K-5 @ Otis, Bay Farm & Nea These sessions are for students trying Mandarin for the first time, as well as those with some basic knowledge who are trying to develop conversational ability. The goal of Language Alive! is to help students develop a positive attitude toward communicating in Mandarin by involving them in fun and educational projects. The year is divided into 8 week sessions, with each session developing language within a theme. Within each theme, students will develop their ability to communicate through fun and active sports, science, engineering, and culture projects. Expectations will be different for students depending upon level and age. For more information go to www.langalive.com These classes will commence at 3.00pm (*Wednesdays start 2pm). The first 30 minutes will be snack and story time to enable the students time to travel to class. The main program starts at 3.30pm. *** These classes are open to all students who attend public school in Alameda. BEGINNER/ ADVANCED BEGINNER STRING ORCHESTRA GR. 1-5 @ Lum School This program is for any child who is currently taking string music lessons, even if they are only in their first year. This is an 13week beginner/advanced beginner orchestra experience that your young string player won’t want to miss! Taking lessons is important for technique development, but playing with others is where the joy of music really comes alive. We'll be performing kid-friendly music (different pieces each session) and will end with a concert. Donna Eyestone has been playing the violin since the first grade, and played throughout college in school orchestras. Donna knows what it feels like to practice alone, at home, and how much fun it can be to play music with others. Orchestra builds collaborative, cooperative, and problem-solving skills that can build positive, life-long habits. Donna is a community college instructor in multimedia and has won teaching awards for her engaging and easy-to-follow style that leads students to understanding not just "how to" but also "why". Please note: Students must have their own string instrument. PLEASE DO NOT ASK OFFICE STAFF ABOUT THE ENRICHMENT CLASSES! THANK YOU!!! The Language Alive curriculum is organized within themes so that the students learn and practice conversation using related language for approximately 8 weeks at a time. Past themes have included animals, bridges, sports, and financial literacy. Learning outcomes emerge from different collaborative projects with their peers such as constructing bridges and using Chinese phrases and vocabulary to explain them, or creating skits from both everyday and fantasy situations. For example, the students enjoy acting out practical situations such as shopping for groceries as well as over-the-top superhero dramas, or skits that address fairness issues they often experience at school or with siblings. Each day includes a myriad of games and activities that “teach” the target language for the day through multiple avenues that give all kinds of learners a chance to succeed. The end result is that they enjoy learning Mandarin at Language Alive! Tap shoes are required BEGINNER VIOLIN CLASS GR. 1-5 @ Lum School This is a 13-week session designed for children in 1st through 5th grade who have never played the violin before. You'll learn about the musical alphabet, basic rhythm patterns, the proper way to stand and hold the violin, and best of all play some tunes on the violin! Meant for absolute beginners - by the end of this 13-week session, you'll have a good sense of if you want to take private lessons, or in some cases, even join in the AEF String Orchestra next session. Donna Eyestone has been playing the violin "on and off" since the first grade, and played throughout college in school orchestras. Violin can be a life-long journey and playing music is a way to discover lots of new interests. Her early years of violin playing consisted of evenings playing lots of folk tunes - it is a great stress reliever! But the most important skill she learned from playing the violin is the power of practicing - and that when you stick with something you get great results - whether in music or any other area. Donna teaches with positive encouragement, is very approachable, and quickly gets kids playing songs and not just scales. Please note: Students must have their own violin . SWING KIDS” DANCE PROGRAM Gr. 1-8 @ Alameda High School Dance Studio (Saturdays) @ Ruby Bridges MPR (Wednesdays The class is an incredible mixture of Swing and Rock-n-Roll dance. Students combine acrobatics and choreography while learning to dance. Students will learn individual skills but will also learn to dance basic dance patterns with a partner.
