Shepard, Snelling, Welch and White www.leg.state.vt.us Whereas, during West Barnet native and University of Vermont (UVM) junior Taylor Coppenrath’s first two seasons as a men’s basketball Catamount, his impressive statistics prompted the America East Conference (AEC) to award him its most coveted forms of recognition, namely rookie of the year honors in 2002 along with a slot on the second all-conference team, and, in 2003, the Kevin Roberson America East Men’s Basketball Player of the Year Award and the lead spot on the first all-conference team, and Whereas, topping these laudable accomplishments seems nearly impossible as only twice in the AEC’s quarter century of men’s basketball competition had an AEC school’s team member been selected player of the year for two consecutive seasons, and Whereas, not one to believe the odds disfavored his repeating last season’s accomplishments, Taylor Coppenrath proved to everyone that he is a basketball player of historic stature, and Whereas, this season, he was the nation’s fifth leading collegiate basketball scorer, the AEC’s leading per-game scorer at 23.8 points which is the third best in UVM hoop history, possessor of the conference’s highest field goal success rate at 51.4 percent, and ranked fourth in rebounds averaging 7.2 per game, and Whereas, Taylor Coppenrath’s 1,610 career points as of the 2003-2004 regular season’s conclusion is already the fourth best, and his single-season 524 point tally ranks ninth, in the annals of Catamount basketball, and Whereas, the first indication that his 2003-2004 season of consistently fine basketball play might once again grab top conference honors occurred when he repeated as the lead player on the AEC’s allconference first team, and Whereas, his efforts were duly rewarded when for the second consecutive season, Taylor Coppenrath was named winner of the Kevin Roberson America East Men’s Basketball Player of the Year Award, and Whereas, this accomplishment is especially noteworthy because even though he was sidelined for the last five games of the regular season on account of a wrist injury, Taylor Coppenrath was nonetheless judged the conference’s top men’s basketball player for the 2003-2004 season, and Whereas, he rebounded rapidly from his injury, and in the America East championship game against the University of Maine, which the Catamounts won 72-53, Taylor scored an amazing 43 points, an America East tournament single basketball game scoring record, now therefore be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives: That the General Assembly is pleased to congratulate Taylor Coppenrath on winning the Kevin Roberson America East Men’s Basketball Player of the Year Award for the second consecutive season and for establishing a new America East tournament single basketball game scoring record, and be it further Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Taylor Coppenrath in care of the University of Vermont’s Department of Athletics. ____________________________ Walter E.
