Media Release For immediate release BOUCHARD FINLAYSON’S HANNIBAL AN INNOVATIVE RED BLEND THAT PUSHES THE BOUNDARIES OF WINEMAKING Visitors to the Cape Wine Show from 15 – 17 September 2015 will find Bouchard Finlayson on stand H85, where they can enter daily competitions to win prizes; and also represented at the Hemel-en-Aarde Winegrowers’ Association stand O104. Bouchard Finlayson winemaker Peter Finlayson continuously pushes the boundaries of South African wines, from his legendary Pinot Noir to his unique Italian/French red blend, Hannibal – a highly sought-after wine that tends to sell out quickly whenever a new vintage is released. Hannibal stands alone by its design and presentation as an individualistic blend of classic Italian and French varieties. Its name was adopted as a symbolic expression of this synergy, with the African elephant participating in linking the wine lands of France and Italy 2000 years ago under the invading command of the classic Carthaginian general. The birth of Hannibal extends back in time to Bouchard Finlayson’s importation of the first Sangiovese and Nebbiolo plant material into South Africa in 1989. These imports experienced 12 years in the development process, from cuttings and expansion of plant material, to the final realisation of the first bottled wine, released in December 2001. Hannibal is recognised and respected for its commanding taste profile, described by Finlayson as ‘a symphony of flavours’. The innovative blend keeps winning awards on a global scale, from the Decanter World Wine Awards in London to the China Wine and Spirits Awards, and what Finlayson describes as the ‘annual wine Olympiad for new world wines’ – the Six Nations Wine Challenge in Australia. Back on home turf Hannibal continuously receives the highest honours in the Platter’s South African Wine Guide and at the South African Wine Index (SAWi) Awards. Finlayson states that the current 2013 vintage, which has a composition of 52% Sangiovese, 17% Pinot Noir, 15% Nebbiolo, 8% Mourvedre, 6% Shiraz and 2% Barbera, is ‘potentially one of the best productions of Hannibal we have ever had.’ He adds that its taste profile is ‘superbly smooth, with lots of leather ending in a harmonious creamy finish’. Hannibal 2013 is available from the vineyard Cellar Door at R245 per bottle, and can also be purchased at select wine shops (please note that wine shop prices may differ).
