fast paced environment tends to produce. Contemplative Pedagogy Vanderbilt University’s Centre for Teaching calls the act of mindfulness incorporated into higher education Contemplative Pedagogy. Some of our main goals as teachers are to increase students’ critical thinking and learning skills, and studies have shown that incorporating focused thought and meditative practices into the classroom do just that. Some of us may be less comfortable introducing strict meditation into our classrooms, so below are some quick mindful strategies that can be more smoothly integrated. For Individual Students Kristin L. Roush of Faculty Focus makes some recommendations that can encourage mindfulness thinking in your students, which results in more classroom engagement and student focus. Have students write their name and date on an in-class assignment with their non-dominant hand Have students identify, either verbally or in writing, what typically distracts them during class Have students take a few breaths consciously, focusing all of their thoughts on the process While all of these may seem like simple inconsequential actions, encouraging your students to contemplate the above activities will focus their attention, make them more ready to learn, and even reduce stress or anxiety before an exam. For Groups of Students Before students break into groups to engage in the active learning activities you have designed, ask them to assess the classroom and group environment. By noticing the placement of their group within the class, and the use of body language and classroom furniture within the group, they may become more aware of what helps or hinders effective group work and conversation. 100th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide On Monday, April 27, an information display on the Armenian Genocide will be presented in Jake’s Mall by Vanier students, Ermine Paronyan and Harutyun Mardanyan, with the support of the VCSA. Practice what you Teach! By modelling the mindfulness practices in which you encourage your students to engage, you can also reap the benefits of increased focus and attention. Try a mindfulness strategy while walking to class, waiting for students to arrive, during the break, or even while erasing the whiteboard. You may find that the stress and anxiety that you face as a teacher with regard to deadlines, assessments, and preparation slowly start to drop or be more manageable. For more information on encouraging student thinking and learning, contact us at the PDO! This fall, the theme of the universal complementary course, Sustainability in Action, is “The Politics of Engagement.” With two major political events taking place during the fall semester—the Canadian federal election and the Paris UN Climate Change Conference—students will not only learn about how our leaders are dealing with sustainability concerns, but through collaborative class projects, will also have the chance to engage with these leaders and motivate other students to get involved in the political process. The goal is to give students the opportunity to impress on decision makers the need to take issues of sustainability seriously.
