• Funded in 1920’s, but radio was officially set on
January 1 1941 and television was officially set on
1955
• Worlds major public broadcasting organization
• provides national and regional radio, television
networks (in English and French), and goes
internationally
SIGNIFICANCE
• To counter American influence and protect
Canadian culture
• Able to finally broadcast Canadian content to
Canadians and international countries

Creating the Untied Nations
International
April 1945
DESCRIPTION
• 50 countries, led by Britain, Soviet Union and the
United States of America, met in San Francisco to
create the Untied Nations (UN)
• 5 permanent members: China, France, USA,
Britain and Soviet Union
SIGNIFICANCE
• 1948, Canada gained its own seat on the UN
Security Council
• John Humphery, a Canadian, drafted the
Charted of the UN
• Mostly active in peace making

Soviet Spy Scandle
SEPTEMBER 1945
DESCRIPTION
• A Russian man showed up to the Ottawa news
room and said that he has proof of the wide
spreads Soviets spy ring operating in Canada
SIGNIFICANCE
• Shows that Canada can deal with problems on
their own
• Shows the public that the Canadian government
is able to take full control of concerning situations.
The Red Scare
SEPTEMBER 1945
DESCRIPTION
• Up rising of potential communists in Canada
SIGNIFICANCE
• the up rising was stopped and Canada stayed as
a democratic, free country

1947-1991
DESCRIPTION
• A war that is between the North American
Capitalists and the Soviet Union Communists.
• War was fought by using propaganda,
espionage, and economic and political pressure
to show the supremacy of America or Soviet
Union in the world
SIGNIFICANCE
• Canada worked under the United Nations frame
work to bring peace during many wars and
reduced the Cold War

Newfoundland Joins Canada

DESCRIPTION
• After the second world war Newfoundland did
not know if they should stay with Britain or join
Canada
• After serious meeting between Canada, Britain,
and Newfoundland, newfoundland agreed to
join Canada and adopt Canadian confereation
SIGNIFICANCE
• Canada has a strong and sustainable economy
• Gained another province to the country

DESCRIPTION
• Formed shortly after World War II to counter the
threat of Soviet Union of Western Europe
SIGNIFICANCE
• Canada held the chief military post 3 times:

DESCRIPTION
• War between North Korea (Soviet Union) and
South Korea (America) about the government
SIGNIFICANCE
• Showed that Canada supports the United
Nations and was willing to fight to support those
goals

• Egypt forcefully took control over the Canal and
demanded money
SIGNIFICANCE
• Pearson was the mediator
• Pearson’s solution allowed Britain, France and
Israel to withdraw their forces

• Won the prize for his work in Egpyt
SIGNIFICANCE
• Highlighted Canada’s role in the Suez Crisis, by
solving the crisis with a peaceful solution

DESCRIPTION
• Radar system were set up to detect Soviet planes
or missiles to have early warning of an attack
SIGNIFICANCE
• Canada was provided with three radar system to
have early warning of an attack
• Canada got protection from America against
possible Soviet Union missile attack
Quebec Quiet Revolutions
1960
DESCRIPTION
• A time of rapid change experienced in Quebec
during the 1960’s
• Quebec government won the elections in 1966
SIGNIFICANCE
• Quebec government made changes by adding
the Official Languages Act

DESCRIPTION
• Stationing of Soviet Union missiles in Cuba, which
causes a threat to USA and Canada, which could
have been a nuclear war
SIGNIFICANCE
• America created a blockade around Cuba,
which made Soviet Union to put out from Cuba
and thus protect North America From Soviet

DESCRIPTION
• Canada changed the flag
SIGNIFICANCE
• Shows that Canada wants to be independent

The White Paper
1969
DESCRIPTION
• Pierre Truedeu planned to abolish the reserve
system of the natives and in return they will be
given the right to vote, health care and
employment
• Natives apposed this idea and declared that the
White Paper will kill their culture
SIGNIFICANCE
• First Nations were able to save their culture and
land
• 2 organizations were created : National Indian
Brotherhood and Native Council of Canada
Ottawa Suspends Civil Rights/ October Crisis

DESCRIPTION
• A radical Quebec group raised the stakes of
separatism by kidnapping Pierre Laporte
SIGNIFICANCE
• Showed how far the Prime Minister will go to
protect the citizens of Canada

Residential Schools
1979
DESCRIPTION
• Aboriginal children forced to attend residential
schools to learn English and Christianity
• Children were sexual and physical abused at
school
SIGNIFICANCE
• A generation of culture was lost
• Children who were part of the residential schools
were diagnosed with PTSD

1982
DESCRIPTION
• Pierre Trudeau began the process of making the
Canadian Constitution (without British help)
• 4 people worked really hard on the Charter who
were: Jean Chretien, Roy Romanow, Roy
McMurtry, and Bill Davis
SIGNIFICANCE
• Made a huge impact globally
• properly shaped the Laws and which laws are
used in which level (federal, municipal and
provincial)

1984
DESCRIPTION
• To ensure that all Canadian citizens have equal
access to medical services
SIGNIFICANCE
• Get the same care if you are homeless or a
millionaire
• Citizens do not have to worry about the medical
bills

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC)
1989
DESCRIPTION
• Purpose: to have economic growth and
prosperity in the region
• Try to stop terrorism from destroying the land and
ruining the economic growth
SIGNIFICANCE
• Allowed trading and investment with Asia-Pacific
region

• Help discuss security issues that involve political
threat and economic growth
Somalia Affair
International
December 15, 1992 to April 1, 1996
DESCRIPTION
• A humanitarian mission became Canada’s worst
chapter in history
• Canadian forces were found guilty for torturing
and killing of Somalia civilians
• Canadian forces were facing a hard time during
the fight, due to less manpower and training
SIGNIFICANCE
• Canadian military was tarnished by the actions of
the military officials in Somalia
• Somalia mission was disbanded
• Changes were made in the military training
program for this kind of harsh situations
Kyle Brown
North American Free Trade Agreement
January 1, 1994
DESCRIPTION
• An agreement between America, Canada, and
Mexico for trading
SIGNIFICANCE
• Canada obtained secure and stable access to
the US market
• Improved Canada’s economy by increasing
trade with the US
• Canadian jobs were lost due to relocation to the
US and Mexico

Nunavut Created
1999
DESCRIPTION
• Government discussed about land claim and
proper governance options between Nunavut
and Northwest Territories
SIGNIFICANCE
• Nunavut finally got a say for voting on who they
want as their leader for the government
