Students will know how to select the proper feed for different animals. Assessment Activity. Introduction and Mental Set Bring in a box of fresh crackers and a box of stale crackers. Allow students to taste. Even though they look the same, they have different qualities. Discussion 1. What influences the nutrient needs of an animal? A. functions the animal needs to perform such as growth, maintenance, and reproduction 2. What is meant by palatability? A. how well an animal likes a feed 3. Show a hamburger, fries, and shake on a plate. Ask “Is it palatable?” Place all items in a blender and blend. Compare palatability. 4. How does spoiled feed, poisons, and contamination with foreign objects affect seed quality? A. it can make feed dangerous to animals 5. What are the two types of feed manufacturing? A. On farm manufacturing and feedmills 6. Mixed feeds are made from a variety of ingredients. What are these ingredients? A. Roughages 1. Bales of hay 2. loss chop-silage 3. pellets and waters B.
