Candidate 3 EV commentary

Baccalaureate Interdisciplinary Project
Science - Exemplar 6
Grade: C
“Integrating and implementing the physical laws of
projectiles into a computer game”
Science Exemplar 6 (C Grade)
Proposal
The aims of the project are clear and outlined succinctly.
It is clear why the candidate is planning to conduct this project but it would have
been beneficial to have had more detail about why this computer game could
become a valuable asset to the teaching of Higher Physics. This would have
strengthened the interdisciplinary aspect of this project.
He outlines the skills that he will develop throughout the research – again, a broader
project scope would have enabled these to be more substantial.
This proposal meets the C grade criteria. In order to meet the A grade criteria it
needed to have more challenging objectives – trialling his game with a Higher class
could have assisted him with this. It would have shown that he had considered how
the development of this game could have wide-reaching educational benefit.
Plan
The plan meets the C grade criteria. The project objectives are in line with the
proposal and the planning of activities is clear and specific. The candidate had
thought about the resources that were needed and how the research was to be
conducted.
This plan does not meet the A grade criteria primarily because the narrow scope of
the proposal makes it difficult to build in sufficient depth. The plan is mainly
focussed on the programming process and reduces the interdisciplinary aspects of
this project. This plan demonstrates the importance of a good proposal.
Presentation
The presentation checklist provides a useful way of assessing this aspect of the
project. This made it clear that the candidate had met the C grade criteria with
aspects of the A grade criteria being met.
Evaluation
The evaluation covers the key C grade criteria. He evaluated the project outcome
with regard to his original aims. He outlined strengths and weaknesses and showed
that he had reflected on how the project had progressed.
The evaluation was not particularly incisive and did not make enough use of the
evidence that he should have gained throughout the project. He chose a narrow
presentation audience and this limited the external value of his presentation.
Self-evaluation
The candidate had reflected upon the key skills development and could provide
evidence to support his generic and cognitive skills development. He had given
sufficient evidence to meet the C grade criteria but needed to reflect in more detail to
meet the A grade criteria. In particular, his consideration of feedback needed to be
more in depth and he needed to demonstrate a more in depth account of his
interpersonal skills. The candidate did not demonstrate sufficient independent
learning in the self-evaluation. It is to the candidate’s benefit to make the SelfEvaluation as full as possible – it would have been helpful in this case if the
candidate had been able to give evidence to cover each statement in the selfevaluation.
Summary
This project was hampered by a somewhat narrow scope at the proposal stage. By
broadening the range of research activities it could have helped with the further
development of interpersonal skills and independent learning. It would have enabled
the candidate to access a wider range of learning environments and deepened his
cognitive and generic skills development.
