Functioning The control module and body are separate from one another. This enables temperatures of 200 °C / 392 °F or 260 °C / 500 °F (high temperature or T version) to be maintained over longer periods of time. The application head is heated with electric heater cartridges. The temperature is monitored continuously by temperature sensors and controlled by an electronic temperature controller located in the electrical cabinet of the application unit. The patented spray method (EP 34 S, EP 34 SD) mixes adhesive with spray air inside of the spray nozzle. Trigger the solenoid valve only when the application head is heated to operating temperature! When the adhesive is too cold, seals in the control module can be damaged. P/N 409090A EP 34 / EP 34 S / EP 34 SD Issued 05/98 E 1998 Nordson Corporation All rights reserved Electropneumatic Hot Melt Application Heads EP 34 / EP 34 S / EP 34 SD 7. Pneumatic Connection 9 The application head may only be connected to pressure–controlled and conditioned compressed air. NOTE: The control air must either be lubricated, or it may not be lubricated at all. Read the chapter Lubricating or Not Lubricating the Control Air carefully. The spray air may not be lubricated. Safe operation and lifetime of pneumatically driven application heads essentially depend on conditioning of the compressed air. Dust or condensation will increase the wear on sliding surfaces and sealing elements, thereby causing damage. To avoid these contrary influences, the control air for Nordson application heads must be conditioned by an air filter with air condensate bowls. The air conditioning unit cleans and dries the compressed air. Compressed Air Filter (Accessory) NOTE: The filter mesh size may not exceed 40 m. Nordson heated air assembly kits are used to condition spray air for spray air application heads and guns. They consist of a pressure control valve with filter, a solenoid valve and a fine metering valve. For additional information, refer to the manual Heated Air Assembly. Heated Air Assembly (Accessory) NOTE: The spray air should be heated with an air preheater (accessory). Connect the control air hose to the air connection (1). Connecting Compressed Air 1 NOTE: Ensure that control air is on at all times. Among other functions, it keeps the nozzle closed when EMERGENCY OFF occurs or when the system comes to a standstill. This prevents adhesive from dripping out of the nozzle. EPAH328S061A1297 Fig. 6 E 1998 Nordson Corporation All rights reserved EP 34 / EP 34 S / EP 34 SD Issued 05/98 P/N 409090A 10 Electropneumatic Hot Melt Application Heads EP 34 / EP 34 S / EP 34 SD 7. Pneumatic Connection (contd.) Connect the spray air hose to the air connection (1). Connecting Spray Air (EP 34 S and EP 34 SD) NOTE: The spray air may never be lubricated. 1 EPAH329S061A1297 Fig. 7 Lubricating or Not Lubricating the Control Air Hot melt application heads of the series EP 34 manufactured from 1997 on may be operated with lubricated as well as with non-lubricated control air. This has become possible due to modifications to the control module: S Control module cylinder with a special inner coating S Piston O-rings with an increased Shore hardness. NOTE: Lubricating the control air once means that the air must always be lubricated, because the lubricated control air washes out the factory-applied lubricant on the control modules and the solenoid valves. The new design control modules can be identified by an upper or lower indentation (see arrow, fig. 8). EPAH330S064A0997 Fig. 8 P/N 409090A EP 34 / EP 34 S / EP 34 SD Issued 05/98 E 1998 Nordson Corporation All rights reserved Electropneumatic Hot Melt Application Heads EP 34 / EP 34 S / EP 34 SD Operation with Non-Lubricated Control Air 11 If new design control modules / application heads are connected to a compressed air system which has previously been lubricated, simply stopping the air lubrication is not sufficient. The lubricant residue in the system would get into the control modules and the solenoid valves. It would thus wash out the factory-applied lubricant on these parts, greatly reducing the lifetime of the components. For operating with non-lubricated control air ensure that: S the unit is set to absolutely non-lubricated operation S no oil leaking from a defective compressor gets into the air system S control air is always supplied to the application head. It keeps the control modules closed when EMERGENCY OFF occurs or when the system comes to a standstill. This prevents adhesive from dripping out of the nozzle. NOTE: Nordson will assume no liability for damage resulting from unapproved air lubrication, not even for short periods of time. Operation with Lubricated Control Air The new design control modules or the application heads equipped with them can also be operated with lubricated air. NOTE: Lubricating the control air once means that the air must always be lubricated, because the lubricated control air washes out the factory-applied lubricant on the control modules and the solenoid valves. Use only this lubricant: Lubricant Klüber Unisilkon TK002/50 E 1998 Nordson Corporation All rights reserved EP 34 / EP 34 S / EP 34 SD Issued 05/98 P/N 316 578 P/N 409090A 12 Electropneumatic Hot Melt Application Heads EP 34 / EP 34 S / EP 34 SD 8. Installing Heated Hoses WARNING: Hot! Risk of burns. Wear heat-protective gloves. If there is cold hot melt material in the hose connection fitting (1) and/or hose connection (2), these components must be heated until the adhesive softens (approx. 80 _C/176 °F). Connecting 1 2 3 1. First connect the hose (3) electrically to the unit. 2. Heat application head and hose until the adhesive softens (approx. 80 _C/176 °F). 3. Screw the hose onto the unit. MXHH001S050B0997 Fig. 9 WARNING: System and hot melt material pressurized. Relieve pressure before disconnecting heated hoses. Failure to observe can result in serious burns. Disconnecting Relieving Pressure 1. Set motor speed(s) of the unit feeding the adhesive to 0 min-1; switch off motor(s). 2. Place a reservoir under the nozzle of the application head. 3. Activate the solenoid valve electrically or manually. Repeat this procedure until no more adhesive seeps out. 4. Re-use adhesive or dispose of properly according to local regulations. Second Open–jawed Wrench Using a second open-jawed wrench prevents the hose connection fitting on the unit from turning. Observe and follow the safety instructions in this document and all other related documentation. 1. Triggering Solenoid Valve Trigger the solenoid valve only when the application head is heated to operating temperature! If the adhesive is too cold, seals in the control module can be damaged. WARNING: Operate only with the voltage shown on the ID plate. 2. Setting Temperatures The procedure for setting the temperatures is described in the temperature controller manual. Temperature controllers are not part of the application head. They can be located e.g. in the electrical cabinet of a hot melt application unit or in a separate electrical cabinet. Maximum Operating Temperature 200 °C / 392 °F; 260 °C / 500 °F with the high temperature model. NOTE: The maximum operating temperature may not be exceeded. Nordson will assume no warranty or liability for damage resulting from incorrect temperature settings. 3. Adjusting Control Air Pressure The control air pressure for the control module is individually adjusted for each application with an external compressed air control valve. The compressed air control valve is not part of the application head. NOTE: Ensure that the application head is always provided with control air. The control air keeps the control modules closed when EMERGENCY OFF occurs or when the system comes to a standstill. This prevents adhesive from dripping out of the control modules. Maximum Control Air Pressure 6 bar / 0.6 MPa / 87 psi NOTE: The maximum control air pressure may not be exceeded. Nordson will assume no warranty or liability for damage caused by incorrect pressure settings. Settings are usually made with the pump speed dials. The optimum settings must be determined by trial and error. 4. Setting Adhesive Application Quantity The speed dials are located e.g. in the electrical cabinet of the adhesive applicator or in a separate electrical cabinet. Depending on the model of the hot melt adhesive application system, the pump speed control can also occur with a tachometer generator or an electronic pressure controller. All control modules are equipped with a stem stroke adjustment used for fine metering of the adhesive quantity. Stem Stroke Adjustment WARNING: Hazard! The stem stroke adjustment knob has no upper setting limit. If compressed air is connected, never completely turn up the adjustment knob / adjustment screw; it may jump out. Max. + 1.2 mm Max. + 0.047 in. 1 CAUTION: The stem stroke may only be adjusted when the application head is heated up! Failure to observe may cause damage to seals.
