Seward Sea Life Center Field Trip - Mat

Seward Sea Life Center Field Trip
Our fifth grade students at Knik Elementary will be taking a field trip to the Seward Sea Life
Center in April. We will be touring the Sea Life Center and participating in educational
programs on Bioluminescence and Cephalopods taught by Sea Life Center Staff. This will be
an overnight field trip that will include a 1.3 mile hike to Exit Glacier on the second day.
This is a wonderful educational opportunity for our students. The cost of the program would
normally be $95 per student. However, with the help of fundraising and Title 1 grant funds we
are able to offer this opportunity to our fifth graders for a reduced cost of $40 per student. If
this cost will keep your child from participating, please contact Nurse Ann Knobbe or
Administrative Secretary Terri Rice at 352-0300. Scholarships may be available.
Buses will be leaving Knik at 10am. Students will return to Knik at 5:00 pm the following
day. Students will need to be picked up by their family no later than 5:10pm. Students will
need to bring a sack lunch in a disposable bag. (If your child needs a lunch provided by the
school lunch program please let the homeroom teacher know before April 1st.)

Frequently Asked Questions
What meals are provided? Students will need to bring a sack lunch on the first day. Dinner and the
following morning’s breakfast will be provided at the Sea Life Center (menu included in
itinerary). Lunch the second day will be provided by the school. Students may bring personal
snacks if they want. However, they will only be able to eat them at appropriate times and
locations, as directed by the homeroom teachers and Sea Life Center staff. Food must be stored
in a designated area at the Sea Life Center, so student’s personal snacks should be labeled clearly
with their name.
Can I bring my electronics? This field trip is considered an extension of the instructional day.
Therefore, the electronic policy, as is stated in the Student Handbook (located at the front of your
child’s planner) will be followed and enforced. Electronics will only be allowed during nonacademic times at the discretion of the homeroom teachers. Knik Elementary and its teachers
are not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen electronics on this trip. It is recommended
that you leave them at home if this is a concern.
Do I need any extra money? Students will have a limited opportunity to view the Gift Shop at the
Seward Sea Life Center on the second day. If your child would like to purchase a souvenir, they
may bring additional money. Please review your guidelines for your child to keep their money
safe. Teachers are not responsible for lost or stolen money.
What do I need to bring? See the attached packing list, provided by the Sea Life Center and please
include appropriate rain/hiking gear for the second day’s hike to Exit Glacier.
How will students get to Seward? District policy is that students are transported to school-sponsored
events on District transportation. All students attending this field trip must ride on the provided
school bus to Seward. Parents/chaperones may sign out their student after the field trip and
transport their student home if they choose to do so.
What about chaperones? We will need two chaperones from each homeroom class to ride the bus with
the students and stay overnight at the Sea Life Center. No siblings are allowed on the field trip. If
you are interested in chaperoning, please indicate this on the bottom of the permission slip or
contact your child’s teacher. The number of chaperones at the Sea Life Center is limited. We
will contact parent volunteers by April 1st to let them know if they are needed as a chaperone.
