Spay-Neuter-Now, Ltd. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to putting a dent into pet overpopulation in the North Country by providing educational opportunities to the public and veterinary professionals, as well as providing spay/neuter assistance programs. Spay-Neuter-Now program operations rely on public donations, fundraisers and grants. Spay-Neuter-Now (SNN) was founded by Beatrice Schermerhorn of Hammond, NY in 1994 starting a voucher program to reduce client costs at participating veterinary clinics. In 2004 SNN purchased the first Neuter Commuter, a retrofitted 24-foot RV as a mobile spay/ neuter clinic to reach further into communities in greater need of assistance. In 2008, the “Neuter Commuter II” replaced the aging mobile clinic with a custom-built 27-foot mobile surgical suite that in 2017 continues to provide spay/neuter services at host locations primarily across Jefferson, St. Lawrence and Lewis counties - an area larger than the size of Connecticut! Since 1994, SNN has performed and aided in over 18,000 spay & neuter surgeries of North Country animals in need of assistance. National estimates indicate that there are over 100,000 cats and dogs that are not spayed or neutered. Spaying/Neutering your pet is important! There is an excess of unwanted puppies/kittens and dogs/cats already filling shelters across the nation. Pet overpopulation is not a problem that can resolve itself! You can not adopt your way out! Long-term spaying & neutering of the population is key! For every person born, 15 dogs and 45 cats are also born. Millions of cats and dogs born each year will never find a home. Spaying & Neutering is the surgical removal of the reproductive organs and is the most common sterilization method in the United States. Spaying & Neutering requires general anesthesia, monitoring, surgical preparation and a licensed veterinarian to surgically remove the female ovaries & uterus (spaying) or the male testicles (neutering). Spaying & Neutering is a low-risk surgery and can be formed on cats and dogs that are at least 12 weeks old. Benefits of spaying/neutering include no more litters, heat cycles, and reduced long-term health risks. SNN’s mobile clinic provides subsidized-cost, high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter services for cats & dogs for qualifying clients. Clients may qualify based on household income, situation (helping take care of an unowned stray or feral cat or a colony of cats) and also for military households. The SNN clinic uses a flat fee package that includes the spay/neuter surgery, pain medication, vaccinations for rabies and distemper, as well as a flea treatment. The flat fee for SNN clients for cats is $70 and dog flat fees range from $100-$160 depending on weight for a package that would be valued at $150-$500 at local veterinary clinics. Since 2011, SNN has provided over 5,000 rabies vaccinations for animals going through its programs. In addition to the SNN mobile clinic program, SNN has a partner program with Town & Country Vet Clinic (Ogdensburg, Potsdam, Massena) that is effectively matching SNN’s mobile clinic flat fee packages.
