Overview
The WiTricity WiT-3300 Live Object Detection (LOD) sensor helps
ensure the safe operation of WiT-3300 electric vehicle (EV) charging
systems. Built as a perimeter sensor for the WiT-3300 source
resonator3, the device senses the presence of humans or animals that
intrude into a detection zone around the source, and enables the
automatic shutdown of the charging system.
LOD Technology
The patented WiT-3300 LOD sensor is implemented as a frame that
fits around a WiT-3300 source resonator enclosure. It utilizes
capacitive sensing technology and local signal processing and control
for real time live object proximity detection. By utilizing a proprietary
shielded sensor array that is unaffected by the energy transfer
system, WiTricity’s LOD system can detect live objects as small as a
human hand, foot or small animal as it intrudes into the detection
zone. Once an object is detected a signal is output to shut down the
power source. Note that the LOD sensor can be actively monitoring
the detection zone while the system is charging the vehicle, and when
the charging system is not operating.
Optimized for detection of live objects such as a human hand or foot,
WiTricity’s LOD sensor will be unaffected by dust or dirt that may
accumulate on the sensor and will minimize false alarms due to
detection of other low dielectric, non-metallic items made of wood,
plastic, or paper. Furthermore, the proprietary LOD detection and
signal processing algorithms compensate for drift in ambient humidity
and temperature that may confuse less sophisticated proximity
detectors that utilize capacitive sensing.

LOD System Specifications
Detection Volume: From LOD
sensor top surface to 15cm
above. Dependent on object type,
size and shape.
Detection Latency: < 2 seconds
Detection Capability: Live objects of
size equal to or larger than
human hand directly above
sensor frame. Dependent on
spatial position relative to LOD
sensor frame. (Note: detectability
will be improved close to LOD
sensor frame top surface and will
decrease with distance away)
LOD Interface Software
The LOD sensor is controlled either through the ASP menu of the
WiT-3300 or via a dedicated LOD interface application. The WiT-3300
ASP menu controls LOD through the CANbus interface and will allow
basic control functionality: enable / disable, system shutdown, and
sensitivity setting. Alternatively, LOD can be controlled directly via USB
and the interface application which will allow for real time signal
information in addition to all ASP functionality. This separate interface
application provides a real time numerical output level of the LOD
signal allowing users to establish system response baselines for
various objects and intelligently set detection threshold settings.

Implementing LOD
WiTricity offers a LOD Evaluation Kit, which includes a LOD sensor
frame designed to fit around the perimeter of a 50cm x 50cm FOD
enabled source resonator (resonator R2.3). A FOD enabled source
resonator is necessary for LOD implementation as it provides the
communication path to the R3 electronics or PC. Also available is a
LOD Design Documentation Package, which includes the electrical
and mechanical design data needed to reproduce the LOD 1.0
hardware and object code software. In addition, source code to the
signal processing, calibration, and real-time detection and
classification software is available to those organizations that execute
a WiTricity technology license.
