Utrecht University, Educate-it Voting tool uses There are many reasons you might choose to use voting tools. These include testing your students’ knowledge, surveying their opinions, or having them evaluate your course. They give teachers a much better idea of how much knowledge their students have acquired. What’s more, it shows your students what they (don’t) know (yet) and allows them to see how their abilities measure up against those of their peers. What follows is a diagram listing the various possible applications, with examples. As you review these, bear in mind that the listed objectives can apply to both student and teacher! If you’d like to exchange ideas about what would work in your teaching, contact us! 3 Voting Tools Teacher Manual Topic Utrecht University, Educate-it Objective Knowledge Previous knowledge Application in class Start Determining initial knowledge (and any gaps Middle Example End x Knowledge question about previously taught therein) subject matter; answer required to understand Knowledge refresher, triggering memory lecture Equalising knowledge level across group Reproduction Testing recently acquired knowledge x x Knowledge question Application Testing ability to apply recently acquired x x Case x x x (Controversial) statement x x knowledge Opinions On content Wishes Insight into student opinions Incite discussion Insight into reasoning Taking stock of student preferences Question about possible topics (answers re: content/topics in classroom sessions Evaluation immediately used in class) Taking stock of student preferences x re: content/topics in future classroom sessions Collecting feedback on the quality of Question about possible topics Evaluation questions (answers will be used to improve teaching for future groups) instruction provided 4 Voting Tools Teacher Manual 2. Utrecht University, Educate-it So much choice! There are a lot of tools in the market and it can be hard to see the forest for the trees. Educate-it is here to help! We’re currently running pilots on 3 tools: PresentersWall, Shakespeak, and Mentimeter. They each have their own features. You can find all of them in the diagram on the next page. It also presents three other tools that, though they are currently in use around UU, we do not support. Would you like personal advice? Contact us. 2.1 Different question types Shakespeak, PresentersWall, and Mentimeter differ in the kinds of questions they support: PresentersWall Yes/No question: Useful in combination with a (controversial) statement. Multiple choice: A multiple-choice question for polling, since there is no way to indicate which is the correct answer. For that, you should select a quiz question. Quiz question: A multiple-choice question with a single correct answer. 1 to 10: The student selects a rating on a scale of one to ten Example: how would you rate this meeting? Free text field: An open question. Configurable as a tag cloud (if the answers are short) or as ‘cards’. Likert (Totally disagree / Totally agree): Indicate your level of agreement with a given statement on a 5-point scale. Order question: This is a drag-and-drop question. It’s a good way to clarify and visualise student preferences. Multiple choice with multiple answers: Some-of-many. These questions allow for the selection of multiple answer options. Please note that there is no way to define which answer options are ‘correct’. Shakespeak Choice of Vote slide or Message slide. A Message slide (open question) shows a maximum of 8 answers at once. A Vote slide (multiple-choice question) allows for one answer or multiple answers to be marked as correct. Mentimeter Multiple choice: The audience selects one or more answers. Word cloud: A cloud of answers in which the popular answers are presented in a bigger font. Quiz: Assigns candidates scores based on their answers and response times. Scales: Have the audience rate statements on a scale. Open ended: Open question. 100 Points: Each candidate has 100 points to distribute across multiple items. 2 by 2 matrix: Have the audience place items along two axes. Who will win?: A multiple-choice question that only shows the winner, not the scores. 5 Voting Tools Teacher Manual Type Question types See reverse for description of the voting tool question types supported by Educate-it.
