STAGE 1
Entry requirements for the Educate Teacher Training Assessment Only Route to QTS
 Candidates must be graduates and will normally hold a first degree, although
individual circumstances and experience may be taken into consideration. There is no requirement
for Secondary candidates to have a degree in a specific subject as long as all the QTS standards
including those that relate to subject and curriculum expectations are met.
 All Candidates must have passed GCSE in Maths and English with a C grade or above. In addition,
Primary phase Candidates must have passed Science GCSE at level C or above. (Please note: key
skills qualifications are not acceptable).
 Candidates must be currently employed, as an unqualified teacher, in a school, which is
prepared to endorse the application and support the process, although current individual
circumstances may be taken into account
 Educate Teacher Training can accept applications for the following secondary specialist
subjects only:









Art and Design
Design and Technology
Drama
English
History
Maths
Modern Languages
Music
PE
 Candidates must have passed the QTS skills tests in Maths and English, prior to
commencement on the course*
In addition you must have:
 extensive, relevant, recent and successful teaching experience (a minimum of 3 years, full time
equivalent) , in at least 2 schools and across 1 or more consecutive age ranges.
 practical teaching experience of teaching in any of the following educational settings:








Maintained school
Non-maintained special school
City Technology College
City College for the Technology of the Arts
Academy
Independent school
Further Education Institution
Sixth Form College
 verifiable references from your supporting school and a previous school(s), confirming your depth
and breadth of experience.
 evidence in the form of an initial portfolio which demonstrates your ability to meet the new
Teachers’ Standards for the award of QTS as defined by the National College (see website).
 an enhanced DBS check and health checks, as relevant to local Authority requirements.

STAGE 2
Application process:
 The relevant on-line application form should be completed and submitted directly to Educate
Teacher Training.
This should will include a personal statement of not more than 700 words, giving details of:






why you believe that you are eligible to apply for the Assessment Only Route with
Educate Teacher Training;
experiences in your specialist subject (secondary) or phase (primary);
details of the breadth of quality of your experience in teaching a range of classes/age
ranges;
your understanding of the qualities of an effective teacher;
your awareness and understanding of the national curriculum and current; educational
issues and how you have developed these;
your identified priorities for the development of subject knowledge and classroom
practice.
 There is a school endorsement statement, which should be completed by your supporting school,
detailing the depth, breadth and quality of your teaching experience and your eligibility for the AO
route.
 You should name 2 referees on the application form- headteachers or equivalent in the current
school and a previous school.
 Applications will be subject to scrutiny and moderation and will be assessed on the quality of the
application; the initial portfolio of evidence, personal statement, qualifications, school endorsement
and references.
 Successful candidates will be invited to an interview.
STAGE 3
Interview process:
 10 minute presentation
Secondary: you will be asked to talk about a school initiative which you have introduced, led
or to which you have made a significant contribution
Primary: You will be asked to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the Rose
report: early reading and the systematic teaching of synthetic phonics
Prior to interview, you will be asked to complete and bring to interview a suitability to teach
form along with a health and fitness questionnaire
 You will be asked to present and discuss an initial portfolio of evidence which demonstrates
breadth and depth of experience in the relevant consecutive key stages and/or specialist subject
(secondary) and the ability to meet the standards for QTS as defined by National College (see
website).
 You will participate in a formal interview.
 The interview will be conducted by a member of the Senior Leadership Team. Successful candidates
will be registered on the AO route.
 You will be asked to bring original qualification documents, DBS check and proof of identity to the
interview.

STAGE 4
Assessment Process:
The process will be compliant with all accreditation and safeguarding requirements and will be
undertaken over 1 full school term or equivalent. The process will be undertaken with due regard to equality
of access.
Successful candidates will be assigned an experienced phase or specialist subject ITT Assessor, who will
undertake 4 school visits.
 Initial Assessment Visit to assess your prior experience and needs and to offer relevant
guidance and support including how to further develop evidence against all 8 standards:



discussions of the Assessment Only process and requirements; agreement on the age
ranges and a timeline for assessment
initial lesson observation, with the school mentor, to establish the baseline for
Assessment
discussion with relevant key school personnel on operating the ITT Partnership; their
role in offering support for the gathering of evidence and undertaking and recording a
prescribed number of lesson observations
 2 Quality Assurance Progress Visits (PV Visits)
The Assessor will undertake additional visits to the school in order to:




undertake a lesson observation, with the school mentor, with formative feedback
discuss progress with the portfolio of evidence
offer advice and support
At PV 3, advice will be given on CEDP and the Induction Year.
 Final Assessment Visit, to include:





interview with you regarding the portfolio of evidence
focused questions on key standards and current educational priorities
discussion with reference to CEDP and Induction Year
interviews with relevant key school personnel
lesson observation
 Final moderation of judgement by Educate Teacher Training Senior Leadership Team
 Final report and recommendation for QTS
 Evidence requirements
 During the 1-term programme, the school mentor will be required to arrange a minimum of 6
formal lesson observations of the candidate teaching and record these on the Educate
Teacher Training proforma
 The candidate will be required to write a minimum of 10 Reflective Journals (Educate
Teacher Training Proforma) and undertake and record a minimum of 6 lessons observations
of other teachers (Educate Teacher Training proforma)
QTS SKILLS TESTS
All applicants must have passed the QTS skills tests before embarking on the route

Cost
The programme is not funded by the National College and costs will be charged to the supporting
school, which will then make its own arrangements with the candidate. The cost for the programme
is £2,675 which includes an initial and non-returnable administration fee of £200.00.
