Don plays a 6. Since the current total is above 30, Don’s card is subtracted, bringing the new total to 27. Rules of Play Ages 8 and up • 2 to 5 players Contents 58 Wave Cards 18 Wipe-Out Tokens 21 Obstacle Cards 1 Direction Card Object of the Game Keep your cows surfing on the wave longer than your opponents, while avoiding obstacles that will make you wipe out. Set Up Choose a dealer. Separate the Wave Cards from the Obstacle Cards. Shuffle both sets of cards. Deal out three Wave Cards to each player. Place the rest of the Wave Cards face down in the center of the table as a draw pile. Turn over the top Wave Card and place it next to the draw pile to form the discard pile. This card represents how high the wave begins. Place the Direction Card on the table with the “Up” side face up to indicate that the wave is currently rising. If there are two or three players, each player receives two Obstacle Cards. If there are four or five players, each receives one Obstacle Card. Each player must show their Obstacle Card to the others before putting them in their hand. Place the rest of the Obstacle Cards face down on the table near the Wave Cards. Finally, place the Wipe-Out Tokens in a pile in the center of the table. If a player has an Obstacle Card equal to the new height of the wave, after a new Wave Card has been played, then the player should scream out “Cowabunga”. The player who played the Wave Card wipes out and must take a Wipe-Out Token. However, players are safe on the numbers of the Obstacle Cards in their own hands. Play then proceeds to the left. Note: If someone plays a Wave Card and a player has the Obstacle Card equal to the height of the wave, they must remember to reveal the Obstacle Card from their hand and scream “Cowabunga”. Additionally, players should point out if others are forgetting to reveal the Obstacle Card. Since there are certain situations where it may benefit a player to forget that they have an Obstacle Card (for example, to prolong the game), players may not intentionally forget to tell someone when they wipe out. Example: Continuing from above, the wave’s current height is 27, and is falling. Leo plays a 6, and announces the new height is 21. Leo has the 21 Obstacle Card in his hand, so he is safe from wiping out. However, Mike plays a 0 and announces the height of the wave is still 21. Leo screams out “Cowabunga” and reveals the 21 Obstacle Card from his hand. Mike wipes out and must take a Wipe-Out Token. End of the Game As soon as any player has four Wipe-Out Tokens, or when the last Obstacle Card is drawn, the game ends. The player with the fewest Wipe-Out Tokens wins! If two of more players are tied for fewest Wipe-Out Tokens, the tied player with the most Obstacle Cards wins. Game by: Reinhard Staupe Illustrations by: Randy Martinez Game Play The player to the left of the dealer goes first. One each player’s turn, they choose one of the three Wave Cards in their hand and place it face up on the discard pile, changing the height of the wave. The game begins with the wave rising (values ascending), so each time a card is placed on the discard pile the number on that card is added to the current height of the wave. Players announce the new height as they place Wave Cards on the discard pile. Once the wave reaches higher than 30 it begins to fall. The Direction Card is flipped, and cards placed on the discard pile will then subtract from the height (values descending). Once the wave reaches lower than 10, the Direction Card is flipped an it begins to rise again. This continues throughout the game. After a player places one of their Wave Cards on the discard pile, they announce the new height of the wave (even if it is unchanged) and draw a Wave Card. If the deck of Wave Cards ever runs out, shuffle the discard pile and turn it face down to form a new draw pile. If, while playing a Wave Card, a player causes the wave to change direction (exceed 30 or drop below 10), the player to their right gets to see a new obstacle on the horizon. That player draws an Obstacle Card, shows it to the other players, and then puts it in their hand. Example: The current total is 22. Leo plays an 8, and announces the new total is 30. Mike plays a 3, and announces the new total of 33. Since Mike raised the height of the wave above 30, Leo gets to draw an Obstacle Card (showing it to all of the players, then placing it into his hand). Mike flips the Direction Card so that “Down” is face up, indicating the wave is now falling. KANGA INTERNATIONAL PTY.
