“Muhlenberg has produced
Fulbright Fellows and Udall
Scholars, but it also ensures
that every student excels
at his or her own pace.
‘The students and staff at
Muhlenberg are what continues to make me reluctant
to leave and excited to
return,’ a student says. ‘The
warm and friendly feeling
on campus makes me feel

Active Learning
Many of Muhlenberg’s classes are taught seminar style, with an emphasis on
discussion and classroom interaction. Science labs are hands-on, with the opportunity to do real science in a small college setting. Independent study, mentored
research, internships and field experience all are encouraged. The goal is to promote an active, participatory learning style.
That commitment to first-rate teaching and active learning means that
Muhlenberg strives always to provide learning experiences that are not simply
informational, but interesting, even inspirational. It means looking for teaching
approaches where students are not passive but rather engaged, active learners. The
result has been an academic program widely recognized for educational excellence
based on both rigor and nurture.
Positive Outcomes
A Muhlenberg education provides a powerful launching pad into graduate
school and entry level careers. The College’s success rates with both law school
and medical school placement are regularly over 90%. In addition, many Muhlenberg students go on to master’s and doctoral programs each year, often with
teaching fellowships or other stipends.
Muhlenberg grads also go on to a full range of employment opportunities, from
America’s largest banks and accounting firms to its “blue chip” business concerns,
from the most prominent social and helping agencies to schools, government and
family-owned businesses, and from a variety of media, writing and advertising
positions to work in the performing and fine arts.

PEYTON R. HELM
KAREN GREEN
SAM BEIDLEMAN
President of the College
Vice President for Student Affairs/
Dean of Students
Director of Athletics
Peyton Randolph Helm
took office as president of
Muhlenberg College July 1,
2003. He holds the faculty
rank of professor of history.
Immediately prior to joining the Muhlenberg community, Helm served as vice president
for college relations and professor of classical
studies at Colby College in Waterville, Maine.
Helm began his career in academic administration at the University of Pennsylvania,
where he was named coordinator of College
House Programs in 1981. He served as associate director of development and then director
of development for Penn’s School of Arts and
Sciences. From 1981-1988 he was also an
adjunct assistant professor of ancient history
and urban studies at Penn.
In 1988, Helm was named vice president for
development and alumni relations at Colby,
where he was promoted to vice president for
college relations in 2001.
The Council for Advancement and Support
of Education (CASE) has awarded Helm its
Steuben Apple, given to advancement professionals who have been rated as a top speaker
at 10 or more national conferences. Helm has
delivered addresses and conducted seminars on
ethics, stewardship, writing, capital campaigns,
market research and volunteer management at
more than 30 conferences across the country
and internationally. His writing has been published in CASE Currents and Successful Fund
Raising, as well as various scholarly publications in the field of ancient history.
Helm earned his bachelor’s degree in archaeology, with magna cum laude and Phi Beta
Kappa distinction, from Yale University. He
earned his doctoral degree in ancient history,
specializing in ancient Greek and Near Eastern
history and literature, from the University of
Pennsylvania.
Karen Green began her duties
as vice president for student affairs/dean of students at Muhlenberg College on June 15, 2006,
following more than four years as
dean of students at Wells College in Aurora, N.Y.
At Muhlenberg, Green oversees more than 70 fulltime employees and several departments, including
athletics and recreation.
“Muhlenberg is committed to our scholar athletes
and the athletic programs are an integral part of
a liberal arts education,” said Green. “The lessons
learned from participation in our programs will
sustain our students throughout their lives. The
opportunity to be involved in intramural and recreational programs provides balance from the rigors of
a challenging academic experience. Students learn
negotiation skills, teamwork, time management and
to be effective leaders.
“Our coaches are committed to excellence and
are partners with students notwithstanding their
skill level. My predecessor as dean of students, Rudy
Ehrenberg, said it best, ‘We must provide our students with outstanding coaches, superb facilities and
a commitment to excellent programs. These are the
ingredients for a quality program and Muhlenberg
College is committed to such excellence.’ I strongly
support these words and will be fully committed to
the College’s athletic programs.”
Green received her baccalaureate degree from
Agnes Scott College in Atlanta in 1986, where the
Karen Green Human Relations Award was created in
her honor. She went on to earn her master’s of divinity from the Candler School of Theology at Emory
University in 1997.
Green began her administrative career as a resident director at Spelman College, later served in the
admissions office at Agnes Scott and subsequently
became director of orientation, residence life and
student activities at her alma mater before leaving
Atlanta to accept the position of director of multicultural affairs at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y.
She held additional leadership positions in
student life at Agnes Scott, Emory and Hamilton
before assuming the position of dean of students at
Wells in September 2001.

Following a national search,
Muhlenberg College named Sam
Beidleman director of athletics in
July 2003. He had been serving
as interim director of athletics
since April 1, 2003.
As director of athletics, Beidleman supervises Muhlenberg’s 22-sport varsity intercollegiate
program, as well as the intramural and recreation
programs.
“Muhlenberg College is proud of its long-standing
tradition of academic and athletic excellence,” said
Beidleman. “While we strive to win on the field or
court, we measure our success in many other ways
including the development of character, leadership,
scholarship and ethical behavior.”
Beidleman returned to Muhlenberg after a prior
35-year association with the College, during which
he held responsibilities in every area of athletics
programming – as a student, coach, faculty member
and administrator. He was a varsity letterwinner in
football and track and spent 13 seasons as an assistant
football coach following his graduation in 1963.
It was as a baseball coach that Beidleman truly
made his mark, coaching the Mules from 1970
to 1992 and winning 255 games, setting a school
record for a coach in one sport. His teams captured
five Middle Atlantic Conference Southwest League
titles and three Southern Division championships.
Beidleman, who held the academic rank of associate professor of physical education from 1965 to
1992, also served as men’s intramural director and
director of recreation. After retiring from coaching, he was full-time athletic business and facilities
manager until August 2000.
A 2006 inductee into the Muhlenberg Athletic
Hall of Fame, Beidleman earned his master’s degree
in counseling and guidance from Kutztown University in 1970.

centennial conference
In its 19th year of all-sports competition, the Centennial Conference
has taken its place among the nation’s elite small college conferences.
On June 4, 1981, Keith Spalding, then-president of Franklin & Marshall College, made the announcement that “eight private colleges found it
timely and appropriate to form a round-robin schedule among institutions with similar attitudes and practices in intercollegiate football.” With
that statement, the Centennial Conference was
born.
From 1983-92, the eight private
colleges — Dickinson College,
Franklin & Marshall College, Gettysburg College, Johns Hopkins
University, Muhlenberg College,
Swarthmore College, Ursinus College
and Western Maryland College (now
McDaniel College) — participated in a
football-only conference. Because of the
success in operating the Centennial Football
Conference, the league expanded to an all-sports conference in 1992, with
Bryn Mawr College, Haverford College and Washington College joining
as charter members.
A purpose and mission statement adopted by the presidents stated,
“Recognizing that our fundamental purpose is the academic mission of
institutions, we agree to establish an all-sports conference in the spirit of
rationalizing our competition by controlling travel, schedule and costs.
The Conference will be controlled by the presidents of the member institutions.”
The Centennial Conference encourages athletic competition among
national liberal arts colleges and universities that share similar academic
aspirations and a commitment to the importance of the total educational
experience of students engaged in sports. Intercollegiate athletics programs
are an integral part of the life of the member institutions and flow from
their educational objectives. Each institution provides a comprehensive,
broad-based athletics program. All varsity sports are treated equitably, and
every sport is important.

Renovated 2003-04
A three-level, 40,000-square-foot addition to the Life Sports Center opened
in August 2004, further improving Muhlenberg College’s athletic facilities.
The addition, built directly west of the John Deitrich Field House, includes a
large weight facility, an expanded cardio-fitness area, a snack bar, new facilities
for health service and counseling, training rooms, locker rooms and coaches’
offices. The structure overlooks Scotty Wood Stadium and Varsity Field and is
joined to the Life Sports Center by a large indoor corridor on the main level. A
new main entrance faces the campus.
The project also entailed renovations in the Field House, including installation of a new floor and track, new netting, new lighting and painting.

Travel
Log
The Muhlenberg men’s basketball team has taken many special trips, both during the season and over the summer, the last 20 years.
Proceeds from the Scotty Wood Tournament help pay for these trips and enable the team members to travel cross-country and out of the
country for once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
On the international trips, permitted every three years by NCAA regulations, the Mules combine their sightseeing and cultural exchange
with several games against club teams.
Below is a list of special basketball team trips made by the Muhlenberg men’s basketball team. Pictures from the trips in bold are arranged
clockwise, starting from the upper left.
“This has been such a positive experience by
not only giving us the opportunity to play basketball in Ireland together, but for us to spend
time and mature together with each other and

COMMUNITY SERVICE
The Muhlenberg men’s basketball players recognize their status as
role models to the youth in the area and take every opportunity to
give back to the community that supports them.
The last two years, the Mules went back to school for a day in
January, reading to children at Jefferson Elementary School in conjunction with Martin Luther
King, Jr. Day of Service.
The Mules talked with
the youngsters about the
importance of reading
and helped them draw
pictures of their hopes
and dreams.

SCOTT MCCLARY
Head Coach
Muhlenberg ‘94
third season
After 11 years, Scott McClary returned to Muhlenberg
College as the school’s new
head men’s basketball coach for
the 2009-10 season.
McClary replaced Dave Madeira, who retired
following the conclusion of the 2008-09 season.
Madeira coached at Muhlenberg for 22 years,
and for seven of those McClary was one of his assistants. A 1994 graduate of Muhlenberg, McClary
spent three years as a student assistant coach and
four years as the top assistant, helping lead the
Mules to Centennial Conference championships in
1995 and 1998.
“It has always been a dream of mine to return
home to my alma mater and help the program
reach its full potential,” said McClary. “I cannot
imagine a better place to spend the next 20 years of
my life raising my family and building a championship level program. I am prepared to build a
program that will develop great people and field a
team the College and the entire community will be
proud to have represent Muhlenberg.”
McClary inherited a senior-laden team and
led it to a Centennial Conference playoff berth
and the program’s first postseason road win in
nine years in 2009-10. With a younger team in
2010-11, the Mules finished 13-12 in a campaign
highlighted by individual school records for points
and blocked shots in a season and the program’s
first first-team Academic All-American in 30 years.
McClary came back to Muhlenberg after six
years as head coach at Marymount University,
where he compiled a 74-83 record, including winning records the last three seasons. In 2009, he was
named Capital Athletic Conference coach of the
year after leading the Saints to nine wins in their
last 13 games and a run to the CAC championship
game.
McClary brought his Marymount teams to
Muhlenberg to play in the Scotty Wood Tournament twice, winning the championship in 2004
and losing to Muhlenberg in the 2008 title game.
Prior to coaching at Marymount, McClary was
the top assistant under Pete Strickland at Coastal
Carolina University. Before that, McClary spent
three seasons at Bishop O’Connell High School,
helping Joe Wootten turn around a program from
winning six games to winning 30, including a
Virginia state title in his final season.
Perhaps the strongest influence upon McClary
as a coach comes from working with Hall of Fame
Coach Morgan Wootten of DeMatha High School.
Spending the 1998-99 season on DeMatha’s bench
as a varsity assistant, McClary helped coach a team
that was ranked No. 1 in the nation and featured
future NBA players Keith Bogans and Joe Forte.
He has also spent the past 20 summers helping
Wootten with his renowned summer camp, serving
as league commissioner for 13 years.
McClary is the 23rd men’s basketball coach in
Muhlenberg history, but just the fourth in almost
a half-century. Ken Moyer coached from 1960-61
through 1980-81, when he was replaced by Steve
Moore, who led the Mules for six seasons before
handing the reins over to Madeira.
The 39-year-old McClary and his wife Nancy
have three sons, Caden (9), Riley (5) and Parker
(3).

Basketball
History
Combining a proud past with an exciting present and future, Muhlenberg College has
a men’s basketball tradition rare among schools of its kind.
In 104 years of competition dating back to 1900, the Mules have compiled a record of
1174-1050-1 (.528). Muhlenberg recently joined the select group of Division III schools
that have won 1,100 games.
The men’s basketball program set a school record for all sports by reaching double
digits in victories for 21 straight seasons from 1939 through 1959 and tied that mark
from 1983 to 2003.
Mules Among the Giants (1940s)
Muhlenberg exploded onto the national basketball scene in the mid-1940s. When
the College was selected as a school to be used for the training of Naval officers, dozens
of outstanding athletes came to Allentown. Under the guidance of Hall-of-Famer Al
“Doggie” Julian, the Mules made two consecutive appearances in the National Invitation
Tournament, which at the time was the top postseason college basketball tournament.
After winning 19 of 24 regular-season games in 1943-44, Muhlenberg traveled to
New York’s Madison Square Garden to join seven other teams in the NIT. Unfortunately, Muhlenberg’s first-round opponent was DePaul, led by 6-foot-9 All-American George
Mikan. According to the Muhlenberg yearbook, Mikan scored 29 points and knocked at least 20 Mule shots out of the basket (in those days
before goaltending) to lead DePaul to a 68-45 win. The following season, Muhlenberg battled heavily
favored St. John’s in its first-round NIT game, but lost by one point.
In 1945-46, under interim coach Lee Coker, Muhlenberg made a third NIT appearance and finished
fourth after defeating Syracuse, 47-41, in the first round. The Mules never appeared in the NIT again,
but their success continued. They won four consecutive Middle Atlantic Conference North championships before the end of the decade.
High-Scoring Hijinks (1960s)
Muhlenberg moved to Division III in the early 1960s and returned to national prominence later that
decade, winning three straight MAC South championships from 1968 to 1970 and earning a bid to the
NCAA College Division Tournament in 1968.
The Mule teams of those years were known for their fast-paced style, averaging more than 84 points
per game three years in a row. The 1969 squad set a school record by topping the 100-point mark in
three straight games. Three of the six leading scorers in team history played during that span, including
all-time leader Bob McClure (left), who scored 1,788 points and was named MAC South player of the
year twice.
Sensational in the Centennial (1990s)
The Muhlenberg program was rejuvenated in the early 1980s and has remained strong ever since. The
Mules won or tied for the East Division title in each of their first three years in the Centennial Conference. In 1995, Muhlenberg toppled undefeated and top-ranked Franklin & Marshall in the Conference title game to earn a spot in the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Mules won
their second CC title in 1998, defeating Johns Hopkins in the final.
Immortals
Muhlenberg’s contribution to the sport of basketball is recognized at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in
Springfield, Mass., where two of its former coaches — Julian and
Bennie Borgmann — are enshrined.
Julian left Muhlenberg for Holy Cross and coached the
Crusaders to the 1947 NCAA Championship, then spent two
years as head coach of the Boston Celtics before returning to the
college ranks at Dartmouth. He would later serve as president of
the American Association of College Basketball Coaches.
Borgmann played nearly 3,000 professional games for teams
such as the Kingston Colonels, Fort Wayne Hoosiers, Chicago
Bruins, Original Celtics, Brooklyn Amercians and Newark Mules
before coming to Muhlenberg. An All-Pro forward wherever he
played, Borgmann frequently tallied 10 or more points at a time
when most teams would rarely score 30 points in a game.
