SEASON REVIEW O le Miss opened a new era of basketball in 200708 as Renee Ladner moved over one seat on the bench to begin her tenure as head coach of the Rebels. Ladner, a 1981 graduate of Ole Miss who had spent the previous four seasons as an assistant coach for the Rebels, would finally have the opportunity to begin her career as a collegiate head coach in charge of the program for which she encompasses so much passion. Ladner's debut as head coach of the Rebels would not be easy as the team opened the season on the road against Big 12 foe Nebraska. If playing on the road in a hostile environment to begin the season wasn't already enough to give a young team trouble, the Rebels were dealt an even bigger blow later in the game as freshman All-SEC performer Alliesha Easley suffered a season-ending ACL injury. Nonetheless, Nebraska would go on to post an 8059 victory. Despite the outcome at Nebraska, Ladner didn't have to wait very long to collect her first career win as the Rebels responded with a convincing 86-60 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette. Shawn Goff turned in a careerhigh 23 points and both Shantell Black and Kayla Melson registered 10 assists apiece. In fact, it was only the third time in school history and first since 1986 that two Rebels has recorded double-digit assists in the same game. The Rebels continued their winning ways in the following game with a 73-57 victory over Alabama A&M. Senior Carla Bartee recorded her second double-double of the season as she finished the game with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Goff added a double-double of her own as she poured in 10 points and 11 rebounds to help Ole Miss improve to 2-1 on the young season. Following its win over the Bulldogs, Ole Miss headed west to sunny California for a Thanksgiving tournament hosted by Pepperdine University. The Rebels were paired with Wisconsin to open the event, and were beaten by the Badgers by a final score of 74-57. Ole Miss was next scheduled to take on host Pepperdine the following day, but a breakout of wildfires in and around the Malibu area forced tournament officials to cancel the remainder of the tournament. Ole Miss put the finishing touches on the month of November by returning home to take on UAB. The Rebels held the Blazers to just 23.1 percent shooting from the field, and Bartee pulled down a career-high 18 rebounds, including eight offensive, to lead Ole Miss to a 74-62 win and a 3-2 overall record in the opening month of the season. Ole Miss definitely didn't receive any early Christmas presents as the Rebels opened the month of December with a trip to No. 17 Ohio State. In that game, Goff put Ole Miss ahead by three points with just over eight minutes remaining, but Ohio State responded by scoring 17 unanswered points over the next seven minutes to break the game wide open en route to a 69-55 win. Following their setback at Ohio State, the Rebels returned to Tad Smith Coliseum to play host to Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Bartee continued her recent trend of double-doubles by collecting 18 points and 13 boards to lead the way in a 73-64 victory for the homestanding Rebels. Goff finished the contest with 12 points and seven rebounds to go along with four blocked shots. With her four rejections, Goff moved into fifth place all-time in school history with 93 career rejections. The Rebels returned to the road in the following game with a trip north to take on Penn State. Ole Miss received double digit scoring performances from four different players, but it wasn't enough to 72 hand the Lady Lions their first home loss of the season. The Rebels, however, answered in the following game with a dominating performance on the road against the Miami Hurricanes. Goff made the most of her return to her home state by finishing with 13 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots. Her six rejections were tied for the second most in a single game in school history. In just her second game of the year, sophomore LaKendra Phillips provided Ole Miss with a spark as she scored a careerhigh 12 points in helping the Rebels to a 65-52 victory. After a loss to North Carolina State inside the Tad Pad, Ole Miss traveled to Montana to take part in the Lady Griz Holiday Classic hosted by the University of Montana. In the first game of the event against UC Santa Barbara, Ole Miss sophomore Bianca Thomas tallied a career-high 22 points, but the Gauchos were able to hold off a late Rebel run to earn a 74-66 victory. Ole Miss committed 24 turnovers the following night against Montana in the final game of the tournament. The Lady Griz turned those miscues into 28 points en route to an 84-77 win and tournament championship. Despite the 0-2 record in the tournament, Goff was named to the All-Tournament Team after turning in a pair of double-digit scoring outputs. In the final game of the non-conference portion of the schedule, the Rebels took on Central Michigan for the first time in school history. The Chippewas proved to be a formidable opponent by taking the Rebels into overtime with a late three-pointer near the end of regulation. Ole Miss, however, made sure there would be no upset on that day as the Rebels outscored Central Michigan 16-5 in overtime to secure a 81-70 victory. Sophomore Elizabeth Robertson notched her first career double-double as she recorded career-highs with 19 points and 12 rebounds. With a little bit of momentum on their side, the Rebels faced a daunting task as Ole Miss traveled to Athens, Ga., to take on 10th-ranked Georgia in the SEC opener. 2008-09 OLE MISS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL SEASON REVIEW Trailing 38-27 at the half, Black scored nine straight points for Ole Miss in a 75 second span to cut the Lady Bulldog lead to just four points early in the second half. Georgia responded with a 15-2 run and never let the Rebels get any closer en route to a 75-62 win. Ladner killed two birds with one stone in the next game as she picked up her first career SEC win and her first victory over a ranked team as Ole Miss earned a 63-55 win over No. 20 Arkansas inside the Tad Pad. With the win, Ole Miss improved to 12-0 all-time at home against Arkansas. Ole Miss improved to 2-1 inside the SEC with a 74-61 win over South Carolina in the following game. The Rebels featured five different players in double figures, including a 14 point, 11 rebound performance from Goff. Robertson and freshman Kayla Melson each scored 14 points for Ole Miss. The Rebels next hit the road to take on in-state rival Mississippi State in search of their third win inside the SEC. The Lady Bulldogs were not very accommodating as MSU held Ole Miss to 27.4 percent shooting from the floor and held on for a 57-52 victory in what would be the first of three meetings between the two. After setbacks to both Vanderbilt and Tennessee, the Rebels hosted Alabama to begin the month of February. Ole Miss used a suffocating defensive effort to force the Crimson Tide in 28 turnovers on its way to a 76-47 victory. In addition, it was the third straight time that Ole Miss had held Alabama under 50 points. Bartee tallied her fifth double-double of the season as she collected 16 points and 10 rebounds. In its next game, Ole Miss nearly secured its first conference road win of the season at Kentucky, but the Wildcats managed to hold off a late Rebel charge for a 59-54 win. Down by two points with less than a minute remaining, Bartee attempted to put the Rebels ahead with a three-pointer from the top of the key, but her shot went just long and was then rebounded by Kentucky. In the second game of the road trip, South Carolina evened the season series at one game apiece as the Gamecocks posted a 71-62 win inside the Colonial Center. Rebel fans were treated to a nice Valentine's Day gift as Ole Miss posted a 73-65 win over in-state rival Mississippi State. Ole Miss dominated the first half and held a 51-24 lead at the break, but the Lady Bulldogs made a furious run late in the second half to cut the lead to just three points with just under four minutes remaining. Ole Miss, however, was a perfect 2-for-2 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line from that point on to hold on for the win. Following a loss at seventh-ranked LSU, Ole Miss returned to the Tad Pad and put together one of its best games of the season on its way to a 76-68 win over Auburn. The Rebel bench accounted for half of the team's scoring, including a 16-point performance from Thomas. The Rebels hit the road for the final time of the regular season with a trip to Alabama in hopes of claiming their first conference road win of the season. Ole Miss failed to disappoint as the Lady Rebels cruised to a 70-54 win over the Crimson Tide behind the 19 points of Thomas. Goff added 15 points, six rebounds, five blocked shots, two assists and two steals to help the Ole Miss effort. In addition, her five rejections upped her season total to 62 to give her the school record for the most blocked shots in a season. She would go on to finish the season with a total of 67 swats. In the final regular season game of the year, Ole Miss suffered a devastating 72-66 loss at the hands of the Florida Gators on Senior Day. With the loss, Ole Miss earned the No. 8 seed in the SEC Tournament and would take on rival and ninth-seeded Mississippi State in the opening round. Ole Miss advanced to the second round of the SEC Tournament for the fifth straight year as the Rebels posted a 54-49 win over the Lady Bulldogs. Thomas scored seven points in the final 1:46 to hold off Mississippi State and help Ole Miss improve to 6-1 all-time against Mississippi State in SEC Tournament play. Thomas finished the game with a game-high 18 points, including 3for-5 from beyond the arc. Senior forward Dee Forrest added nine points and nine rebounds, while Goff chipped in with eight points and five rebounds. With her five rebounds, Goff reached the 500 rebound plateau for her career. The Rebels' season came to an end in the next game as seventh-ranked LSU eliminated Ole Miss from the tournament behind the 17 points of Quianna Chaney. Although the Rebels were unable to achieve the successes they had set forth for themselves, the individual accomplishments did not go unnoticed. At the conclusion of the season, Goff was selected as a member of the All-SEC Second Team by both the league's coaches and the Associated Press. She finished the season first on the team and 12th in the SEC with 13 points per game. Goff was also second on the team and 13th in the league with 6.8 rebounds per game, while leading the league in blocked shots during the regular season. Goff was also selected as one of three finalists for the inaugural Cellular South Gillom Trophy, given annually to the top collegiate women's basketball player in the state of Mississippi. 2008-09 OLE MISS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 73 SEASON NOTES GET THAT OUTTA HERE Ole Miss junior center Shawn Goff was a force on the defensive end and produced a record-breaking season in 2007-08. Goff ended the regular season first in the SEC and 23rd in the nation with 2.33 blocked shots per game. During the course of the season, Goff recorded three blocked shots or more in a total of 16 games, including a career-high six rejections in the Rebels’ 65-52 win over Miami. Her six swats against the Hurricanes were tied for the second most blocked shots by any player in the SEC this season. Goff would go on to record 32 blocks during conference play to rank first in the league with the most blocks during league play. In the second to last game of the regular season, Goff turned away a game-high five shots to help Ole Miss to a 70-54 road win at Alabama. With those five rejections, Goff upped her season total to 62 blocked shots to surpass Susan Byrd for the most single season blocked shots in school history. Byrd recorded 60 blocked shots in 33 games played during the 1993-94 season. Goff finished the season with 67 rejections and enters the 2008-09 season on pace to set the school record for career blocked shots. MAY I HELP YOU? Rebel sophomore floor general Shantell Black proved to be one of the top distributers in the SEC last season. Black ended the season first in the conference with 5.03 assists per game and was the first Rebel to pace the league in helpers since Kim Bullard accomplished the feat during the 1985-86 season. That season, Bullard tallied 6.6 assists per game. Black turned in her best assist game of the season in the second game of the year as she dolled out 10 helpers in leading the Rebels to an 86-60 win over LouisianaLafayette. Overall, Black produced 15 games in which she collected five or more assists. A NEW ERA BEGINS In her first season as a head coach, Renee Ladner guided the Rebels to a 13-16 overall record, 6-8 inside the Southeastern Conference. Ole Miss finished the regular season tied for seventh place in the league standings and entered the SEC Tournament as the No. 8 seed. Ladner and the Rebels defeated in-state rival Mississippi State in the first round to advance into the second round for the fifth consecutive season. Ladner notched her first career win as a head coach in the second game of the season as the Rebels defeated Louisiana-Lafayette 86-60. Following that victory over the Ragin’ Cajuns, Ole Miss would go on to post an impressive 10-3 record inside Tad Smith Coliseum. Along the way, the Rebels upended No. 20 Arkansas 63-55 to give Ladner her first career victory over a nationallyranked team. POSTSEASON HONORS Following an outstanding season on both ends of the court, Shawn Goff was rewarded for her performance with her selection to the All-SEC Second Team as voted on by both the league’s coaches and the Associated Press. Goff finished the season ranked first on the team and 12th in the SEC with 13.0 points per game. She was also second on the team and 13th in the conference with 6.8 rebounds per game. Kayla Melson finished the season ranked 13th in the SEC with 3.10 assists per game. She was named SEC Freshman of the Week once during the season. FROSH OF THE WEEK Freshman Kayla Melson secured her first of what is sure to be many awards when she earned the SEC Freshman of the Week honor to open the month of December. Melson posted a pair of back-to-back double figure scoring games against UAB and Ohio State in helping Ole Miss to a 1-1 record in those games. Melson would go on to appear in every game for the Rebels last season and earn starts in all but two contests. Melson finished her freshman campaign ranked 13th in the SEC with 3.10 assists per game. In addition, she was third among freshmen in helpers per game. Melson set a career-high with 10 assists in an 86-60 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette. DOUBLE TROUBLE In a convincing 86-60 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette in the second game of the season, both Ole Miss starting guards Shantell Black and Kayla Melson registered 10 assists apiece. It was only the third time in school history that two Rebels had recorded double digit assists in the same game. Sandra Wells and Glenda Springfield were the first two to accomplish the feat as they finished with 13 and 11 assists respectively against Mississippi State March 4, 1978. Shawn Goff led the SEC in blocked shots during the regular season and set the single season school record with 67 rejections during the 2007-08 season. 74 2008-09 LADY REBEL BASKETBALL SEASON NOTES Prior to Black and Melson’s performance on November 18, Kim Bullard and Alisa Scott had done it most recently. Bullard totaled 11 assists and Scott collected 10 in a victory over Vanderbilt February 1, 1986. WATCH YOUR BACK Renee Ladner’s style of “pressure basketball” once again produced one of the league’s top teams in the steals department. After leading the SEC in steals in 2006-07, the Rebels were once again among the league leaders in thefts in 2007-08. Ole Miss finished the season ranked sixth in the SEC in steals as the Rebels collected just under 10 (9.69) thefts per game. Shantell Black also ranked sixth in the SEC in steals as she piled up 2.28 per game and ended the year with 66 to her credit. Fellow guard Kayla Melson capped her season with a total of 51 steals to finish second on the team. GILLOM TROPHY YEAR ONE The Ole Miss women’s basketball team was well represented in the inaugural year for the Cellular South Gillom Trophy. The Cellular South Gillom Trophy, which is presented each year to Mississippi's best collegiate women's basketball player, is named in Ole Miss Associated Head Coach Peggie Gillom’s honor. Part of the Cellular South Outstanding Player Award Series, the first trophy was presented Mar. 31, 2008 in Tupelo, Miss. Media voters from across Mississippi determine the three finalists and the eventual winner. Bianca Thomas was the Rebels’ top free throw shooter in 2007-08 as she finished the season with a 76.9 shooting percentage from the charity stripe. At one point during the season, Thomas connected on 21 consecutive free throws. Rebel Shawn Goff was selected as one of the top three finalists for the award last season and is once again one of the top candidates for the award in 2008-09. NOTHING BUT NET Rebel sophomore guard Bianca Thomas was nothing short of automatic from the free throw line in the second half of the 2007-08 season. Over the final 13 games of the season, Thomas shot 96.3 percent from the charity stripe and only missed one free throw during the time frame. Thomas sunk 24 of her final 25 free throws, including a stretch where she connected on 21 consecutive free throws. CRASHING THE BOARDS The Rebels were one of the SEC’s top offensive rebounding teams in 2007-08. In fact, Ole Miss ranked fourth in the conference with 14.76 offensive boards per game. Shawn Goff paced the team and ranked eighth in the conference with 2.79 offensive rebounds per game, while graduating senior Carla Bartee was 13th in the SEC with 2.59 per game. Overall, Ole Miss had more offensive rebounds than its opponent in 15 of its 29 games last season. During conference play, the Rebels recorded 12 offensive rebounds of more in 12 of the 14 league games. HOME COOKING Elizabeth Robertson was one of two Rebels to earn a spot on the SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll. Robertson is an excercise science major. Ole Miss did an outstanding job last season in protecting its home court as the Rebels finished with a 10-3 record inside Tad Smith Coliseum. In those 13 games at the Tad Pad, Ole Miss outscored its opponents by a total of 7.8 points. INJURY BUG HAUNTS OLE MISS With two players lost for the season due to injury, the Rebels found themselves in a hole early and often in the 2007-08 season. Freshman center Kayla Holloway was lost for the year as she took a medical redshirt, while sophomore standout Alliesha Easley suffered a seasonending injury in the season opening game at Nebraska. ACADEMIC HONORS A pair of Rebels, Bianca Thomas and Elizabeth Robertson, found themselves on the SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll for their outstanding efforts in the classroom. A total of 367 student-athletes were named to the honor roll by SEC Commissioner Mike Slive. The 2007-08 SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2007 Spring, Summer and Fall terms. To be named to the list, a varsity student-athlete must have a 3.0 GPA or higher for either the preceding academic year or cumulatively. A TOTAL TEAM EFFORT Following several generous acts in the community, the entire Ole Miss women’s basketball team was selected to the SEC Community Service Team in 2007-08. The Rebels spent a weekend on the Mississippi Gulf Coast last September to help a community still recovering from Hurricane Katrina. On that trip, the team helped an elderly couple repair their house that still needed repairs following the storm. In addition, the Rebels helped the Ocean Springs, Miss., public library prepare for its grand re-opening by shelving books, installing computers and helping with general maintenance. 2008-09 OLE MISS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 75 2007-08 RESULTS 2007-08 OLE MISS REBEL RESULTS Overall: 13-16 SEC: 6-8 Home: 10-3 Neutral: 1-3 DATE ATTENDANCE 11/11/07 OPPONENT RESULT W-L SEC HIGH SCORER HIGH REBOUNDER at Nebraska L, 59-80 0-1 — (11) BARTEE, Carla 2035 11/18/07 LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE W, 86-60 1-1 — (13) EASLEY, Alliesha (13) BARTEE, Carla (23) GOFF, Shawn 825 11/20/07 ALABAMA A&M W, 73-57 2-1 — 708 11/23/07 11/29/07 12/02/07 12/10/07 12/13/07 12/15/07 12/21/07 12/29/07 12/30/07 01/03/08 01/10/08 01/13/08 01/20/08 vs. Wisconsin% UAB at Ohio State ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF at Penn State at Miami (Fla.)
