The Dyer Island Conservation Trust (www.dict.org.za) promotes the
conservation of marine life in the greater Dyer Island Area. We sponsor
biologists to do continuous research on the whales, sharks, penguins, seals
and dolphins. We can conserve better by understanding more. Our African
Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary (APSS) opens soon, where we will care for
injured seabirds in order to release them. In case of finding an injured bird or
sea animal, please contact the Dyer Island Conservation Trust on 028 384 3273
or 082 907 5607. We will assist.
Please keep an eye out for our fishing line bins along the coastline. Fishing line
causes injury and death to our seabirds and other animals. We also do mon ly
beach cleanups with local school groups.
The Southern Right Whale above you is real! She washed up in September
2005 on Pearly Beach. She was probably hit by a ship - notice the pink areas
are where her injuries occurred and which were reconstructed. Her skeleton
is 14m long and weighs 1,5 tons.
Renowned taxidermist Piet Pretorius undertook the process to remove the
bones from the carcass and clean them which takes many years. The whale
was finally raised at The Great White House in May 2012. Our staff will gladly
share the whole story with you.
