Hula Hoop and Scooter Fun Game Play
Get ready to scoot and roll. Kids love to wiggle and slide across the
floor. Play these games during weeks 2, 3 and 4 of your program.
GAME 1: Hoop Shuffle
Required Materials: hula hoops, small balls,
container
Place desired amount of hula hoops from one
end of room to the other for 2 teams. Divide
teams into two groups and give each team a ball.
Each player has to jump inside the hula hoop
while holding ball until they get to the finish line
and place it in container. Run back to team and
tag next person in line. First team that finishes is
the winner.
GAME 2: Scooter Hoop
Required Materials: 6 hula hoops, 2 scooters, 2
cones
Place 3 hula hoops in 2 lanes from one end of
room to the other. Divide players into 2 groups
and give each team 1 scooter. Each player has
to sit on scooter, pick up all hoops in their lane
until they reach finish line, circle back around
cone and place hoops back in lane until they
reach next player. 1st team to complete course
wins.
GAME 3: Hoop la-la
Required Materials: 6 hoops, beanbags, timer or
someone to count to 20
Place all 6 hula hoops on one side of the room.
Each player will have the opportunity to throw
the bean bag into all the hoops. If they miss
they can run and get beanbag to start all over.
However, they only have 20 seconds per hoop.
The player with the most goals wins.
GAME 4: Hula Hoop Tag
Required Materials: hula hoops
This game requires one fewer hula hoops than
players. If you have 20 players, you’ll need 19
hula hoops. Spread the hula hoops throughout
the gym. Leave plenty of space between the hula
hoops for more of a challenge. The one person
without a hula hoop stands in the middle of the
gym. She calls out “Switch.” All of the players
must run to a different hula hoop. They cannot
go back to the same hula hoop that they were
just in. The person in the middle who is “it”
tries to get inside one of the hula hoops, leaving
someone else without one. The person who ends
up without a hula hoop is in the middle for the
next round.\
GAME 5: Catch 20
Required Materials: beanbags, 6 hula hoops,
timer or someone to count to 20
Place 3 hula hoops on both sides of the room.
Divide players into two groups. One player from
each team stands in the first hoop. Each player
is handed a beanbag. At the whistle, each player
throws the beanbag back and forth across to the
other without pausing. The goal is to catch the
beanbag 20 times within 20 seconds per hoop.
At the blow of the whistle, move to the next hoop
and repeat. Play until everyone on both teams has
an opportunity to complete task. The team with
the most catches wins!

GAME 6: CREATE YOUR OWN Scooter Race
Required Materials: scooters
Gym scooters offer a different way to race in the
gym. The plastic or wooden squares have four
small wheels underneath. Students sit on the
squares and propel themselves across the gym
with their feet of arms. Line up the contestants
for each race on a particular line on the gym
floor. Tell the students how they must race on
the scooter. Examples include kneeling on the
scooter and using hands to move, only using
feet, only using hands or going backward on the
scooter. The first person to race to the opposite
end and back to the starting line wins that
round.
GAME 7: Scooter Basketball
Required Materials: scooters, foam basketballs
To play this version of basketball, divide players
into two teams, and divide each team into two
roles; shooters and scooters. The shooters
must stand behind the boundaries of the court
at all times, and the scooters must stay inside
the boundaries on their scooters. Place large
boxes in each of the free throw areas, one for
each team. Then let a large number of foam
basketballs free on the court. Scooters need to
gather the foam basketballs and hand them to
their shooters, who try to throw the balls into the
box. The team whose box has the most balls in
it at the end of the game wins.
GAME 8: Crab Racing
Required Materials: scooters
This version of a scooter relay race can leave two
teams of kids laughing and enjoying themselves.
Rather than letting players simply propel
themselves across the floor on their own, have
pairs of players sit back to back on their scooters
and link their elbows together across the floor,
either by scooting to the side like a crab, or by
one player scooting forward with the other one
trailing behind. When they reach the other side,
the next pair on their team gets a turn. The first
team to get all of its players to the finish line
wins.
