Mendocino(Turning(Guild(September(2012(Meeting(

The$meeting$was$held$at$Derald’s$shop$on$September$9.$$

The$treasurer$reported$$593.01$in$the$treasury.$
$
Brian$suggested$that$the$guild$consider$purchasing$a$booth$$for$$85$at$next$years$craft$fair.$$
$
Rod$brought$two$of$his$flutes$one$of$which$is$a$reproduction$of$the$original$Edinburg$Ivory$flute.$$$$
They$were$made$out$of$black$wood$with$engraved$silver$keys.$$Rod$graced$us$with$a$short$playing.$

Lee$showed$us$a$lidded$mahogany$bowl$made$by$Graham$for$him.$$He$also$attended$a$decorative$
lidded$box$class$at$the$Center$for$Furniture$Craftsmanship$in$Maine.$$He$turned$three$black$wood$
boxes.$$$The$wood$is$from$Canada$and$is$left$over$ends$from$clarinet$production.$$Lee$is$able$to$order$
more$blanks$if$anyone$is$interested.$

Les$turned$a$bowl$from$a$piece$of$walnut$he$won$at$our$raffle.$

The$demonstration$was$given$by$Harolde$on$goblet$turning.$$He$brought$several$goblets$that$he$
turned$out$of$Noble$Fir$that$he$cut$down$in$his$back$yard$and$one$turned$out$of$oak$salvaged$from$a$
firewood$pile.$$He$uses$riven$wood$to$minimize$grain$run$out$on$the$stem.$$$

Harolde$finishes$the$bowl$with$beeswax,$which$is$food$(in$this$case$drink)$safe.$$He$has$a$unique$way$
of$supporting$the$bowl$while$turning$the$stem.$$$A$small$piece$of$cloth$is$stuffed$into$the$bowl$and$the$
tailstock$with$a$revolving$center$is$placed$against$it.$$This$prevents$marring$the$finished$surface.$
