F07D 04 (GEN13) Synthesise new knowledge into the development of your own practice About this Unit The Unit covers your role in incorporating and embedding new knowledge into practice. The new knowledge may come from reflecting on and evaluating your own practice or from finding out about and utilising the developments made by others. This Unit is intended to support good practice in action research and the development of evidence-based practice. The Unit applies to all workers in the health and social care sector who are accountable for their own actions and responsible for their own development. This includes registered and unregistered staff. Scope The scope is here to give you guidance on possible areas to be covered in this Unit. The terms in this section give you a list of options linked with items in the performance criteria. You need to provide evidence for any option related to your work area. Identify - this may be through: self evaluation discussion with colleagues and friends educational experiences Information about advances in knowledge and practice may be gained formally or informally from: books and research reports professional and trade journals learning programmes, observation discussion and presentations Opportunities include: debates discussions and conferences publications collaboration and consultation Others includes: service users carers colleagues and practitioners Unit: F07D 04 (GEN13) Synthesise new knowledge into the development of your own practice 1 F07D 04 (GEN13) Synthesise new knowledge into the development of your own practice Specific Evidence Requirements for this Unit Simulation: Simulation is NOT permitted for any part of this unit. The following forms of evidence are mandatory: Direct observation: Your assessor/expert witness must observe you in real work activities, which provide evidence for a significant number of the performance criteria for this unit. This may be from other activities where you have utilized developments from others and evaluated your practice Reflective accounts/professional discussion: This will include thinking about how you can build effectively on your own work to support good practice in action research and the development of evidence-based practice. You might also build on ideas for improvement identified through appraisals and identify any available training courses, research by others Competence of performance and knowledge could also be demonstrated using a variety of evidence from the following: Questioning: may be used to provide evidence of knowledge, legislation, policies and procedures, which cannot be fully evidenced through direct observation or reflective accounts. In addition the assessor/expert witness may also ask questions to clarify aspects of your practice. Witness testimony: can be a confirmation or authentication of the activities described in your evidence that your assessor has not seen. This could be a your line manager Work Products: These can be any records that you would normally use within your normal role NB Confidential records are not required to be in your portfolio, they can remain where they are normally stored and checked by your assessors and verifier. If they are included they must be made anonymous APL/Assignment/Project: This is not appropriate for this unit General guidance Prior to commencing this Unit you should agree and complete an assessment plan with your assessor which details the assessment methods you will be using, and the tasks you will be undertaking to demonstrate your competence. Evidence must be provided for ALL of the performance criteria ALL of the knowledge and the parts of the scope that are relevant to your job role. The evidence must reflect the policies and procedures of your workplace and be linked to current legislation, values and the principles of best practice within Health Settings. This will include the National Service Standards and/or KSF for your areas of work and the individuals you care for. All evidence must relate to your own work practice. This specification details the knowledge and understanding required to carry out competent practice in the performance described in this Unit. When using this specification it is important to read the knowledge requirements in relation to expectations and requirements of your job role. You need to provide evidence for ALL knowledge points listed below. There are a variety of ways this can be achieved so it is essential that you read the ‘knowledge evidence’ section of the Assessment Guidance. You need to show that you know, understand and can apply in practice: Legislation, policy and good practice 1. A working understanding of the purposes of linking into others’ research and the benefits which might accrue Care and Support of the Individual 6. A factual awareness of the networks and support systems which may be available and the nature of the support they may give 7. A factual awareness of the advantages of different networks and support systems for different people and situations and why they may be of particular importance in crisis situations 8. A factual awareness of the range of sources available in your own area of practice and how this compares with other practitioner groups Procedures and techniques 9. A working understanding of the factors which affect health and social well-being and the ones of particular importance in your own situation 10. A working understanding of the role of development programmes in learning more about yourself and the use which can be made of these 11. A factual awareness of the meaning of the term ‘learning styles’ and your own learning style 12. A factual awareness of opportunities there may be for evaluating and challenging others’ work and developments 13. A factual awareness of how it is possible to balance the need to keep up-to-date with advances whilst meeting current deadlines and personal responsibilities 20. A working understanding of how to provide constructive challenges which focus on the work and not on the person who did it 21. A working understanding of strategies and methods for evaluating others’ work and its relevance to your own area of practice 22. A working understanding of how you can evaluate realistically the outcomes of your own action research 23.
