Experience in Software Development
A software comprising a number of Computer Aided Lessons (CALS) on Pericyclic Reactions has been developed.
These lessons are a supplement to the book Electrocyclic Reactions – from Fundamentals to Research, which is
published by Wiley-VCH. The developed CALS are being used in the department as teaching aid which has greatly
facilitated the comprehension of the seemingly cumbersome subject of pericyclic reactions.
Computer Assisted Drug Designing (CADD)
Work has also been carried out in the direction of Computer Assisted Drug Designing (CADD) and a CADD lab has
been established. A number of software namely Molecular Operating Environment (MOE) VMD, Accelrys etc. are
being used for carrying out in silico design and synthesis of small drug like molecules of potential pharmacological
interest.
Medicinal Chemistry
Various facets of medicinal chemistry are being explored both in wet and dry labs by synthesizing
pharmacologically active compounds (solution and solid phase). Positional scanning protocol is used for the
identification of leads in different combinatorial libraries of small drug like molecules. These concepts are also used
in class room teaching by offering a course on medicinal to M.Phil/Ph.D. students.
Dissemination of Chemical Knowledge
National Level
Extensive efforts have been made to popularize chemistry by delivering lectures at different schools and colleges on
topics ranging from introducing chemistry as a fascinating science, building molecular models for facilitating
comprehension of difficult concepts, low cost activity and demonstration of difficult concepts on Overhead Projector
(OHP). The OHP demonstrations in the classroom, quite common in the western world, have not yet been practiced
in Pakistan. These activities have helped in developing scientific attitudes and logical thinking in students both at
undergraduate and postgraduate level. Efforts have been made to exploit Computer Assisted teaching by developing
computer aided lessons and their display in different workshops, science exhibitions and in different universities of
Pakistan and by writing chemistry books and reports on state of science education in Pakistan.
International level
As part of a six-member delegation of scientists, visited different German universities and research institutions with
a view to strengthen the existing, and establishing new linkages, in the field of Medicinal Chemistry, Bioinformatics
and Molecular Biology. The visit was jointly sponsored by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and the
Deutscher Forschungs Gemeinschaft (DFG). As a result thereof, MoU’s were signed with University of Hamburg,
University of Göttingen and Free University, Berlin to promote mutual collaboration with the scientists at both ends.
In continuation to these efforts, the visit of a German professor-a reputed Medicinal Chemist (Prof. Rademann from
Berlin) was organized under FFHP of HEC and a workshop in combinatorial chemistry was organized. This
workshop paved the way to the establishment of medicinal chemistry at QAU. Further, the visit of a well-known
organic chemist (Prof. Langer from University of Rostock) was organized and preliminary work was carried out for
establishing a Center for Synthetic and Medicinal Chemistry at QAU with support from DAAD and HEC. In this
connection a mega proposal has already been submitted to DAAD. The proposal is still in its infancy.
