Recreational fishing rule changes - PIRSA 1 HOME » FISHING » RECREATIONAL FISHING » RECREATIONAL FISHING RULE CHANGES RECREATIONAL FISHING RULE CHANGES On 1 December 2016, South Australian fishing rules for 26 species changed. The new rules followed a State Government review of recreational fishing in South Australia in early 2016, which included a review of the current size, bag and boat limits and management arrangements for some of the state’s most popular species. With more than 277,000 men, women and children engaging in recreational fishing in South Australia each year and to ensure there are enough fish for the future, limits are set on the number and size of fish that can be taken. New fishing rules From 1 December 2016, the following new rules apply to the 26 species below. During this time, the take, targeting, and possession of King George Whiting by all fishing sectors (recreational, charter and commercial) is prohibited in the closure area. The first King George Whiting spawning spatial closure will commence 1 May 2017. These arrangements were introduced to improve the stock status of King George Whiting and manage the catch within each sectors allocated share. King George Whiting stocks in the Spencer Gulf and Gulf St Vincent / Kangaroo Island regions are currently classified as ‘transitional-depleting’.
