Mine will include books about farms, toy sheep, photos of sheep, a toy tractor & a Shaun the Sheep DVD! Read & Sing: Baa Baa Black Sheep PowerPoint – read the rhyme using the bright, visual pictures for your child to look at. Finger puppets – act out the nursery rhyme using these. (Develop interest in rhymes) Communication & Language (Listening & attention, understanding & speaking) Play & Learn Class (Enjoys rhymes and demonstrates listening by trying to join in with actions or vocalisations) Sing Baa Baa Black Sheep with actions (as above). Show picture of a sheep (Frequently imitates words and sounds). Use fingers to represent numbers in nursery rhyme – count to 3 on fingers when singing “3 bags full” and “1 for the master…” etc. (Says some counting words randomly). Sheep sounds – make “baa” noises and associate them with toys/pictures of sheep (frequently imitates words and sounds). Mathematics (Numbers, Shape, Space & Measure) Sing rhyme & hand out “bags of wool” – have 3 lots of “wool” (can be any item you like) and give each 1 to the finger puppets as you sing the rhyme (1-1 correspondence). Farm animal jigsaw puzzle (Attempts to fit shapes into spaces on jigsaw puzzle). Activity 3 Activity 4 Find the Word - Put a toy / wooden sheep on the word ‘Sheep’ found on a printed copy of the nursery rhyme (focus on meaningful print). Sheep colour match – use a picture or toy black sheep and use it to find other objects around the house that are black (counting objects). Count the sheep video – say the numbers out loud and clearly as each sheep appears (Says some counting words randomly). Activity 5 Baa Baa Black Sheep Theme: 16-26 Months Understanding of the World (People & communities, the world & technology) Small World Background use toy farm animals & tractor to create a farm scene (enjoys playing with small-world models such as a farm) Go for a walk to find some sheep (use the local area for exploring the natural environment). Physical Development (Moving & handling, health & self-care) Play & Learn Class (space to encourage free movement). Pretend to be a sheep – crawl round on all fours. Soft-Play / Play Date (space to encourage free movement). Expressive Arts & Design (Exploring & using media& materials& being imaginative Baa Baa Black Sheep Orchestra - Play different instruments while singing the rhyme. Encourage child to join in (begins to move to music, listen to or join in rhymes or songs; Creates sounds by banging, shaking, tapping or blowing). Play-dough or Pom-Pom Sheep - (provide a wide range of materials, resources and sensory experiences to enable children to explore colour, texture and space). Phone Apps Handprint Sheep – use template below to create a sheep using yours and your child’s handprint (make connections between their movement and the marks they make). You can highlight this off once your child can do this regularly on your Child’s Progress Tracker (Red italics) – ADVANCED! Do not expect your child to be able to do this independently, however don’t’ be afraid to try “harder” activities as it all sets the stage for future independence, learning & imaginative play. Glossary: 1-1 correspondence: being able to match an object to a corresponding number and understanding numbers are a quantity of something. This is SO important because many children can count, but don’t actually understand the meaning or importance of the numbers.
