RAMS on the Road
RAMS on the Road is a new initiative from the
university designed to bring the new student
orientation process closer to our future students.
Here at Winston-Salem State University we
recognize the increasingly difficult economic times
presents new challenges for admitted students who
must travel to our campus in preparation for their
upcoming freshmen year. So, we are hitting the road!
That means we will load a bus (Housing and
Residence Life, Financial Aid, Placement Testing
and Health Services) and we are coming to your
community.
This is not a recruitment program rather it is a
program for students in your surrounding area who
have been accepted to Winston-Salem State
University. During this program accepted students
will complete placement testing (required for all
entering freshmen); parents will participate in
sessions intended to address any financial aid and
housing questions. We will also conduct a “Letting
Go” session designed to prepare parents for the day
they leave their student on our campus.

MEAC boss says WSSU is on track
If Winston-Salem State is thinking about going
back to the CIAA, that's news to Commissioner
Dennis Thomas of the Mid-Eastern Athletic
Conference.
Thomas, who was made available for a news
conference before last night's men's championship
game, said he has talked with WSSU officials and
everything appears to be on track.
"As I've indicated, all communications with
Winston-Salem State have pointed toward them
becoming active members of Division I," Thomas
said.
The Rams, who are completing their fourth year
of the transition to Division I, have another year to go
before the NCAA can grant them status at the
Division I level.
Earlier this year, Chancellor Donald Reaves of
WSSU indicated that the school would look at
possibly going back to Division II and the CIAA.
According to the athletics budget, it will lose close to
$1.5 million this academic year.
Reaves also fired Athletics Director Chico
Caldwell on Feb. 9, adding to the speculation.
Two of Reaves spokesmen said that Reaves, who
has been a constant presence at the MEAC
Tournament all week, would not comment.
Thomas, who gave a state of the address about the
direction of the MEAC, said that having WSSU in
the conference is a good thing.
"As I've indicated, Winston-Salem State is
pointing toward Division I," Thomas said.

WSSU Invites Public to Contribute
to Scholarships and Celebrate a
GRAMMY®-Award Winning Night
of Musical Enjoyment
As

with
budget cuts and tuition increases, Winston-Salem
State University (WSSU) is working hard to provide
financial aid for students who qualify academically,
but fall short financially.
“It’s paramount that we provide young, talented
minds with access to a university education,” said
Donald J. Reaves, Ph.D., chancellor of WSSU. “To
increase the number of scholarships we are awarding,
we need the support of our communities, alumni,
members of the faith community and other friends of
the university to support scholarships.”
“One of my strategic goals is to improve the
student experience,” Chancellor Reaves continued.
“A way to do that is to provide the financial
assistance deserving students need.”
To assist in that effort, on Tuesday, March 24th at
8 p.m., WSSU will host an evening of musical
enjoyment featuring GRAMMY® award-winning
songstress, Patti Austin. Along with performing
classic R&B and jazz numbers, Austin will also
perform with the WSSU Burke Singers under the
direction of D’Walla Simmons Burke, director of
choral programs at WSSU. To complete the evening,
Robert Moody, musical director of the WinstonSalem Symphony, will serve as the master of
ceremonies.
“We are thrilled to have this exciting collaboration
between the university and the symphony. The
university is also grateful for a group of donors -members of the Producer’s Circle--- who have fully
underwritten the cost of the event,” said Michelle
Cook, vice chancellor of the Division of University
Advancement at WSSU. We invite the community to
join us for this important event as we raise money to
support scholarships on our campus. Plus, you’ll be
spending a special evening with one of the greatest
legends and voices of our time.”
In addition to supporting a student’s education,
concert goers will hear Austin pay homage to jazz
greats George Gershwin and Ella Fitzgerald, hear
smash hits like “Baby Come to Me”, and “How Do
You Keep the Music Playing”.
No stranger to the Triad, Austin has performed
with the Winston-Salem Symphony, paying tribute to
the great Ella Fitzgerald. Excited to work with Austin
again, Moody, who has served as the music director
for the Winston-Salem Symphony since 2005,
promises the event will be “a night to remember!”
Individual ticket prices are $50, and can be
purchased
on-line
at

http://ticketmaster.com, and at the WSSU Ticket
Office at (336) 750-3220. The day of the show,

proper university ID, and can be purchased at WSSU.

Decision Time: Tough 3rd season
for Rams' Collins
Winston-Salem State's basketball season came to a
predictable end Saturday with a 63-56 loss to N.C.
Central in the bonus game of the MEAC Tournament
at Joel Coliseum.
As the seconds wound down to the finish, Coach
Bobby Collins of WSSU had a blank stare. For fans
who watched closely this season, it was a familiar
face.
Collins' biggest concern was that with the game on
the line late, the Rams backed down and the smaller
Eagles, with three previous wins, made all the right
moves.
"This was a carbon copy of our season," said
Collins, whose team finished 8-22.
Collins will have plenty of decisions to make before
next season. WSSU will be in the final year of its
transition to Division I, and Collins will be in the last
year of his contract.
Collins and his staff will have exit interviews with
each of the team's players this week, and those
interviews will determine which scholarship players
will return. Turnover is expected.
Center Paul Davis, who improved greatly from his
freshman to his sophomore season, says that next
season should much better. The Rams will lose just
one starter, forward Jamal Durham.
"Next year I think we are looking good, and in
these last two seasons, we've had losing seasons, so I
think it's time for a winning season," Davis said.
Despite the 8-22 record, Collins says that the
Rams overachieved, mainly because of youth in the
backcourt. The mercurial Isiah Tucker, a sophomore,
was the main point guard, but when he struggled, the
Rams struggled. Tucker had more turnovers than
assists (103 to 95) and often clashed with Collins on
the sideline. Freshman Lamar Monger, the other
point guard, also had more turnovers than assists (56
to 36).
"I really think that we have overachieved," Collins
said. "I think that we've done a good job of where we
are."
Collins blamed the transition to Division I for
some of his team's failings. He says that motivating
the Rams hasn't been easy because, although they
played a full MEAC schedule, those results don't
count in the conference standings.
"Teams prepared for us a lot more and I've been
told by some of my colleagues that we worried
them," Collins said. "Even though the games didn't
count in the standings, that was gratifying to hear
those comments because I'm a competitor."
The Rams were 6-12 against MEAC teams, and the
other wins were against Division III Averett and
NAIA Columbia Union.
Collins tried all season to understand and explain
his team's lapses in concentration at key moments. A
good example came Saturday, when the Rams had
one field goal in the final 3½ minutes.
"Patience has been a virtue of mine," said Collins,
who is 25-64 in three seasons at WSSU. "This has
been the toughest year, and I know the tougher years
are yet to come, but with the challenges of having
another transition year added on, that's a setback."
When asked if he learned something this season
Collins said: "I've learned that you have to have
good, solid guard play, and we just haven't had that
on a consistent basis."
There's been speculation about the direction of
WSSU's athletics program, but Collins says he isn't
concerned.
"I have not worried about all that, and I've just
been preparing for who we play," Collins said.
"Whether it's Division I or Division II, I want to win
games. So I can't worry about what we can't control:
let's just compete at a high level no matter what."
Collins admits that the fact he has only one year left
on his contract could hurt in recruiting, but he's been
in that position before, at Hampton.
"I'm not worried that it is the last year of my
contract," Collins said. "I hope I'm what WinstonSalem State wants. I just want to win games and not
worry about anything else."
