HawkTalk Volume 92 : October 2016 Results for 15th October Men’s 1st XI Sunbury & Walton travelled to local rivals Surbiton with both teams having enjoyed a 100% record after their first 2 games in the 2016/17 league campaign. The visitors started at a high intensity and were quick to impose their attacking style against their visibly younger opposition. With some swift passing it wasn’t long before the Surbiton defence was carved open and it was only the final product from the forwards that kept the scores even. The Hawks team and their hoards of fans on the sideline didn’t have to wait much longer for the first goal, with Captain Shane Haughton finishing off a well worked passing display with a simple tap in. The Hawks continued to apply pressure and with the exception of a couple of loose balls and wayward passes giving Surbiton some cheaply won Penalty Corners, they were rarely troubled at the back and keeper Darryl Hannick sparked Well that’s better, a 67% win ratio, and into action when required. Minutes before the half time whistle, Sunbury & nearly a clean sweep for the Men’s sec- Walton were awarded a string of Penalty Corners of their own and Mark tion, only the Red Lions saving Wrighty’s Collins was able to extend their advantage with a nicely disguised drag flick wallet. Probably my favourite result was to the bottom left. The Hawks went into the break 2-0 up but you could the Ladies 4th XI, fighting back from 1-nil sense they were dissatisfied with their 35 minutes work and believed the down and digging deep to take all 3 advantage should be greater. The second half started with a similar tempo, points in front of a jubilant set of fans in the visitors looking to put the game to bed early. More penalty corners were awarded and chances missed but finally a deflected ball dropped into the evening sun of The Hawks Nest. the path of Eoin Haughton on the back post who finished into a near open net with a downward ‘Tennis Serve’ style swing. 3-0 up and The Hawks were looking confident and it was to be another Penalty Corner that would Adult Training enable them to put the final nail in the coffin, this time slipping the ball left Ladies Tuesday 8pm—10pm to injector Ross Gillanders who calmly swept the ball inside the near post. Men’s Thursday 8pm—10pm This week Sunbury & Walton will host Southampton whilst looking to maintain their 100% record. HawkTalk Ladies 1st XI Our match against Tulse Hill & Dulwich 2’s was difficult and unfortunately did not go our way. Although it felt that they were a similar standard, we weren't too successful at securing many attacking short corners and outcomes. During the first half, the defence held structure really well, with Shelly making an outstanding save on the line that left us all speechless. Nevertheless, by half time we were 1-0 down. The second half was equally frustrating and disappointing, with the opposition operating a high and tight press, which left us struggling to navigate the ball around the pitch. Although the final score was 5-0, the game was fairly evenly matched, with lots of promising play from the Hawks and some fantastic work by all the girls on the pitch. Men’s 5th XI Its a healthy start to season with plenty of players available making another interesting line up, with the benefit of Conrad and a guest appearance from Chris Harris (ex-captain) we found our feet by half time. With some energetic saves from Wade and off the line stick stops from JB. Momentum was with us in the second half with good pressure and short corners. Two well taken goals scored by Ian Smith was the difference and thoroughly deserved, everybody played their part! 2-0 Men’s 2nd XI The 2nd XI registered its win of the season with a much improved display of high octane hockey that local rivals Old Georgians could not match. First a quick history lesson. In the mid-1990s, Weybridge Hawks approached Walton Swans to merge clubs. This seemed like a good idea at the time but something was not quite right. On the eve of the new season, the majority of Weybridge Hawks players decided to up sticks and form a new club called Old Georgians. Walton Swans was left with some old memorabilia from Weybridge Hawks clubhouse and Conrad Ray. As a result, the rivalry with OGs in recent years has been intense, akin to the relationship that Celtic and Rangers currently enjoy or even Fenerbahce and Galatasaray. So on Saturday, OG’s experienced at first-hand the febrile atmosphere of extreme noise, strident bravado, resentfulness and not infrequent violence (namely Seb’s tackling) at the cathedral of dreams, St Paul’s School. Under the inspired captaincy of James Dowdeswell, Hawks quickly wrestled control of the game and went 2-0 up through goals by Damo Thompson and Jordan Thorne. A slight lapse in concentration allowed OGs back in the game and by half-time it was 2 goals apiece. The second-half proved to be the undoing of OGs as their growing fatigue and lack of discipline saw a number of short corners awarded against them and the flourishing of green and yellow cards. Dowdeswell’s pile-driver restored Hawks’ lead and a mazy run by quick-silver Nathan Reuben allowed Seb to hit the ball through the OG’s now porous defence to make it 4-2. Final thoughts: some post-match gripes by OGs on social media, which has been brought to the attention of the Surrey League, serves as a timely reminder not to act like Joey Barton and criticise match officials or opposing teams on Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn – remember, Hawks is bigger than that. One love. Peace.
