Seniors Get Energized At Third
Annual NCC Harvest Ball
Seniors dressed in their finest were among the more than 100 New Community residents from
Newark, Orange and Jersey City who danced the afternoon away during the Third Annual
Harvest Ball Extravaganza.
!
Held at The Chandelier in Belleville, the afternoon featured a delicious lunch, live entertainment
by singer Linwood Peel, music by DJ Slim, comedy by G. L. Douglas and lots of prizes. Those
prizes included gifts bags filled with items like toiletries and gift cards donated by restaurants
like Red Lobster, Applebee’s, Checkers, Blimpies and McDonalds.
!
“It’s just gorgeous. We don’t get out that much. This gives you a chance to see some new faces,”
said Fannie Morgan, 77, of New Community Roseville Senior, who has attended every ball.
!
For Eldine Ragland of Manor Senior, this marked her first time attending.
!
“This is really nice. Everyone is comfortable and free and there is enough food and drink for
everybody,” said Ragland, 59.
!
“I had a stroke, but I still get out there and dance. It’s therapy for me,” added Barry Simpson, 58,
a resident of New Community Commons Senior who joined the participants in dances from the
Cupid Shuffle to the Twist.
!
The prize for the oldest man was won by Joseph Gyulay, 91, of Associates (microwave) and the
prize for the oldest woman (bed-in-a-bag) went to Jameelah Martin, 83, of Orange Senior.
!
The event was sponsored by the NCC Department of Health and Social Services, led by director,
Sharon Pleasant-Jones and her assistant, Malcolm Hayman. The Harvest Ball Committee was
comprised of employees Tahisha Chambers, Angeli Martinez and Jasminee Sawh-Ramroop.
Thank you to all NCC employees and those companies and individuals who made donations to
the event. A full list appears elsewhere in the E-Clarion.
