Summer Reading – Mrs. Engel – Tic-Tac-Toe Activities
Find a news article online that corresponds to the subject of your book. Print it out and write one full paragraph summarizing the article and making the connection to your novel. In at least two full paragraphs, discuss the significance of the title of your novel. Why do you think the author picked that title and what does it mean now that you’ve read the story? Cite any quotes from the novel that support your answer. Create a timeline, or sequence of fifteen main events, that occurred in the story. Put them in order in an organized but creative manner. Your events must be summarized. To highlight the significance of this book, write a five to eight sentence response to each of the following questions: a. What life lessons have you learned from reading this book? Explain. b. What did you like and dislike the most about this book? Explain using details and examples. Draw, paint or sketch the setting of your novel. Be sure to clearly capture the essence of the setting. No white space allowed. Write a short paragraph detailing your scene, and how it is important to the story. Find ten words that you did not recognize or understand. Write the sentence in which it is found in the novel, and then use a dictionary to write out the correct definition of the word. Complete three assignments in the tic­tac­toe (must be in horizontal, vertical, or diagonal direction) over any book from the summer reading list. Be sure to write your name, book, and author on the assignment. Compile everything, either stapled or in a folder, and turn in on the first day of school or open house­regardless if you have literature first or second semester. When at all possible, type your assignment in 12 pt. font/Times New Roman. Plagiarism results in a zero for the assignment and disciplinary action.
