2015 CHAMPIONS
REPORT FROM QUEBEC CITY
The national finals of the 27th annual Canadian
Chess Challenge were held on Victoria Day weekend
at Laval University in Quebec City.
The weather on Saturday morning was perfect for a
horse-drawn carriage tour of the beautiful and historic
walled city. The afternoon blitz tournament was won by
International Master Razvan Preotu (Burlington). And in
the evening, there was a delicious opening banquet.
The competition began Sunday. As usual, a bagpiper
played as the teams marched into the hall carrying
their provincial flags. Following the national anthem, the
players shook hands and started their clocks.
When the last king was mated on Monday afternoon,
Ontario had captured first place for the sixth time in a
row, winning all of their matches and earning eleven
medals, including six golds. Their total score of 95½
points was just shy of the all-time record (97).
As you can see in the photo on page 9, the prizes at
the nationals are trophies. But that doesn’t stop us from
talking as if they were medals, like at the Olympics.
A powerful Quebec team placed second, with eleven
players taking home prizes. Their only loss was a close
7-5 against Ontario in the final round.
British Columbia came third with five players winning
trophies. They won impressively against most teams,
but lost to Ontario 9½-2½ and Quebec 10-2. It was the
first time since 2003 that BC did not win a gold medal.

Alberta took fourth place with six team victories. Mark
Ivanescu (Edmonton) won silver in grade 3.
New Brunswick, led by grade 9 champion Sam Song
(Fredericton) captured fifth place for the third year in
a row. They also 3-peated as Top Atlantic Team.
The Most Improved Team was Quebec, who scored
10 more points than 2014. Saskatchewan also did well,
jumping two places in the standings (9th to 7th).
Twelve players went undefeated. Perfect 9-0’s were
posted by Anthony Atanasov (Oakville), Qiuyu Huang
(Montreal), Sam Song, Razvan Preotu, Adam Dorrance
(Cambridge NS), and Zhao Yang Luo (Montreal).
Four 2014 champions returned to defend their title.
Three of them succeeded: Qiuyu Huang, Nicholas
Vettese (Toronto), and Razvan Preotu.

A playoff game decided first place in grade 2. Other
grades with ties for prizes were 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12.
Anyone that lost a playoff for third place received a
plaque for fourth place.
There were ten sets of siblings at the tournament, on
six different teams. Like last year, the best results
were by the Dorrance brothers of Nova Scotia: Lucas
(grade 8, 4th place), Adam (grade 11, 1st). Three kids
from the Sasata family (Saskatoon) took part, with big
brother Alexander tying for third place in grade 5.
Prince Edward Island came last in the team standings,
but not in individual points. Jacky Jia (Charlottetown,
grade 7) earned PEI’s first medal in many years.
Seven girls participated. Yi Lin Li (Montreal) won silver
in grade 8. Cynthia Cui (Fredericton) tied for third in
grade 6.
The Most Valuable Player award, given to the player
who scores the highest percentage of points on their
team, went to Adam Dorrance of Nova Scotia. It was
the fourth time in five years that he won the award.
Team Manitoba, wearing blue with a moose logo,
received the $200 first prize for the Best Team Shirt.
PEI was second and Nova Scotia third.

The Yves Casaubon Outstanding Contribution Award
was presented to Ontario coordinator Leslie Armstrong
(Aurora) for seventeen years of dedicated service to the
Canadian Chess Challenge. We’ll miss you, Leslie.
A bughouse tournament was held after the awards
ceremony on Monday. It’s always a very popular event.
Adam Dorrance and Robert Hamilton came first after
winning a playoff over Lefong Hua and Justin Deveau.
Merci beaucoup to chief organizer and scorekeeper
Christian Lacasse for an excellent show.
The 2016 finals are tentatively scheduled for Regina,
Saskatchewan. We hope to see you there!

DESPERADOS
This lesson is about a tactic
that minimizes material loss.
A desperado was an outlaw of the Old West who would
do anything to escape from people trying to catch him. (The
word ‘desperado’ means someone who is desperate.)
In chess, a desperado is a piece w________w
that is going to be lost. But instead áNdwdw4kd]
of losing it for nothing, you use it à0wdwdp0w]
to take anything you can. Even a ßw0wdndw0]
pawn is better than nothing.
Þdwdwdwdw]
The white knight in diagram #1 Ýwdwdwdwd]
is trapped in the corner and about ÜdwGwdwdw]
to be captured by the black rook. ÛP)wdw)P)]
This makes him a desperado. ÚdwdwdRIw]
1.Nxb6! gives up the knight but wÁÂÃÄÅÆÇÈw

leaves White with an extra pawn. w________w
In example #2, White is forked áwdwdrdkg]
by the bishop on d5 and will lose à0w$wdpdw]
material. 1.Rb1 Bxf3 is good for ßwhwdwdw0]
Black and 1.Nd2 loses to 1...Re1+ ÞdwdbdPdw]
2.Nf1 (2.Kh2 Rh1#) 2...Bxb3 .
Ýwdw0wdPd]
But White can save the day with ÜdRdwdNGw]
a desperado. After 1.Rxb6! axb6 Ûwdwdw)wd]
(1...Bxf3? 2.Rb1) 2.Kg2, the game ÚdwdwdwIw]
is equal. (2.Nd2? Re1+ 3.Nf1 Bf3! 
wÁÂÃÄÅÆÇÈw
causes problems.)

The white knight and bishop are
forked by the rook in diagram #3.
One of them will be lost. (1.Bd1?
Rc1 or 1.Nd2? Rd3!) This is the
signal to look for a desperado!
1.Bxe6 Rxf3 and 1.Nxe5 Rxb3
each get White one pawn. But
1.Nxg5+! fxg5 2.Bxe6 gets two
pawns for the piece. And two is
even better than one! With all the
pawns on one side of the board,
and a bishop and a pawn for the
rook, White should draw easily.
In example #4, the white queen
entered Black’s camp to capture
a rook on a8, but got trapped. So
now she becomes a desperado.
After 1.Qxf8+! Kxf8, White has
two rooks and two pawns for a
queen, which is a big advantage.
If the queen tries to run, she will have to give herself up
for a minor piece. 1.Qa7 Bb8! 2.Qa8 (2.Qa5 b6!) 2...Nc7
3.Qxb8 (3.Qa5? b6!) 3...Rxb8 or 1.Qa5 b6 2.Qa7 (2.Qa6
Nc7) 2...Nc8 3.Qa6 Nc7.

w________w
Let’s look next at ways to win árdwdkdrd]
material with desperados.
àdwdwdw0w]
The typical situation is when ßpdw0BgR0]
both players have a piece under Þdp0whwdw]
attack. In example #5, each side ÝwdwdPdwd]
has a rook threatened. Nothing Ü)wHPdwdP]
is gained by 1.Bxg8 Nxg6. But Ûw)Pdwdwd]
White can first grab a bishop ÚdwIRdwdw]
before taking the black rook! 
wÁÂÃÄÅÆÇÈw
1.Rxf6! gxf6 2.Bxg8.
w________w
In diagram #6, both queens are áwdwdr4kd]
hanging. The position would be à0pdwdp0p]
equal after 1.Rxd6 Rxe4. Since ßwhp1wdwd]
the white queen is about to be Þdwdwdwdw]
taken, she becomes a desperado. ÝwdwdQdwd]
The winning shot is 1.Qxe8!
ÜdPdwdNdP]
If 1...Rxe8 2.Rxd6, White is up ÛPdwdw)Pd]
a rook. Be careful though. The ÚdwdRdRIw]
black queen is also a desperado! 
wÁÂÃÄÅÆÇÈw
1...Qxd1!?
Now the game is even following 2.Rxd1 Rxe8. But wait
a second. It’s the white queen’s turn again! 2.Qxf8+! is
check and that brings the fun to an end. 2...Kxf8 3.Rxd1.
White is ahead a rook.
Our final diagram is a quiz for you.

how White can win a pawn with a desperado?

This creative master from St. Petersburg was the

He played for the world championship twice
against Wilhelm Steinitz, and almost won their
second match at Havana, Cuba in 1892.
Many combos are based on pins. A piece is pinned
when it is attacked and cannot move because the king
or another valuable piece is behind it.
K White wins the exchange (R for B) with 1.Qg4+.
1...Rd7 2.Be6! pins the rook (2...Ne5 3.Bxd7+). And
1...Kb8 allows the x-ray attack 2.Bg5! (2...Qxc3 3.Bxd8)
k But if Black goes first, they mate in 2 by 1...Qxf2+!
2.Rxf2 Rd1#. The rook on f2 is pinned. (2.Kh1 Qxf1#)
“A possible combination lies
hidden in each position.”
CHIGORIN DEFENCE
1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nc6
Famous for sharp tactics and original ideas,
Chigorin believed that knights were better than
bishops. He worked very hard to promote chess
and is known today as “the founder of the
Russian School of Chess”.

By the way, in case you were wondering, falafels are made
from mashed up chick peas and spices. They’re rolled into
little balls, deep fried, and then served on pita bread with
tomatoes, lettuce, and tasty sauce. Most people like tahini
(sesame sauce) but Joe always uses tzatziki (a Greek dip
of yogurt, cucumber, and garlic). Yum-yum!

HOW TO READ A CHESS GAME
It's easy. The board has 8 files
and 8 ranks. Files are the rows
of squares that go up and down.
Each one is named by a small
letter. Ranks are rows that go
sideways. Each one is named
by a number.
Every square also has a name.
The first part is its file and the
second part is its rank. In this
diagram, a white pawn moved
to e4 and a black pawn to e5.
When moves are written down,
the first capital letter shows the
piece which moves. Q is queen.
B is bishop. R is rook. N is used
for knight because the king is K.
If there is no capital letter, that
means a pawn moves.
Next is the square that the
piece moves to. Bc4 says that a
bishop moves to the square c4.
When a piece is captured, an x
is put before the square. Qxf7
means a queen takes on f7.
If a pawn captures, the letter
of the file it starts on is given
first, then an x followed by the
square it takes on. exd5 says a
pawn on the e-file captures on
the square d5.
When two pieces of the same
kind can go to the same spot,
another letter is put after the
piece to show what file it came
from. Rae1 tells us that a rook
on the a-file moves to e1.
If the pieces that can move to
the same spot are on the same
file, then their rank number is
added. N6e4 means the knight
on the 6th rank moves to e4.
