A double win for the Vanier Marketing and Finance Teams
at the 2015 Dawson Case Competition
by David Moscovitz and Jessica Andrews, also spent many months
preparing for Marketing section of the Dawson Case Competition.
“Having Vanier Marketing and Accounting students participate in
case competitions of this nature truly enhances student
learning,” says David Moscovitz, Coordinator of Vanier College
Business Administration and Marketing team coach. “When
students leave the classroom to participate in activities like this
they get a valuable real world experience that allows them to put
into practice what they learn in the classroom.”
“We were the only college in Quebec that reached the podium in
both Accounting and Marketing,” says David Moscovitz. “Both
Vanier teams came in third place and they both performed
exceptionally well. A tribute to all of us who teach our students
with such commitment and passion. We should all be proud!!”
Marguerite Corriveau, Vanier Communications and Corporate Affairs
Congratulations to the Vanier College Business Administration
teams who made it to the podium at the 2015 Dawson College
Bilingual Case Competition. Both the Vanier Marketing team and
the Accounting team won third place in their respective

What is Sustainability?
''Sustainability is not exclusively or even primarily an
environmental issue... It is fundamentally about how we choose to
live our lives, with an awareness that everything we do has
consequences for the seven billion of us here today as well as for
the billions more who will follow, for centuries to come'' Helen
Clark, Administrator of the UN Development Program (UNDP).
Please spread the word about
it as it is meant to inform the
greater Vanier Community of
our progress. It will be too
early to garden per say, but we

Gardening at Vanier! This year again, Vanier gardeners (staff,
teachers, students...) will be rolling their sleeves to enhance
Vanier’s biodiversity and improve its sustainability. We are all

What does the Sustainability Major consist of?
This College Wide Major is designed for students of any program
to explore a wide spectrum of environmental, economic and
social issues faced by the planet, locally or globally. While
studying in their respective programs, students get exposed to
issues of sustainability through a variety of related courses,
events and experiences. To complete the Sustainability Major
students must take six courses among those that qualify for the
major. These courses are listed on our webpage and are available
in a wide variety of fields including English, French, Humanities,
Science and Social Science. Students must also attend a minimum
of three academic events with sustainability content. Finally,
they need to complete a total of 30 hours of volunteer work,
averaging 10 hours per semester, in local College or Community
projects related to sustainability. Once enrolled, students receive
weekly newsletters providing relevant information and
announcing upcoming events and volunteer opportunities.
How to inform students?
If you are a teacher presently giving a course with a sustainability
content, please inform your students that they can enroll in the
Major at any time, by contacting me, as long as they still have a
few semesters left to complete the requirements. I might also be
able to visit your class, depending on my schedule. If your course
is not listed on the website and you think it may quality, please
let me know.

A Faculty mobility grant to Jailson Lima for a looking at
creativity and other innovations as pedagogical tools
I am pleased to announce that Jailson Lima, a Chemistry teacher,
has been awarded a faculty mobility grant to implement the
project Exploring creativity and other innovations as pedagogical
tools for fostering learning in the natural sciences.
The Aquatic Program is pleased to announce its 5th annual Swima-thon. This year’s event will raise funds for the Malawi Nursing
Exchange Program. Since 2011, the Vanier Nursing department
has been offering their graduating students the opportunity to
complete the final six weeks of their three-year program, in SubSaharan Africa. To date 30 students have participated. As part of
our agreement with Kamuzu College of Nursing, we are obligated
to reciprocate each year by offering two Malawian students the
chance to have an international experience and to learn about
nursing in a different context.
Your donations will assist us to make this a reality for two
students, who have not travelled beyond Malawi’s borders, to
join us here at Vanier for the Fall semester. This will surely be a
transformative learning experience.
Please help us make this exchange a reality by supporting one of
the swimmers with a pledge!
WHERE & WHEN?
Vanier College pool (821 Sainte-Croix, Saint-Laurent, H4L-3X9) on
Friday May 22nd 2015 from 13:00 to 15:00. The swim-a-thon will
be divided into two groups: solo swimmers, if you are up to the
challenge, will be swimming from 13:00 to 14:00 and team
swimmers (teams of minimum 4 and maximum 8) will be
swimming from 14:00 to 15:00.
In June, Jailson will visit the Institute of Chemistry Education at
the University of Cologne, Germany, to explore the Institute’s
research in innovative methods for teaching science. The
Institute is a leading European Centre that is devoted to research
in science pedagogy, and the University has over 15,000 students
in its teacher-training programs. The goal of this collaboration is
to exchange expertise in including both technology and creativity
in the curriculum.
This partnership between Vanier College and the Institute of
Chemistry Education was proposed by Professor Christiane
Reiners, who is the head of that Institute. She attended the
workshop Using creativity to promote deep understanding of
chemistry concepts, which was presented by Jailson at the 23rd
IUPAC International Conference on Chemistry Education in
Toronto in July 2014. The workshop’s structure was inspired by
the instructional methods that he has been developing at Vanier
College since 2009 to foster learning using creativity. In this
pioneering project, students’ learning is enhanced by having
them create visual artworks that convey core scientific
concepts. This approach results in greater engagement and more
individualized learning than traditional techniques. Jailson’s
research on creativity will be shared with Professsor Reiners’
research group, who will in turn share their expertise in training
teachers in innovative pedagogy, including the use of
technology. Benefits will result for both institutions.
Professor Reiners’ research group also investigates how the
curriculum for teacher development can be improved using
authentic learning practices. Other research interests in her
group include cooperative curriculum development of university
researchers and practicing teachers, as well as developing
innovative teaching and learning methods that can be used in
restructuring lab-work activities. Learning about these
techniques will be an asset to Vanier College’s science program
by offering new opportunities for professional development to
science teachers.
We wish Jailson well in this exciting exchange with the University
of Cologne.

STEM Centre Design Competition: Proposal Showcase
In February, we officially launched the STEM Centre Design
Competition where Vanier students were invited to collaborate
on presenting proposals for how they envision the Science
Technology Engineering and Mathematics Centre that will launch
with the coming Library renovations within the next few years.
Now that the competition has come to an end, students will be
present in F-540 on Wednesday, April 22nd during UB (starting at
12pm) to present their proposals to the Vanier community and
answer any questions. Each team will be given approximately 10
minutes to showcase with materials of their choice.
Part of the Vanier Indigenous Circle’s mission is to increase
cultural and linguistic awareness of Indigenous cultures on
campus. We will be presenting relevant facts and, since we are on
unceded Mohawk territory, Mohawk words.
Did you know that the “Iroquois Confederacy” which consists of
six Iroquois nations in the Quebec, Ontario and New York regions
(Mohawk, Seneca, Cayuga, Oneida, Onondaga and Tuscarora), is a
political alliance based on the Great Law of Peace
(Kaianero’ko:wa) and predates colonization. Oral tradition dates
it to approximately 1142 C.E.

Teaching Tip: Mindfulness Teaching
Mindfulness is the act of
being aware of your
surroundings and your
thoughts on purpose. In
this high-tech world,
teachers and students are
exposed to an incredible
amount of sensory input
every day. By making an
effort to periodically focus
Image courtesy of graur razvan ionut /
our attention inward, we
Freedigitalphotos.net
can reduce the amount of
stress and anxiety that our fast paced environment tends to
produce.
Contemplative Pedagogy
Vanderbilt University’s Centre for Teaching calls the act of
mindfulness incorporated into higher education Contemplative
Pedagogy. Some of our main goals as teachers are to increase
students’ critical thinking and learning skills, and studies have
shown that incorporating focused thought and meditative
practices into the classroom do just that. Some of us may be less
comfortable introducing strict meditation into our classrooms, so
below are some quick mindful strategies that can be more
smoothly integrated.
For Individual Students
Kristin L. Roush of Faculty Focus makes some recommendations
that can encourage mindfulness thinking in your students, which
results in more classroom engagement and student focus.
 Have students write their name and date on an in-class
assignment with their non-dominant hand
 Have students identify, either verbally or in writing, what
typically distracts them during class
 Have students take a few breaths consciously, focusing all of
their thoughts on the process
While all of these may seem like simple inconsequential actions,
encouraging your students to contemplate the above activities
will focus their attention, make them more ready to learn, and
even reduce stress or anxiety before an exam.
For Groups of Students
Before students break into groups to engage in the active
learning activities you have designed, ask them to assess the
classroom and group environment. By noticing the placement of
their group within the class, and the use of body language and
classroom furniture within the group, they may become more
aware of what helps or hinders effective group work and
conversation.
100th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide
On Monday, April 27, an information
display on the Armenian Genocide will
be presented in Jake’s Mall by Vanier
students, Ermine Paronyan and
Harutyun Mardanyan, with the support
of the VCSA.
Practice what you Teach!
By modelling the mindfulness practices in which you encourage
your students to engage, you can also reap the benefits of
increased focus and attention. Try a mindfulness strategy while
walking to class, waiting for students to arrive, during the break,
or even while erasing the whiteboard. You may find that the
stress and anxiety that you face as a teacher with regard to
deadlines, assessments, and preparation slowly start to drop or
be more manageable.

learning, contact us at the PDO!

Sustainability-in-Action, Fall 2015
Do you want to help preserve the environment while earning
course credit at the same time? This fall, the theme of the
universal complementary course, Sustainability in Action, is “The
Politics of Engagement.” With two major political events taking
place during the fall semester—the Canadian federal election and
the Paris UN Climate Change Conference—students will not only
learn about how our leaders are dealing with sustainability
concerns, but through collaborative class projects, will also have
the chance to engage with these leaders and motivate other
students to get involved in the political process. The goal is to
give students the opportunity to impress on decision makers the
need to take issues of sustainability seriously.
If you are interested in taking the course, please contact Mark
Cohen or Richard Klopp by MIO. We will be organising infosessions in the coming weeks. In the meantime, you can visit the
course blog at:

This Week from the Music Department
The old expression says “no rest for the wicked.” In the case of
our Vanier music students and teachers, that should be amended
to say “no rest for the wickedly good” with even more concerts
popping up this week from Vanier Music. First up is the Vanier

1. Voulez-vous aller au théâtre _____ au cinéma?

GARDENS!
Did you know that…
 … Vanier College inaugurated its collective vegetable
and flower gardens in May 2014?
 … all the gardening is done by volunteers in the
Vanier community, including teachers, staff and
students?
 … you can use gardening hours toward the S.T.A.R.
program or for any volunteering you might need?
 … you don’t need any gardening knowledge to get
involved?
In conjunction with the
Sustainability Major
Garden Party! April 24, 10:00-13:00 at the garden
shed (in front of B-wing). Drop by and share your
gardening dream for Vanier!

Swim-a-thon 2015
The Aquatic Program is pleased to announce its 5th annual swim-a-thon. This year’s event will raise
funds for the Malawi Nursing Exchange Program. Since 2011, the Vanier Nursing department has
been offering their graduating students the opportunity to complete the final six weeks of their three
year program, in Sub-Saharan Africa. To date 30 students have participated. As part of our
agreement with Kamuzu College of Nursing, we are obligated to reciprocate each year by offering two
Malawian students the chance to have an international experience and to learn about nursing in a
different context.
Your donations will assist us to make this a reality for two students, who have not travelled beyond
Malawi’s borders, to join us here at Vanier for the Fall semester. This will surely be a transformative
learning experience.
Please help us make this exchange a reality by supporting one of the swimmers with a pledge!
WHERE & WHEN?

maximum 8) will be swimming from 14:00 to 15:00.
