Even though the Grand Duchy is the second smallest country in the EU, it offers numerous opportunities to enjoy physical activities in a beautiful natural setting. Cyclists can discover the country’s wide variety of landscapes by travelling its large national network of cycle paths. Cycling sport is indeed very popular in Luxembourg and it is by no means a coincidence that some of the most beautiful pages of Luxembourg’s sport history have been written by cyclists. WE OFFER: • Innovative and cost optimised concepts • Expertise in industrial processes • Young and dynamic high skilled team • All in one, from engineering to commissioning on site I would especially like to thank and congratulate the members of the Rotary Club Luxembourg-Vallées for taking the initiative of organising this international event in cooperation with one of Luxembourg’s best known cycling clubs, the ACC Contern. I would also like to thank Goodyear for opening up its 4 km long trial test circuit in Colmar Berg for cycling races on 10th September 2016. Reminding that the entire benefit of this championship will be given to social organisations, I wish you all a safe, pleasant and successful Rotary cycling event here in the “green heart of Europe”. IN LUXEMBOURG This sporting competition is a wonderful occasion for the Rotarians to meet up in a convivial environment and to experience as one the fundamental values of sport, which are a spirit of competition, commitment, fair play and solidarity. These last values, however, are not only sporting ones, but also those of the members of the different Rotary Clubs. Their motto “serve first” is also the thread running through this manifestation, created by the “Fellowship Cycling to Serve” through which sport places itself at the service of a noble cause, notably that of supporting charitable organizations, the “ONG Iwerliewen” and “Fondation Kim Kirchen”. I congratulate the members of the Rotary club Luxembourg-Vallées, as well as their partners of the cycling club ACC Contern, for their commitment to the good cause and the promotion of cycling and I hope that this event will have all the success it deserves. Romain Schneider Minister of Sports As this is a World Championship, I’d like to make use of the occasion to wish a hearty welcome to all foreign participants and I hope that they go away with wonderful memories of their stay in Luxembourg. One of its main projects is the organisation of the annual Fellowship Cycling to Serve World Championship. As Mayor of the City of Luxembourg, it is my pleasure to welcome all sport-loving Rotary-cyclists from around the world here in Luxembourg. In our multicultural city, we attach great importance to a positive and harmonious coexistence, and I know how important sports are for the cohesion of a society with citizens of diverse cultural backgrounds. The Goodyear circuit, mainly used for extensive tire testing purposes, has also a long history with ‘mobility’ events of all kinds, not only in relation to automotive sports. Every year, the test track is hosting runners, bicycles and even solar driven prototypes, some are using it for development, others for charity purposes or just simply for the sake of sports. For the first time in their now long history, the Rotarian world cycling championships will take place under the aegis of the FCS (Fellowship Cycling To Serve) at the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, a small corner of the world but an active and dynamic nation at the heart of our friendly Rotarian community. The Rotary Club of Luxembourg-Vallées, inspired by its spirited and enthusiastic president, a staunch member of the FCS since its earliest days, has the honour of hosting all Rotarian cyclists, friends and sponsors of the event on the second weekend of September. Our association, which is officially recognised by Rotary International, is celebrating its 32nd anniversary this year. Every May, it organises a cyclist meetup, the “4 days’’, and it is also organising the world Championships at the end of summer. The passion and the sense of community shared by the Rotarian cyclists all around the planet shines through in all of these events and allows us all to carry out some amazing service campaigns, locally and internationally. The Rotarian cyclists are men and women who, like other Rotarians, commit themselves to helping others. The FCS association, just like its members, is very international, with vibrant representation from various nations such as the USA, Canada, Europe, India, Australia and Sri Lanka, to name just a few, encouraging peace and collaboration in the world, which embodies our slogan: “Serve first’’. We have no doubts that the championships, hosted in this very internationally open country, will be an overwhelming success. Jean-Luc Berger International President FCS ROTARY FELLOWSHIP CYCLING TO SERV E WORLD CH AMPIONSHIPS 2016 | LUXEMBOURG 17 WHY ARE BICYCLE TIRES BLACK? EUGÈNE BIVER PRESIDENT OF THE ORGANISING COMMITTEE Bicycle tires are made out of rubber. Rubber is mainly consisting of polymers and fillers. Fillers are selected to give rubber different properties, e.g. elasticity or hardness. Member & past President 15/16 of the Rotary Club Luxembourg-Vallées (RCLV) Luxembourg Representative of the international Fellowship Cycling to Serve (FCS) The most commonly used filler is carbon black, which is pure carbon (chemical element C) in amorphous form and is aggregated to various particle size and complexity. More than 90% of all carbon black is used in tires and other rubber products. Dear Rotarian cycling friends, A dream comes true: After the memorable FCS 4 days event in Luxembourg in May 2006, many FCS presidents and numerous rotary friends pushed me to organize the second yearly event, which is the FCS World Championship, in my home country. HITEC Luxembourg is developing and manufacturing testing instruments for carbon black to make your link to the road even more performing based on a perfect rubber. During his visit last November, the FCS President Niko Endres had approved with me, the excellent race conditions on the Good-Year Proving Ground at Colmar-Berg. After this cruel shock, loosing the head of our organisation, it was difficult for all of us to find our way to continue to serve the noble cause of our Fellowship. But the organising committee thought “YES WE MUST”... and decided to dedicate this Luxembourg World Championship to our good friend NIKO. In this spirit, we invite you all, dear cycling friends, to the 32nd FCS World Championship. We are ready to welcome you in our lovely homeland of Luxembourg. My sincere thanks go to all active participants, to Goodyear for offering the racing track, to the members of my Rotary Club Luxembourg-Vallées, to all supporters, sponsors, helpers and to every one who will contribute, in any way, to the success of this event. On several occasions in the past, the cycling club ACC Contern has had the great pleasure to be part of the organization of world cycling championships, like for example the press worlds or those of the bakers, confectioners and pastry cookers. They may not have been the “real” cycling world championships, the UCI ones, but this is what made them so special and unforgettable: the mix of motivated and in-shape riders riding together with recreational next-door amateurs from around the world, each of them giving their very best in a fierce competition, a competition that came second, however, to togetherness and friendship. There is another reason, for sure: Rotary members are known for their charity and social-interest actions and these world championships are called “Cycling to Serve”. In fact, Luxembourg, which doesn’t have any really tough climbs, has produced cyclists who distinguished themselves in the mountainous Alps. Is this due to the fact that the inventor of the mountain stages of the Tour de France (Alphonse Steines) was a citizen of Luxembourg or another reason that we’re ignoring? Already in 1909, François Faber won the Tour de France. Nicolas Frantz, who was a two-time winner of the Tour de France (1927+1928), distrusted the other cyclists so much at this point, that he took the yellow jersey during the first stage and held onto it until the end of the tour in 1928. This exploit has never been matched again since! ROTARY FELLOWSHIP CYCLING TO SERV E WORLD CH AMPIONSHIPS 2016 | LUXEMBOURG Charly Gaul, who is still remembered by many cycling fans, and who was nicknamed “the angel of the mountain”, won the Tour de France in 1958; his ability to conquer the worst climbs was such that his team director went looking for Charly Gaul, who had not been seen for 20 minutes during the Mont Bondone stage of the Giro d’Italia in 1956. His director drove his car up the mountain pass, peering through his obstructed windscreen, when, totally by chance, he saw a bicycle leaning against a wall of a shabby mountain trattoria. “It’s Charly’s bike!”, his mechanic screamed! Finally, in the more recent past we have Andy Schleck who, with his brother Franck, was named “the kings of the mountains” and won the Big Loop in 2010. During the 15th stage, after some gear problems, he lost the yellow jersey he was wearing on the last ascent. He went on to win the 17th stage on the summit of Tourmalet pass ahead of his rival Alberto Contador. He didn’t manage to make up for his delay in the second last stage time trial between Bordeaux and Pauillac, and finished second in the Tour de France, just 39 seconds behind Contador. After Alberto Contador was stripped of the title, he was finally named the victor of this Tour de France 2010. But I’ll just be modest and wish all the participants, attendants and supporters wonderful moments of Rotarian camaraderie and exploits that fulfill their ambitions. If you put them together properly - just like our ancesters did – you can realise a funny little whistling-bird called 'Péckvillchen' in luxembourgish. Till now, this unusual bird appeared only once a year on Easter Monday in the old city of Luxembourg and in Nospelt where traditional markets, called “Emaischen” are held. Since Eugène Biver, the president of the organising committee of the Rotary Fellowship Cycling to Serve World Championships 2016 lives in Nospelt and produces hundreds of these little birds every year, they make their second appearance this year as the official mascot ot the event. 19, rue de Bitbourg EXPERTISE FISCALE L-1273 Luxembourg EXPERTISE COMPTABLE T. 24 521-1 CONSEIL EN ENTREPRISE F. 24 521-234 CONSEIL EN RESSOURCES HUMAINES W. gtf.lu SECRETARIAT SOCIAL ROTARY FELLOWSHIP CYCLING TO SERV E WORLD CH AMPIONSHIPS 2016 | LUXEMBOURG 45 ARCHITECTURE AND ART IN PUBLIC SPACE IN KIRCHBERG, LUXEMBOURG T H E H I S T OR IC A L E VOLU T ION OF T H E K I RC H BE RG In anticipation of the championships participants guided tour by bike at the Kirchberg on September 11, 2016 The early town-planning in Kirchberg was purely functional. The road infrastructure was an expressway with two intersections providing access to secondary roads serving the new buildings. The European Institutions were established at the approach to the bridge at the western end of the Plateau, with the buildings centred on their plots of land. Later, the "Foire Internation- 46 They were later supported by a multidisciplinary team comprising the Frankfurt architect and town planner Jochem Jourdan (Jourdan + Muller PAS), the Munich landscape architect Peter Latz and the Münster urban art specialist Kasper König. This team fine-tuned the different aspects of the urbanisation project - reorientation of the road infrastructure, structuring the building density in regular blocks and with street-frontage façades, juxtaposition of different areas of urban life, ecological 4 measures, urban art - and all this in collaboration with the Funds’ management committee. In 1991, the Fund Kirchberg adopted new guidelines which evolved from these considerations and began the changes which are the basis of the present urban development. Following the construction of the eastern motorway bypass around Luxembourg, the expressway (previously an exit road from the city) has been transformed into a city boulevard with lightcontrolled intersections replacing the former motorway-style junctions now raised to one level. Today, Avenue ROTARY FELLOWSHIP CYCLING TO SERV E WORLD CH AMPIONSHIPS 2016 | LUXEMBOURG The internal road system of the districts consists of a network of right-angled roads in a grid-pattern, while the cycle track network is independent of the road-traffic system. Construction now complies with an urban development plan based on a system of city blocks, with buildings facing the street and provision for the traditional varied requirements of city life: dwellings, offices, shops, sport, leisure and cultural activities. The ecological management of rain water and surface water is integrated into the landscaped green spaces in the form of drainage ponds situated in the Kirchberg’s parks which cover a total of 65 hectares. Museum of Modern Art Grand-Duc Jean (MUDAM) ROTARY FELLOWSHIP CYCLING TO SERV E WORLD CH AMPIONSHIPS 2016 | LUXEMBOURG European Investment Bank (EIB) © LCTO The foundation stone of the project was the construction of the Pont Grande-Duchesse Charlotte in 1963, based on plans drawn up by the German architect Egon Jux (1927-2008). Nicknamed “The Red Bridge” because of its vermillion hue, it is a work of metallic art, firmly modernist and, today, a classic of the genre. It straddles the Alzette valley to link the Plateau with the city centre. With the planned construction of a tramway right across Luxembourg’s capital city, the bridge will be widened and equipped with a new parapet designed by the engineering bureau Laurent Ney & Partners. European Institutions, the eastern end of the Plateau, with good access to roads and international links such as the motorway and Findel airport. This choice by the banks led the Fund to consider the issue of building density on the Plateau. To avoid the construction of buildings without an urban plan, studies by the German townplanning architect Jochem Jourdan, and by the Catalan town planning architect Ricardo Bofill were commissioned. The latter’s plan was, in fact, chosen for the Place de l’Europe, which now forms the European District South. In 1985, the Fund commissioned a third study for the development of the Kirchberg from a working party composed of the Luxembourg architects Christian Bauer, Isabelle Van Driessche and Félix Thyes. J. F. Kennedy incorporates lanes for both local and through traffic as well as provision for a tramway. © LCTO In 1952, Luxembourg became the headquarters of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC). Later, the governing bodies of the ECSC, the European Economic Community and Euratom, merged to form the European Commission which brought further institutions to Luxembourg. The Luxembourg state provided office space in the historic heart of the city and in the station district but the demand rapidly outstripped the available space. It was at this point that the destiny of the Kirchberg Plateau changed. The state acquired 365 hectares of the Plateau in 1961 and introduced a legal statute which created the Fund for the Urbanisation and Development of the Kirchberg Plateau, the public body charged with the urban development of the third and newest area of the capital. ale de Luxembourg" (now Luxexpo) and a residential district were built at the eastern end of the Plateau, while an Olympic-size swimming pool was built at the Plateau’s centre. The beginning of the 1990s saw the head offices of several banks being set up in Kirchberg. These were mainly German banks at first and they were built at the opposite end from the © LCTO The Kirchberg Plateau was originally an agricultural area. The “plateau” is formed by the deep encircling valleys which create this unique topography. This natural barrier separates it from the city centre which is only half a kilometre away, as the crow flies. Among other things, it is involved with the promotion of sports activities by granting assistance and benefits to all types of athletes and benefits, in return, from the reputation of the athletes concerned so as to to collect funds and means necessary for fulfilling its aim. The United Nations defines violence against women as any act that is physically, sexually or psychologically prejudicial, in the private sphere as well as in the public sphere. Women are affected by the armed conflicts around the great lakes in Africa in several ways. Rape, a real weapon of war whose victims are mainly women, is a disquieting scourge in the region because, unfortunately, no age is spared. Also, the victims are between 24 months and 80 years. The female victims of rape are left to fend for themselves, because they are excluded from the social, family and economic spheres. In addition to being victims, they are ostracised by society. This represents a double punishment. “Iwerliewen”, a Luxembourg NGO, in collaboration with its local partners in Africa, is leading a project to help these women once again become active participants in socio-economic life. The Foundation may, in a broad sense, provide institutions, associations, activities and individuals with a similar aim to its own with moral and material help. It can collaborate on a national basis with other agencies pursuing a similar goal. In this context it carries out all activities likely to contribute to or achieve or facilitate the fulfilment of its object. Currently, 450 women have been identified as beneficiaries of the project. The idea of the project is to provide them with the technical and financial means they lack, through micro-projects such as re-training with sewing workshops or crafts, vegetable crops, livestock… In summary, the final goal that we are trying to achieve is to promote the protection and safety of people who are vulnerable and/or exposed to violence and to promote the socio-economic reintegration of women and girls.
