We scheduled some fantastic activities coming up for you in November, including a special event planned for the Veterans (with pumpkin pie and music) put on by the Auxiliary Women! Unfortunately, we can’t have it on Veteran’s Day, so watch those calendars! We have some wonderful musicians this month with Duke Zecco, Steve Szydel and Michael Nelson entertaining us. Michael travels all over the United States performing piano concerts, so come check it out & I’m sure you’ll be amazed! Our second graders are coming back starting Nov. 14th but they can’t come in the mornings. Instead they will be here at 1:30 pm. on Friday afternoons! Maybe that’s a good thing….. Every one will be more awake!! We will also be going to Jerry David’s yearly fall banquet for Gentle Shepherds Ministry. It’s a free will offering & a huge turkey dinner. We’ll be leaving at 6:00 pm. Let me know if you’d like to be put on the list to attend. Gentle Shepherds Ministry does the worship service here at Oak Terrace every Sunday. We are blessed to have them! Just to let you know, a study is being conducted through a psychologist at MSU here at Oak Terrace. Twice a week classes on cognitive training (like mind teasers) are being given to a group of residents picked by the professor. If you would like to participate we will be starting a new group the first of the year. Let me know…. *Also make sure you sign up quickly if you plan on going to “Red Lobster” with us. It fills up fast! Hope all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving month and stay warm! From your activity turkeys….. Happy Birthday Linda’s Communique’ Thanksgiving tradition is a great opportunity to open ourselves to a full season of gratitude. I'm a big believer in the power and benefits of being grateful. I think it's a major cornerstone in building your best life!! If you want to start attracting positive things into your life, there is one small thing you should do every day—show your gratitude, appreciation and love for the people and things around you. On a daily basis, find something you are appreciative of or find something you are grateful for. Try starting a journal. You might even want to call it your appreciation journal or gratitude journal and go to it and write five minutes a day. By acknowledging what you are grateful for in your journal you'll become a deliberate attractor of positive vibrations. If you are noticing what you appreciate and what you are grateful for, you can't be noticing what you don't like. As more of your thoughts and words become positive, you'll start attracting more positive people and circumstances. Decide today that you are going to reduce negativity in your life by getting rid of the 'don'ts,' 'nots' and 'no's'— the negative thoughts and get in the habit of appreciating things!!! Let this Thanksgiving forge an opening to a bigger and better way of showing up in the world. Practice being thankful every day. Then wait to be amazed! to all our OT residents who have a Birthday!!! Robert Curran Jean Lindberg Lorena Peters Maynard Larson 9th 15th 24th 25th Another OT Guess Who???? **Last month’s Guess Who was: Lois Berg !! Did you guess correctly? On Mondays this month Lorrie will be discussing and reading about Indian folklores and the difficulties the first pioneers in America faced. Oh, how easy we have it today! A Native American grandfather talking to his young grandson tells the boy he has two wolves inside of him struggling with each other. The first is the wolf of peace, love and kindness. The other wolf is fear, greed and hatred. Which wolf will win, grandfather? asks the young boy. Whichever one I feed, is the reply. Don’t Forget to On November 4th at OTW The most powerful thing we own is our vote. Bev Perdue Spotlight on Donna Hall Donna was born right here at the hospital in Mankato. Her parents lived in town at the time but when she was five or six they moved to a farm in St. Clair. Her father farmed and her mother was a housewife but also worked at a local grocery store. Donna was the oldest of a brother and a sister. Her brother passed away several years ago & her sister lives in Lincoln, Nebraska with her husband. Donna started school in Mankato, then transferred to St. Clair in the second grade and graduated from St. Clair High School in 1948. She enjoyed school with her favorite class being English. She remembers the year that they had that terrible snow storm…. the one where duck hunters froze in their boats and kids barely made it home from school!!! One of her good friends asked Donna to be a bridesmaid in her wedding while she was making plans for the wedding at her house. This good friend’s name was Donna Hall. (At the time Donna’s maiden name was Pierce). Also sitting at the kitchen table was a soft spoken young man home from the war named Jack. He had the nicest smile she’d ever seen. They dated & of course they were both in the wedding for his cousin & her friend. When her friend was on her honeymoon she wrote to Donna & said “Just think if you marry Jack, you’ll have the same name as I did.” Jack did propose to her by slipping a ring on her finger and eventually asking her! They were married at the St. Clair Methodist Church in 1948! Their first son, Greg, was born in 1949 and is married to Mary Lou. They live in rural Janesville. Penny, their second child is married to Bruce Kirby and they live in rural Courtland. Bradley was born next and he’s married to Joyce. They live in Bellingham, Washington where he’s a commercial fisherman! Brian, their youngest son, is married to Shirley, and they reside in rural Good Thunder…. and between the two of them have raised five children. Donna’s husband Jack worked for forty years at “Archer Daniels”, a soybean processing plant in Mankato. After their kids were older she got a job at J C Penny’s. They moved several times, living for seventeen years just three miles south of the Junction, but eventually settled in Mankato. For the last ten years of Jack’s life Donna took care of him at home. He went into Hillcrest Nursing Home for a few years before he passed away. She said she wouldn’t trade her life for anyone else’s; she had a wonderful husband, good children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and a very wonderful life! Donna is such a nice lady, make sure you introduce yourself to her if you haven’t already!
