Postaw na Piwo - Kompania Piwowarska’s New Sustainable Development
Strategy
Following 8 years of pursuing the previous Sustainable Development strategy called
“10 Priorities. One Future”, the time has come to make changes. The new areas where KP has
set out its targets now are 5 Shared Imperatives. They focus on initiatives which will better
meet the current needs of the company and local communities, environment and consumers,
and, at the same time, the efforts will be more effective too. The new sustainable development
ambition is called “Postaw na Piwo”.
In the past financial year, Kompania Piwowarska delivered excellent results in the area of corporate
social responsibility, which is confirmed in its latest Sustainable Development Report. It summarizes
the company’s achievements in the previous 10 priorities, with a score of 4.39 in a 5-level scale, which
is the best performance among all breweries in the SABmiller Group.
However, the challenges that the company and society are facing at the moment are getting
bigger.Climate change, resource depletion, water scarcity, alcohol related harm, income inequality and
poverty... all of this created a need for revisiting Kompania Piwowarska’s goals and ambitions in the
area of corporate social responsibility.
“Postaw na Piwo is a vision for the future, which we hope we can use to inspire those around us. We
want to use it to help others – NGOs, communities, business partners and so on – join us and work in
collaboration to deliver our vision,” explains Andrew Highcock, President of Kompania
Piwowarska. When our business does well, so do the local communities, economies and environment
around us,” he adds.
The existing programme is simpler, based around five priority areas named Shared Imperatives. They
are called ‘shared imperatives’ because they are more than priorities – they are critical to the future
success of the company. KP wants to face these challenges and address them through sharing its
local knowledge and collaborating through innovative partnerships with suppliers, governments, NGOs
and many others. KP has set out a programme of action and has committed that by 2020 the
company will be delivering against the targets defined in it.
The five shared imperatives are:
1. Accelerate growth and social development through the company’s value chains
SABMiller will collaborate with farmers, distributors and retailers in its global value chains, by
supporting their own development, the growth of their businesses, families and comunities. The target
which KP wants to achieve by 2020 is to have directly supported 13,500 small enterprises in Poland
by enhancing their business growth and family livelihoods, also going beyond a traditional commercial
relationship. If on average these businesses employ three people, then over 40,000 people will directly
benefit in terms of improved incomes and better livelihoods.
2. Make beer a natural choice for moderate and responsible drinkers
Kompania Piwowarska will endevour to make beer a natural choice for moderate and responsible
drinkers. By 2020, the company aims to reach all of its beer consumers with effective communication
campaigns and partnerships to encourage moderate and responsible beer consumption. In addition,
KP will collaborate with retailers to enforce clear standards of beer retailing and support programmes
to increase road safety awareness, counteract drinking and driving and prevent underage drinking.
The company will build sustainable development messages into the activation of three brands in KP
portfolio.
3. Secure shared water resources for our business and local communities
A rising population is one reason why water is such a important issue. The 2020 targets set by the
company include securing, in collaboration with partners, water suppplies for all the breweries and
reducing, at the same time, the risk shared with the communities. These measures will be supported
by detailed site-by-site water risk assessment. The global SABMiller Group commits to reduce water
usage to 3.0 litres per 1 litre of beer over a 6-year period, but this goal has already been achieved in
KP which uses 2.99 litres of water to produce 1 litre of beer.
4. Create value through reducing our waste and carbon emissions
Kompania Piwowarska is working towards reducing CO2 emissions and waste in its own breweries,
but it also helps its suppliers, customers and local communities to do the same. The target set for the
upcoming years is to reduce CO2 emission by 25% per 1 litre of beer across the company’s whole
value chain (against a 2010 base), and KP wants to achieve the target through buying only
environment-friendly fridges, using renewable sources of energy, reducing the weight of its packs,
promoting returnable containers, upgrading its fleet of trucks and organizing training programmes for
drivers.
5. Support responsible, sustainable use of land for brewing crops
In the upcoming years, the SABMiller Group will work to ensure that the sourcing of its crops
measurably improves both food security and resource productivity. You cannot set a ‘one size fits all’
target for sustainable agriculture. Across its key crops, geography by geography, SABMiller will set
specific targets for yield improvements, irrigation efficiency and carbon reductions.
“We believe business can play a significant role in tackling society’s future challenges. We have our
shared goals and will be able to achieve a lot thanks to a closer collaboration with our partners. We all
want to live in a thriving, sociable, clean and productive world, where nobody faces the risk of water or
food shortages. Therefore our new approach to sustainable development will help us respond to
societal needs more effectively,” says Katarzyna Radecka, Sustainable Development Manager in
Kompania Piwowarska.
