Recognizing the Best of the Best
FALL 2014
FAULCONER CONSTRUCTION NEWSLETTER
BY JACK SANFORD, JR., PRESIDENT
A
few years back, we invested a lot of time charting the next phase for Faulconer Construction.
For a company that can trace its roots back for a century, we’ve survived competition of all
shapes and sizes, economic swings, the introduction of technology…you name it.
Looking ahead, we wanted to focus on what has made Faulconer Construction so strong –
for so long. That comes back to the quality of our people, and the values we live by every day.
This year marks the 3rd Annual Jack
Sanford Sr. LITE Awards, named after my
father, who dedicated decades of his life
instilling these values into our work – Legacy,
Integrity, Team, and Excellence – alongside
Safety which is most important thing we can
focus on every single day.
The LITE Awards reflect your nomination
of co-workers and peers as the best of the best
in our company. Some of our winners have
only been on the job with Faulconer for a
couple of years – but immediately have made
an impact. Others have been with us for 25
years or more. The one thing they all have
in common is “walking the walk” – always
respecting and looking out for each other and
doing the right thing on the job even when no
one is looking.

When the nomination forms for the 2014
LITE Awards hit your office or job site in
October, make sure to nominate one or more of the folks you look up to the most in our company. They
deserve the recognition, and it helps us stay strong as we look ahead to our future.
Three Major Projects
Drive Faulconer Forward
F
or the past several years, all of
us at Faulconer Construction
have focused on the values
and work ethic that defines our
culture – even as our industry fell
upon uncertain times.
Because of this commitment,
Faulconer Construction is poised
for success as the economy begins to
rebound and we compete for the top
jobs across the region. This year, we
are driving forward on three major
projects that highlight the depth and
breadth of our capabilities.
In North Carolina, Faulconer
Construction is helping Electrolux
expand its existing headquarters
on a very aggressive timetable. In
Virginia, we have capitalized on
past success and translated strong
relationships into more high-profile
work.
In Charlottesville, the
Stonefield development once again
called on Faulconer for sitework on
21 acres required for the
construction of a 150,000 sq. ft.
Costco and fuel facility. In the
Southwest region, Faulconer is again
working with VDOT along the
heavily trafficked I-81 corridor.
“While these three are not the
only active projects for Faulconer
Construction today, they paint a
solid picture of where we are and
where we are headed,” said Jack
Sanford, Jr., President. “The quality
of the work we do today helps define
where we will be working tomorrow.
When we live up to our values, we
leave a lasting impression, and we
are entrusted with the jobs where
everything has to go just right.”
THE 2014 LITE AWARDS
DEPEND ON YOU
The 3rd Annual Jack Sanford Sr. LITE
Awards nominations are about to
kickoff and the outcome is driven by you.
Each year, we honor five members of
our team who “walk the walk” when it
comes to one or more of the five LITE
Award categories:
Legacy • Integrity
Team • Excellence • Safety
Junior Weaver receives the 2013
Legacy Award.
In mid-October, every employee will
receive forms to nominate one or
more co-workers. Winners receive a
celebratory meal for their entire crew
and a special gift.
We want every member of the
Faulconer family to nominate at least
one co-worker.
Stay tuned for more details on the 2014
LITE Awards nomination process,
and we look forward to honoring our
winners with you during the holidays.

Major Projects Driving
Faulconer Forward
BY FRAN BURKE
Leaders Added in N.C.
In July and August, I put a lot of miles on my truck.
Over the course of several weeks, I visited most of
our job sites across Virginia and North Carolina to
talk about our Target Zero safety program and get
feedback from our crews.
The leadership of Faulconer Construction has a saying
that rings true now more than ever. It’s easy to replace a
good piece of machinery. It’s very, very difficult to find
great people for our team.
Even though it was the hottest stretch of the
summer, our team was in good spirits at every stop.
We all know that’s a pretty tall order. As a way of
reporting back to so many of you who participated, I
wanted to touch on three themes I heard consistently
along the way.
We are proud to introduce eight new members of our
leadership team in North Carolina. They represent our
continuing commitment to attracting and developing
our people into leaders: on the job, in the community,
and at home with our families. Congratulations, and
welcome to the team.
In the heart of University Research Park in
Charlotte lies the North American Headquarters
for AB Electrolux. In order to meet its growing
demands for office space for research and
development, marketing, design, engineering
and executive management, Electrolux is
expanding its existing headquarters with a new
6-floor, 375,000 square foot building adjacent to
its current facility. With plans to add 810 new jobs
by 2017, the fast track project employs a very
aggressive schedule.
169 Years of Experience
The existing property consists of a large grade
differential requiring the use of a tiered
segmental wall configuration to accommodate
the additional parking spaces necessary, as well
as infrastructure for a new road to be converted
to a city street. Before the project is complete,
Faulconer will have excavated over 800,000
cubic yards of dirt, rock and topsoil. Additionally
it will install over 100,000 square feet of
segmental walls, 27,290 square yards of parking
lot, and 17,310 SY of Heavy Duty Road.
I
People are successfully kicking the habit.
Our new Tobacco-Free Policy is a big change, but
employees across the company are taking it to heart.
At every stop, at least one person told me about how
the program has changed their health on and off the
job, and even resulted in family members joining in
too. For example, Jerry Hart and his wife Marie at the
Monticello job are feeling better than ever—and not
missing spending that extra cash week in and
week out.
We really appreciate everyone’s continued
commitment to this program.
We are taking better care of our vehicles.
At the Spring Kickoff, Bob Z. reminded us of all the
reasons why we need to focus on safety behind the
wheel. Accidents threaten the health and wellbeing
of our team. They cost the enterprise significantly in
repairs and insurance costs. And they also add up fast
when we report on our Safety performance—it’s the
type of red flag that can keep Faulconer out of the
running for the best jobs around.
This year, we haven’t been perfect, but we’ve been a
heck of a lot better. Keep it up.
The new employee orientation process is going well.
We all know Faulconer has big jobs going on and that
trend hopefully will continue. You’ve heard us say time
and again what makes us strong and keeps us busy is
our commitment to our process, our values, and our
culture.
Thanks in large part to Shannon Ferguson, the guys
who have joined our team this year have gone through
a new orientation process that both welcomed and
trained them up, fast. We will continue to build on this
program to ensure that as we grow, we grow stronger
and more united along the way.
Thanks again to everyone who participated in the
Site Safety Visits this summer. We’re going to finish
up 2014 strong.

Building Goodness
BY ROBERT HATTLER, PROJECT ENGINEER
On March 27th, 2014 Faulconer Construction continued our long
tradition of community service by taking part in Building Goodness
Foundation’s charity building project. Faulconer was given a house in
need and asked to renovate one room. After much discussion we
decided that the bathroom was in the need of the most TLC. On
Friday March 28th the project team of Lester Wolfrey, Mike Breeden,
Hector Menendez, Victor Gomez, Rob Hattler and Drew Bagby began
the renovation in earnest.
The team took Faulconer values to heart and tackled the
project as if it was for one of Faulconer’s biggest clients! Thursday
was a complete gut of the bathroom down to the studs and floor
joists. Kim Taylor arrived on day 2 to help the bathroom take shape as
new walls and a new floor were installed with the trade rough-ins fast
on our heels. Day 3 saw the finish work come together as a new

shower, toilet, vanity and floor were all installed! You hear companies
speak about performing good works throughout their community.
At Faulconer we are guided by our values.
