Exit Slip One Pager
Rationale for Strategy Use
Steps for Strategy Use
 Exit slips are highly diagnostic
1. 5 minutes before the end of class, provide students with a simple, openended prompt that addresses a key concept covered in your lesson (see
examples on back)
 Students are more willing to tell
you what they don’t understand
this way – not in front of the
whole class
2. Have the students respond to your prompt on an index card or use a predesigned template
3. Students hand you their exit slips as they leave the classroom
 Exit slips help guide instruction the
following day
 Simple to use & quick
 The last few minutes of class are
often not productive – this
strategy is
 Holds every student accountable
4. Review the exit slips to guide your instruction the following day
5. You may choose to share some student exit slips the following day if there
was a common question or theme or if a slip was particularly good or
insightful
Additional Tips:
 You can use 1 prompt or allow students to pick from several prompts
 When first using exit slips, you’ll have to “teach” students how to use the
whole time to write & how to write quality responses (not, “That was boring”)
 You may want to assign points to exit slips - based probably on just completion
