Headteachers: Maxine Gray & Neal Bosworth Wroxall Primary School, Castle Road, Wroxall, Ventnor, Isle of Wight. PO38 3DP Tel. 01983 852290 e-mail: [email protected] Dear Parents, Apologies for the length of this terms letter, feel free to skim read and use the bold subheadings to pull out the information important to you! Wow! This year has just flown by! I cannot believe that the children are in their final term in Poppy class. It has been a pleasure to see them all blossom over this academic year. As we now greet the last term, things are starting to subtly change. This will help the children in the transition to year two. Independence Please help your child to develop their independence by leaving them at the classroom door each morning so they can take out their own books and do their spelling practice. However please do remember that I love to chat! So please pop in if you have any concerns or issues you would like to draw to my attention. PE PE is on a Monday with Mr Woodhouse. We have noticed that a lot of the children do not have a complete PE kit and there are many complaints about plimsoles being too small. It will be sports day in 3 weeks time and we expect all the children to participate and to have the correct PE kit. Show & Tell On Mondays ONLY! Please do not allow them to just bring in a toy…unless it has some educational relevance! Try to encourage them to bring in something that they can talk about or teach or show the class. Like a swimming certificate, or a picture of their pet. Privilege In preparing for year two, I have packed away the ‘Happy Box’ and ‘Shiny Window’ and instead the children will be able to earn a privilege. This is an activity of their choosing as a reward for their improvement in work or for a great achievement. If your child has been awarded a privilege you will know about it as I will send out certificate. The children have suggested that the privilege could be things like, coming into school in home clothes, or being a teacher for 10 minutes, bringing in a pet to show everyone, playing a parachute game, playing on the ipads or having lego out. House points House points are being awarded for academic achievement, the children will be encouraged to spend these in the house point shop at the end of term as these cannot be carried over into next year. Warm Fuzzy Jar The Warm Fuzzy Jar is already half full. The children are told to put a warm fuzzy in the jar when they have been noticed performing a spontaneous act of kindness! Poppy class has some very kind children. Well done everyone! Golden Time Golden time is 5 minutes at the end of each day where the children are allowed to free-play outside as a reward for following the golden rules all day. However if after a warning the golden rules are broken, golden time is replaced with reflection time. If you or your child need reminding of the schools golden rules then have a look in the corridor. I never carry negatives into the next day so the children all start afresh the next day Topic This term our topic is Adventurers. The topic web shows details of what children will be learning through each of the curriculum areas and is available on the Poppy class blog. http://w8.wroxallprimaryschool.co.uk/wp/poppyclass/ Reading Poppy class is full of great readers! Reading at home will have played a crucial part in the children’s success. Hearing your child read just a couple of pages each day will ensure their continued progress. Please write in the reading diary so we can track progress at home as well as in school, and ensure your child’s book is in school every day. Homework Please encourage your child to do their spellings along with their reading, every day. It helps consolidate their learning, shows you their progress and provides them with the mindset to want to extend their own learning. Again, getting ready for year two, the children will be bringing home their spellings on paper, these need to be handed in on Friday. Poppy Poppy the donkey has now been home with every child! To make things fair, she will now go into retirement. Poppy has played an important role in every child’s speaking and listening, so thank you for your support in this activity. Next year the children will be welcoming Sunny the donkey and friend as the class mascots to take home for the weekend. Exciting times! There are so many fun things planned for this term! In school theatre show Sports day Beach day Pier project A class trip to Nature zones Guest music teacher Painting a giant letter for the village green display at the county show Air ambulance talk Transition day – where the children get to see their new classroom and their year two teacher. 30 days wild During June we are trying to take part in as many wild acts as possible! The Wildlife Trust hold a national event whereby people try and undertake at least one nature activity a day. Although we cannot do all 30 because of the weekends, we will plan to do as many as possible. Please take a look at our calendar in the classroom to see what we have been up to! Biscuit, Ginger and Chocolate Please bring in any newspapers you have so we can line the guinea pigs cage. The guinea pigs help the children to develop important Maths skills like weighing out their food and measuring their water. This term the guinea pigs will not be on a reading rota. Instead the guinea pigs will be used in the reading for pleasure sessions where the children choose books from our library to read to them. The guinea pigs love being in the classroom and will often squeak during registration as they know their breakfast is on the way! Biscuit and Chocolate love sitting still and listening to the stories. Ginger on the other hand, rather fancies being a ninja and will happily wiggle away from a story to have an adventure of her own! Hats and Sun cream It was lovely to see all of the beautiful sun hats last term for ‘Wear a hat day’. Please can you ensure that you apply suncream and bring a hat in every day now we are in the summer term. Many thanks, Mrs Polly Smith
