Stan Browne Stan’s teaching career began at De La Salle Kingsgrove in 1983, where he later become Head of PDHPE, Sports Master and General Co-ordinator. In 1990 he was the PDHPE Curriculum Officer at the Sydney Catholic Education Office and in 1993 was appointed Sports Master at Marist Brothers Pagewood. In 1994, Stan commenced as Head of PDHPE K-12 at Trinity Grammar School. The Board of Studies (BOS) employed Stan to the tenure of Senior Curriculum Officer in 2002, returning to Trinity in 2004 as a Master Teacher. In May 2005, Stan fulfilled the role of BOS Inspector for PDHPE. Outstanding leadership is exemplified by Stan in the PDHPE KLA. At Trinity he coached high level Track and Field, Rugby Union and Volleyball (MIC). Whilst still employed at Trinity, Stan regularly presented at AIS PDHPE conferences mentoring other Heads of PDHPE, hosting visits and providing faculty observations. Stan’s leadership roles escalated to embody the BOSTES Inspector of PDHPE for 10 years and the Senior Curriculum Officer in PDHPE for 3 years. Stan is well respected across all teaching sectors within NSW and as a leader at the National curriculum level. Stan has extensively advocated the strength of the PDHPE curriculum and profession overall, through his professional roles including the NSW representative at National forums on curriculum development, as NSW representative liaising on the National Health and Physical Education network and having developed countless Ministerial correspondence and briefings. Stan has been a regular contributing presenter to professional associations and tertiary sector conferences, focusing on the professional learning of colleagues, providing current information and quality approaches to programming, assessment and resource development to support teaching and learning. He led the development of numerous BOSTES syllabus support materials in the PDHPE KLA for over 10 years and was a key author of the Stage 6 text “Application and Inquiry in PDHPE”. Stan has contributed extensively to the development of PDHPE BOS and school courses. In 1994, Stan was an advisory group member to the Alcohol Education in Schools Project. Further involvement and mentoring included an invitation by the BOS in 1996 to participate in a pilot program for the selection and monitoring of work samples in PDHPE classes. In 1998, he was a member of the BOS Evaluation Project Team for the review of all Higher School Certificate subjects, engaged in a cross-sectoral reference/writing team to develop professional learning materials in PDHPE and was part of a writing workshop for the Stage 6 PDHPE syllabus in 1999. Stan led the review of the Stage 6 syllabus in PDHPE and CAFS, and the introduction of Stage 4 and 5 courses such as PASS and Child Studies. Overall, he led and managed the work of BOSTES PDHPE committees for syllabus projects and examinations. As an experienced Senior Marker of PDHPE and as BOSTES Inspector, Stan Browne Stan quality assured the HSC examination development process and provided support to committee members for both PDHPE and CAFS. He provided editorial roles in the production of PDHPE examination reports and student advice for major media publications. As a member of the PDHPE Teachers’ Association (PDHPE TA) for over 20 years, Stan presented at numerous conferences and courses organised by regional representatives. He ensured the PDHPE TA voice was strongly heard at BOS curriculum review/writing activities and utilised his PDHPE Inspector position to make a strong contribution to access and equity issues for young people. Stan’s management guided the introduction of legislation, policy and procedure implementation to support alternative education pathways for students unable to succeed in mainstream settings, the BOSTES Special Education program leading to expansions in course availability to students with Special Education needs and BOSTES course endorsement programs for school developed and university developed courses. Thus, Stan has been effective in demonstrating the contribution that PDHPE Educators make to the entire education sector, regardless of their subject area. This in turn has been a valuable contribution in raising the profile of the profession. Stan has always demonstrated the highest level of professionalism, exuding extraordinary global knowledge and skill beyond the PDHPE subject area. He is a master teacher/facilitator who continues to develop a genuine rapport with students and staff alike. Stan has been a wonderful example and mentor to all those who have associated with him. The PDHPE TA holds Stan in the highest esteem and thanks him for his contributions beyond the call of duty. Stan is a most worthy recipient of the 2014 PDHPETA Doug Scholz Award For Outstanding Contribution to the PDHPE Profession.
