SVDP
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a lay, volunteer, Catholic
non-profit organization that has been serving people in need
around the world since 1833 and in the United States since 1845.
The Society provides compassionate support regardless of race,
origin, religion or gender. Vincentians visit the disadvantaged in
their homes, establishing a charitable relationship to better address
their needs whether financial, spiritual or emotional.
In 2012 The Society of St Vincent de Paul’s National Council, in
collaboration with aha! Process, initiated a vision to “End Poverty
Through Systemic Change”. In cooperation with that vision the
SVdP Rockford Council developed ‘Hope Takes Action’, incorporating
‘Bridges Out of Poverty’ education for the community and
‘Getting Ahead in a Just Gettin’ by World’ workshops for those
suffering poverty.

OUR MISSION
“Empower individuals in poverty
to transition to self-sufficiency with
community support.”
Hope Takes Action, initiated by the Society of St. Vincent de
Paul, seeks to provide community awareness that poverty is not
always the choice of those suffering from it but rather a failure
of systems in general and the need to change those systems.
The program promotes collaboration and engagement from
everyone in the community; individuals, social service agencies,
professional organizations, businesses and government.
BRIDGES OUT OF POVERTY
Community Education
Employing educational workshops and a mentoring program,
people experiencing poverty are given hope, guidance and
support to develop and implement a personal plan to transition
to self‐sufficiency and contribute to the community.
The Bridges Out of Poverty endeavor utilizes constructs based on the work of Dr. Ruby Payne, A Framework for
Understanding Poverty and Bridges Out of Poverty, Strategies for Professionals and Communities. Bridges provides
insights to the daily challenges faced by individuals experiencing poverty and the barriers they encounter when trying
to succeed. Bridges teaches how caring communities can create pathways out of poverty through cooperative efforts.

Individuals, agencies and organizations are invited to attend and learn how a gap exists between the desire someone
has for change and their ability to create change. Please consider attending a Bridges Out of Poverty seminar and
explore the many opportunities available to contribute to the success of those struggling to transition out of poverty.
