Nick Ryan - Chair of Judges
Thrown out of university in Adelaide and moving to Sydney, Nick Ryan used the knowledge he’d
gained raiding his old man’s cellar to land a job with one of Sydney’s leading wine merchants.
Realising that writing about it was easier than lifting it has led him to where he is now. He’s the
Wine Columnist for The Australian newspaper and Wine Business Monthly, writes regularly for GQ
and Gourmet Traveller Wine and pens a surprisingly popular weekly column musing on life for
Adelaide’s Sunday Mail. Nick has judged in many Australian and international wine shows and is a
graduate of the prestigious Len Evans Tutorial. He is excited by wines that are just as interesting
by the fourth glass as they are at the first and would give it all up to play one game for the Port
Adelaide Football Club.
David Brookes
David Brookes is a freelance wine journalist contributing to Australian Gourmet Traveller WINE,
Wine Companion and The Adelaide Review. Originally from North Canterbury, New Zealand,
David now lives in South Australia’s Barossa Valley where he is the principal consultant at Wine
Marketing Labs, providing brand management, digital strategy, and in-bound marketing services
for wineries and regions across Australia. With 23 years in the wine industry his experience spans
retail, wholesale, winery, secondary market and brand management. He is a sought-after judge on
the Australian and international wine show circuit judging at around 10 major and regional wine
shows a year. David was awarded Dux of the prestigious Len Evans Tutorial in 2011.
Sue Bell
Sue Bell is Winemaker and Director of Bellwether, establishing it after learning her craft in small
and large corporate wineries in Australia, the USA, and France. Sue loves the cool climate
classics, Coonawarra Cabernet and Tasmanian Chardonnay and dabbles with climate-appropriate
varieties and regions under her climate change range, ‘Ant Series.’ Sue is a strong advocate of the
use of indigenous yeast and promotion of a healthier drinking culture in Australia. Sue is an active
wine show judge, a Dux of the Len Evans Tutorial, supporter of regional and national bodies and
graduate of the Australian Rural Leadership Program. In 2014 she was named the ASVO
Winemaker of the Year.
Tim Dolan (Associate Judge)
Tim is the third generation of his family to make wine in the Barossa, following his father, Nigel,
and grandfather Bryan – two of the most influential winemakers of their respective eras. In 2005,
he enrolled at the University of Adelaide to study winemaking. Intent on forging a career in his own
right, Tim set a course to amass as much international experience as possible since graduating in
2008, working vintages in eight different regions across the USA, Italy, Canada, and Australia, and
earning him the title of the “flying winemaker.” Continuing the tradition of working with family, Nigel,
Tim, and sisters Rebecca and Sarah established Dolan Family Wines in 2007.
