Expectations
Be A Good Citizen -- Students should treat each other
and the teacher with respect. This holds true for the
physical classroom as well. Defacing school property or
the personal property of others is not expected. In other
words, polite and mature behavior is expected at all
times.
Be A Good Student -- Students should come to class
prepared to be an active participant!
Be A Lifelong Learner -- Students should complete all
assignments, both in class and out of class.
Expectations
Be Timely – Tardies and late work will have consequences
Adopt Appropriate Behavior – Learning will not be
disrupted by inappropriate behavior

Expectations
At AIS students will:
Follow classroom and school rules.
Be considerate, courteous and respectful. Inappropriate behavior includes
rudeness, back talk, swearing, name-calling, putdowns, etc.
Listen to and follow directions of: teachers, administrators, custodians,
secretaries, instructional assistants, substitutes, parents, and other adults in
authority.
Be on time and prepared for class. Bring all necessary classroom materials.
Walk in an orderly manner on campus. Inappropriate behavior includes:
running, yelling, pushing, shoving, interfering with the flow of traffic,
congregating or moving around in large groups.
Keep hands, feet and objects to themselves. Inappropriate behavior
includes: shoving, kicking, tripping, hitting, horseplay, play fighting and
fighting.
Show respect for school property and the property of others.
Inappropriate behavior includes: writing on or scratching school or other
people’s property, or taking things without asking to borrow or use them.
Have food only in the cafeteria. Inappropriate behavior includes: eating or
drinking in the halls, gym or classrooms except under circumstances
authorized by teachers.
Bring problems and concerns to the attention of an adult: Inappropriate
behavior includes: talking about others, spreading rumors or hearsay,
confronting other students.

CLASS PERIOD
Ø Class begins when the BELL RINGS

DISMISSAL
Ø The TEACHER dismisses class, not the bell
§
When instructed, pack up materials
§
Clean up and straighten desk area
§
WAIT to be dismissed by teacher
§
Stand up, PUSH in chair, WALK to the door

in correct lines for dismissal.

COME TO CLASS PREPARED
Ø Students must have with them for each class

Ø Students are NOT allowed to go to their lockers to
retrieve forgotten items.
MISSING WORK
Ø Receives no credit until assignment is completed (grade
= “0”)…Three days of Grace!
Ø Any assignment still incomplete after 3 Days will
receive a final grade of “0” for that assignment.
Procedures
IF ABSENT:
Ø Assignments given on a day when a student is:
§
Present are due the day the student returns
§
Absent are due within 2 days upon his/her return
Ø Student’s responsibility to find out what was missed
from the Absent Folders and to pick up any handouts
from the Absent Folders
Procedures
LOST OR MISPLACED ITEMS
Ø Students are responsible for lost, misplaced, or stolen
items and must replace them by either:
§
Purchasing new item (ex: textbooks)
§
Photocopying a friend’s blank copy (handouts)
§
Downloading a copy from Ms. B’s website (handouts)
§
Hand writing your own copy (handouts)
Website will be ready in 3 – 4 weeks!
Procedures
GRADING QUESTIONS
Ø Students that have a question about a graded paper
will:
§ Write a brief note about the item(s) in question
(preferably on a post-it note). In the note, be certain to:
ü Identify the SPECIFIC item(s) you would like reviewed.
ü Reason why you would like it reviewed.
§ Give the entire assignment along with the note to the
teacher.
Ø I will review the item(s) in question and get back to you
with a decision on the item(s) questioned.
Ø Students have the option of requesting a pass to come
in early in the morning to check assignment grading
accuracy as well as for tutoring.
Ø This system is in place so we don’t waste valuable class
time with individual issues.
Procedures
Bathroom/Water
Ø Students that have a need for the restroom may ask to
go unless direct instruction is occurring.
Ø Before you may go to the restroom:
§ Be sure it is independent work time and that you have
permission.

No multi-colored pens allowed
Ø NEAT and easily legible, high quality work – does not
HAVE to be written in cursive! USE YOUR BEST
HANDWRITING!
Ø If it is a typed assignment: use size 12 Times New
Roman or Arial font, and double spaced
Conventions
SPELLING
Correct spelling is expected of 5th grade students.
In most instances, the word is correct in the text and just
needs to be copied. The awareness becomes habit.
Students develop into good spellers by:
· being aware and accountable for correct spelling, and
· copying the word correctly every time when used.
Weekly Spelling Tests will help prepare you on commonly
miss-spelled words!
Conventions
COMPLETE SENTENCES
Complete sentences are expected from 5th grade
students.
A complete sentence will:
· be legible and express a complete thought
· have the first word capitalized of the sentence
· name the subject (no pronouns, “it”, “this”, “there”,
“yes/no, because”, etc. are allowed—be clear and direct)
· have subject and verb agreement (plural with plural;
singular with singular)
· have proper punctuation
The expectation of answering in complete sentences helps
you to become better communicators as well as clarify
your own thought processes and understanding of
ideas.
