Terry Sauvageot, principal of Kenna Elementary, was named the Director of the Community Education Program at the December Board of Education meeting and will start in the new position in February. Sauvageot is replacing former director, Clara Jett, who announced her retirement at the end of October. Jett has had a distinguished career with Kanawha County Schools. Over the course of 46 years she has been a teacher, vice principal, and principal. She then moved into the administrative area as the Director of Pre-K, and then came to the William J. Raglin Community Education Center in 2012 as the Director of Community Education. “Clara is one of those people who is well known and well loved throughout the school system by parents, former students and school employees from all areas of the county. You can’t go anywhere with her that she doesn’t know someone,” said Jennifer Mathis, KCSCEP Program Manager. “She will certainly be missed, but we are happy for her and we look forward to working with our new director, who is also a very experienced KCS professional.” Sauvageot has had an equally distinguished career. She has been in education for 31 years, 21 of which were spent as a principal. Before coming to Kanawha County Schools, her first year of teaching was in Fayette County at Mt. Hope Middle School. She has worked at many schools throughout Kanawha County, including Cedar Grove, Spring Hill Elementary, Ruffner, Bridgeview, Bridge, Ruthlawn, Richmond and Kenna. She was named the National Distinguished Principal for West Virginia for 2014 by the National Association of Elementary School Principals. Her love for students and their families are the driving force in her quest for excellence in education. Terry Sauvageot is the new Director for KCS Community Education. “It has always been my mantra that kids come first,” Sauvageot said. “Everything else is secondary. It is a joy to work with kids and it is a joy to work with their families -- to meet and work with people from different backgrounds. I love diversity.” Sauvageot says she is looking forward to working with everyone in the Community Education programs. “I am going to be doing a lot of listening and learning about how our Third Base, On Deck and day care programs serve the community,” she said. “My door is always open to suggestions.” Sauvageot’s husband, Michael, is the engineering teacher and a former football coach at South Charleston High School, and they have two daughters. Elizabeth is a NICU nurse at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville and Emily is a senior in Speech Pathology at Marshall University. The family also includes a “fur baby”, Callie, who is an English Pointer. Summer Camp Forms KCSCEP will offer three summer camps this year. These will be at Elk Center, Flinn, and Alban elementary schools. Enrollment forms will be available at all Third Base sites and on our website by late March/early April. An enrollment open house will also be held in early May. Ruthlawn Third Base Students Give Back Giving back — Ruthlawn Third Base students learned about community service by conducting a food drive for two local church food pantries. Thank you to all the students and their families who participated in the drive. In November 2015, Ruthlawn Third Base students had a food drive to help pantries at two local churches, Davis Creek Church of the Nazarene and Ruth Community Church. The students in the program had a friendly competition of girls versus boys to see who could bring in the most food items. The girls won bragging rights, but everyone came out a winner because nearly 1600 food items were collected. The food drive the previous year brought in 870 items, so the donations were nearly doubled this year. Third Base Rules: Word Scramble The following is a list of rules for all KCSCEP sites. Unscramble the mixed up word in each line to complete the rule. (Answers below) Important Reminders for Parents: Program Fees are due the first day of the week that your child attends. These are weekly fees. There are no daily rates. Late fees are added each day the fee is unpaid. If all fees are not paid by the end of the week, your child may not return until the fees are paid. Third Base closes at 5:40 p.m. Pick ups after that time will incur a $1 per minute per child late fee. This fee must be paid at the time of pick up. Late fees will not be waived. Families with DHHR assistance through CONNECT or LINK must have a current certificate listing coverage dates, as well as days and hours allowed. Only people listed on the registration form may sign in or pick up your child. If you are sending someone who is not on your list, please send a note or call the director. A photo ID is required for pick ups. If Kanawha County Schools are closed, we are closed, including when students are dismissed early for bad weather or other problems. On days with a 2hour delay, On Deck will be closed. Third Base is open for the monthly scheduled early dismissals. 1. Keep hands and feet to lurfeyos. ______________________ 2.
